Sega Europe has announced that Anarchy Reigns is now available on the Playstation Network for download at a relatively cheap £19.99. PS3 fans can now digitally download the game starting today.

Anarchy Reigns is a massive online battle arena experience from the developer of Bayonetta and Vanquish, Platinum Games. It allows you to take control of several highly trained killers, including MadWorld’s Jack and Bayonetta’s titular protagonist, to fight either offline in campaign or online against 15 other players in free for all fights with environmental hazards.

The game has seen a decent commercial and critical response, mostly earning flak for the lack of variety in its cast of characters and the sparse nature of offline play. Also, the camera. That damn camera.

However, we reviewed Anarchy Reigns on the Playstation 3 and awarded it a solid 8 out of 10 for its “great art style and solid game mechanics”. Read all about it here.

In case 15 other people on the battlefield didn't bother you.

Anarchy Reigns from Platinum Games employs a multiplayer online battle arena style of third person combat where up to 16 players can hash it out. Of course, the biggest threats aren’t always other players, as the new “Action Trigger Events” trailer showcases.

Whether you’re in danger of being caught up in a carpet bombing, disemboweled by a giant blade, nuked by the submarine Red October or just the Kraken’s next meal, the Action Trigger Events keep things fast and frantic as players work to fight off their opponents and survive the environment simultaneously.

Anarchy Reigns, published by Sega, is available for Xbox 360 and PS3. Check out our review of the game here, and despite “the redundancy of playing both sides” and little replay value, the game is fun overall and should keep you occupied with its online component.

And not that it’s a major selling point but did we mention it features the leads of Bayonetta and MadWorld duking it out?

Now this is just getting ridiculous.

Admittedly, the UK is a football struck country but FIFA 13? On top again? Didn’t the game come out all the way back in September end, and dominated most weeks at the top of the sales charts? It’s been looking doubtful whether it would even be falling out of the top 5 any time soon.

While FIFA 13 stays in the number 1 position, other titles like Far Cry 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 still remain at numbers 2 and 3 respectively. This is followed by Hitman: Absolution and Need for Speed: Most Wanted in new chart data compiled by UKIE and GfK Chart-Track..

In fact the only real new entry this week – that too, all the way down at number 16 – is Platinum Games’ Anarchy Reigns. Mixed critical reaction might be a cause for that, but given Platinum Games’ way of staying niche, it’s not too surprising.

Let’s see if that changes with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

One of the first major games of 2013.

After quite a bit of a delay, Anarchy Reigns has finally been released in America. Japan saw the release of Anarchy Reigns in the middle of 2012, but for us, it’s now one of the first major titles of 2013. Platinum Games, the guys behind Bayonetta and Vanquished, continue with their own style of game play and art.

Anarchy Reigns breaks down the campaign mode into a Black and a White side. On the White side you play as Leo, your typical cyber cop. The Black side is played by Jack, a chainsaw yielding mercenary. Jack is a returning character for Platinum Games. Jack was the main character in Platinum Games’ unsuccessful Mad World, for the Wii. They admitted later that Mad World was not the right game for that console and it’s pretty cool of them to give Jack another chance in a world where he’s right at home.

The campaign starts out in the local place, where everyone’s path crosses and you have a choice to go White/Leo, or Black/Jack. From there, although all stages are the same, you get different missions, depending on your choice. Each stage has Main missions, and Free missions. The main missions progress the story, while the Free missions work on your score. The only way to get through a stage is to clear all the Main missions, and the only way to open the Main missions is by having a high enough score. The easiest way to score is by going through the Free missions, which are also unlocked by your score. You can skip the Free missions if you want and just stay in the open stage but it takes a heck of a lot longer to score, even if there are waves upon waves of thugs.

Even though the sides have different stories, they intertwine from time to time and still come to the same conclusion. Upon beating one side, you immediately get thrown right back into the first scene and the game picks the other side. So, even if you beat the White side, you still have to go through the Black side in order to complete the game. I also found that you can only play one side at a time. If you start the Black side you have to ride it out to the end. If you decide to switch, the only way to do so is by starting the game all over again.

