After a strong success on the Xbox 360, PS3 and 3DS where it sold one million copies – to say nothing about the astronomical success on mobiles and tablets – the Angry Birds Trilogy is now set to release on August 13th for the Wii U and Wii.

Unlike the Xbox 360 which supports Kinect, the Wii U version will include support for online leaderboards along with touch-screen controls and off-screen play that allows you to continue playing even when away from the TV.

Published by Activision, the Trilogy includes Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio along with the requisite extra new content and features. So far, pricing hasn’t been announced although the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions donn’t exactly provide the biggest value for money at $30.

Rovio EVP of games Petri Järvilehto stated that. “It was certainly satisfying to see Angry Birds gameplay adapt so well to other platforms in 2012. the features specific to the Wii U are very intriguing to us, so we’re excited to release this version to fans.”

Compared to the monster success the mobile versions have achieved, this would seem rather sobering. However, when you consider that it includes Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio, with a couple of new levels, for $40 then it comes off as quite pricey and an example of uninformed consumerism.

For those who’ve yet to experience it, Angry Birds Trilogy collects the first three blockbuster classics of Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio to bring the series to Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 for the first time.

I won’t lie and say I’ve not been a fan back in the day when their first foray into mobile gaming began.. The gameplay was and still is satisfying and addictive with it’s simple “One-more-go” system where the player must break as much of the castle as possible.

The gameplay with the console release of Angry Birds is exactly the same down to the same levels and visuals albeit with a slight lick of HD paint. That’s not to say this is a bad thing as Angry Birds clearly has a successful formula when it comes to gameplay however translating this to a big screen sat in your front room or bedroom loses the core essence of what made Angry Birds successful. We play Angry Birds and most casual mobile games because we’re bored. They’re designed for convenience in mind so that we can play them in quick short bouts during travelling, waiting in a queue, sunbathing on holiday and so on. Sticking Angry Birds on a console defeats this purpose and puts it up against other console titles that are priced around the same with bigger production values and deeper gameplay experiences.

This leads me onto the biggest question I have with Angry Birds Trilogy; why? On the disc we get a collection of the “Classic” Angry Birds, “Rio” and “Seasons”. Each of these games are split into multiple episodes and further levels in those episodes.

The structure of the game remains exactly the same with the aim of racking up the most points possible by causing as much destruction with as few Birds. These points at the end of each level are converted into stars with a three start maximum. The more stars you collect the more levels and episodes you unlock it’s that simple. The controls work just as well as using a touch screen with the left analogue position the bird on the slingshot, the right stick controlling the camera and the triggers controlling the zoom on the level. It’s a simple control scheme that works. There are other little easter eggs thrown in such as hidden objects unlocking new levels and an extras option on the menu revealing more unlockables like concept artwork and “Bird Biographies”. Why you’d want to know what individual personalities and attributes the birds have is beyond me but it’s there if that’s what you’ve been pondering all these years.

The question however remains. Why would anyone pay £30 for a game which bundles together a package of mobile games that we can get for 69p each totting up to a total of £2.07? It doesn’t really make sense to me but undoubtedly some die-hard Angry Birds fans will lap it up.

The game has not been made available for the PS Vita which is a bit shocking but not suprising because of the low install base. Rovio’s next game will be released on September 27, and is called Bad Piggies.’

The prices wwere confirmed to USA Today as being $29.99 on the Nintendo 3DS, and a whopping $39.99 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. All three Angry Birds games on iOS are available for $6 dollars in total, that’s almost a 567% increase on the original price.

Whilst the Angry Birds Trilogy features platform-specific features like Kinect, Move and stereoscopic 3D, can this price be at all justified?

Angry Birds trilogy will be released on the PS3, Xbox 360 and 3DS sometime next year. The game supports Kinect and Move motion controllers and contains three games: Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio.

The Nintendo 3DS version is stated to be the first true Angry Birds handheld experience with the Vita version miraculously not announced.

In addition to normal gamepad controls, with Xbox 360 we support Kinect for easy family-friendly game play. We’re seeing that resonate strongly especially with the younger audience,” said Petri Järvilehto, Executive Vice President, Rovio Entertainment Ltd

“With PS3 you can play also with the Move controller. On Nintendo 3DS we’re supporting Stereoscopic 3D and Streetpass. We are working hard to ensure that no matter what platform you choose to play on, you will always get the best possible game play experience.”