Despite having a Black side and White side to play, there’s actually diversity within the fights. In a number of fights you get a choice between playing with your main character, or another character who’s joined you. With Leo, since he’s a team of three, you get more chances to play with or as his team mates, Sasha and Nikolai. With Jack, since he’s a one man show, you don’t have a team, but you get to also choose from time to time. With everyone’s control being the same, there’s really no difference in fighting and although the idea of playing other characters if a great feature, it doesn’t make a real difference.

The controls are a little complex, but completely manageable. Once you build up your Rampage Gauge you can trigger your Unleash Rampage. This allows you to blow through the small thugs with one hit and take down some beasts with a flurry of damage. The mechanics seemed pretty much on par with Batman, but the locking system seemed a little finicky. You can lock on to one person at a time, but they have to be in front of you. If you see an enemy and they go behind you, you can’t lock onto them until you see them, even if there is only one enemy. In a group you can easily end up attacking in one direction and your character can get carried away and end up fighting in one direction and missing the enemy as they are smart enough to circle you. With Batman’s attacking, the mechanics are set up in a way that Batman is always aware of everyone around him and can leap from one person to another to continuously attack. With Anarchy Reigns pitting you in the same mob attacks, it would have made sense to have this same sort of mechanic.

The art, much like most of Platinum Games, are over the top but with triple A quality. For some reason the main characters are 5 times larger than all thugs. Some characters like Oinkie are just plain annoying, while other characters are over the top Russian stereotypes. And then some characters like Big Bull, Max and Douglas were just bad ass.

In multiplayer online you can play with all of Anarchy Reigns’ characters as well as from some other Platinum Games. You can play with up to 16 people with Battle Royale, Death Match, Team Battle, Survival Co-Op and more. Mechanics stays the same in online, however you can level up online, unlike campaign. As usual Death Match comes down to who can hit their combo buttons first, but I had more fun with the Survival mode. I started with 2 other people online and when they left the game, AI was brought in to keep the fight fair.

Overall Anarchy Reigns is a fun game. The campaign is rather short, even if you play both sides and all Free missions. With the redundancy of playing both sides, there’s a good possibility that there’s not much replay value to the campaign. The online alleviates that issue, and should keep you busy for a while longer. The control combos aren’t as complicated as Street Fighter, but then the auto aiming isn’t as nice as Batman.

This game was reviewed on the PlayStation 3.

See the twins a.k.a. 'Romeo and Juliet' in action.

Sega and Platinum Games have released a brand new trailer for Anarchy Reigns. This new video, although short, shows a new character ‘Douglas’ in action. He is shown to be burly in form, more like a robot mech slashing his way forward using his massive arms.

He also shown to possess some cool wrestling moves, more like King from the Tekken franchise. To top that he also a special weapon called the The Twins a.k.a. Romeo and Juliet supported by this tag line: ‘Sometimes you gotta have a pair to move ahead in life‘. This ability helps Douglas to snap his enemies and deliver a finishing blow, something which will be useful when you face some of the strongers enemies in the game.

Anarchy Reigns is due this month for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game is published by Sega and developed by Platinum Games.

What do you guys think about this new character? Let us know in the comments section below.

Everything you want to know about the game.

Anarchy Reigns was announced on 27 January 2011 by Sega and Platinum Games. The game was originally delayed to July 2012 and was then pushed back to 2013.

It is a third-person multiplayer brawler developed by Platinum and the publisher, Sega, was quite delighted to get them to make the game. Platinum has also collaborated with them before on Bayonetta and Vanqish so it was familiar territory for them.

The game was originally scheduled to be released in Autumn 2011 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It came out in Japan on July 5, 2012 and a western release was planned too. Later this year they confirmed that the game would be releasing on January 8 in Europe and January 11 in the Europe.

It is being produced by Atsushi Inaba and directed by Masaki Yamanaka. There’s no Wii U version of the game planned yet. The game will be released on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

+ Quick Jump To

1. Development

2. Plot

3. Characters

4. Soundtrack

5. Marketing

Development

The game is created by the same people who worked on critically acclaimed games like Vanquish and Bayonetta, and considering it was released in Japan first and was met with some poor marketing, it didn’t do all that well commercially.

It uses an in-house engine and runs at 30 fps, which is a bit surprising, but considering it’s a brawler, the frame rate isn’t that detrimental considering it runs really smooth.

According to Atsushi Inaba, in an interview with GamingBolt, he said that “there are plenty of online games out there, but there is nothing like Anarchy Reigns, bringing together large numbers of players into melee combat. It is an incredibly difficult challenge, both from the game design and technology standpoints; however, developing a new online gaming genre is something we really wanted to do, especially with the glut of shooters you see in the online space.”

The design philosophy was simple because it was mostly a multiplayer melee game, and the mode is created to further flesh out the world in which the game takes place.

“The main focus of our game is multiplayer melee battles online. We’ve created a various of online modes, and the volume of content, as well as its variety, should satisfy everyone,” he said.

“Our single player mode exists to further flesh out the world in which Anarchy Reignstakes place, and it will also help you become familiar with the game itself. We aren’t going to say it has the same amount of focus as our expansive multiplayer elements, but it is something that we feel gamers will enjoy.”

He further explained that it isn’t a fighter as it is an online multiplayer brawler, and gave this analogy: “It isn’t a fighter as it is an online multiplayer brawler. If you think about a real life fight, the moves and possibilities of a huge brawl versus a one-on-one fight are completely different. We think that there are new kinds of fun to be had in that difference; we can keep what makes fighting games appealing and fun while bringing new experiences that simply aren’t available in modern fighting games.” [reference]

We don’t have much information about the netcode but the Japanese import version ran pretty well. The campaign is supposed to be 10 hours long according to the developers.

Plot

Anarchy reigns is mostly a multiplayer brawler, so there’s no plot here, however, the unique mix of characters can prove to be a bit interesting. The game pits players against each other in team co-op or last man standing battles.

Set in the post-apocalyptic future, this is an over-the-top close combat fighting game, set in a massively open and fantastical world. Pick from an imaginative mix of human and cyborg characters and set out on a multiplayer challenge where anarchy reigns.

There are some returning characters confirmed in the game from Madworld, which was a Wii project by Platinum Games.

Gameplay

Since it’s a brawler the game has a lot of mulitplayer modes from Battle Royale, Death Match, Survival Mode and a lot more. The modes are created to cater to different tastes and there are plenty of characters to choose from.

There are eight characters in total and most of them have their own unique style, weapon and signature kill move. Each character brings a unique style, weapon, signature kill move and feel to the campaign mode.

A.T.E. (Action Trigger Events) system triggers real-time events such as The Black Hole, a plane crash, blitz bombing etc to provide a constantly changing gameplay environment. No two matches will ever be the same. [reference]

Anarchy Reigns. But you already knew that, yes? The upcoming fighter from Platinum Games looks to combine a bevy of characters and the insane stylisms that Platinum Games is so well known for when it releases for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 next year in January. However, fans who want a little more bang for their buck can pre-order the game from Gamestop and expect plenty of goodies from Sega, including Bayonetta who brings her guns (all four of ’em) to the battlefield.

But that’s not all. Players will also receive two new multiplayer modes: Mad Survival mode and Dogfight. Mad Survival has a team of 3 players fighting against waves of enemies – except unlike other games, the enemies are the other playable characters. And they’ll need more than a sound beating to go down. Dogfight mode has players hanging from helicopters and pelting each with bullets until they fall. Because, well, why not?

Stay tuned for the North American release on January 8th 2013.
