Ubisoft has announced that, despite it having decommissioned Anno 2070's servers, the game is getting an update soon that will allow for multiplayer.

Ubisoft has announced a new update for its city builder game Anno 2070. Dubbed Update 3.0, the update will be coming to Anno 2070 on September 7.

Update 3.0 for Anno 2070 will allow players to take part in Anno 2070‘s multiplayer. Ubisoft had announced back in July that several of its older games will be seeing their servers decommissioned, essentially disabling multiplayer for these games.

With the new update, Anno 2070 players will be able to do World Events and vote in the regular council elections. Players will also keep all of their progression.

On the multiplayer side of things, players will be able to partake in the co-op and PvP modes once the update is out.

Anno 2070 is only one of the games that saw their multiplayer servers decommissioned today. Other games in the list include the original releases for Assassin’s Creed 2, Driver San Francisco, Rayman Legends, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, and Silent Hunter 5, among many other games.

"Current owners of those games will still be able to access, play or redownload them," confirms the publisher in a recent statement.

Ubisoft, as it usually does, ruffled a few feathers when it announced that DLC and online features for certain titles would be decommissioned on September 1st. This included Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD, which would not only be delisted on Steam but also unplayable for current owners.

However, the publisher has reversed its decision on the latter. In a recent statement to IGN, it said, “As stated in our support article, only DLCs and online features will be affected by the upcoming decommissioning. Current owners of those games will still be able to access, play or redownload them. Our teams are working with our partners to update this information across all storefronts and are also assessing all available options for players who will be impacted when these games’ online services are decommissioned on September 1st, 2022.

“It has always been our intention to do everything in our power to allow those legacy titles to remain available in the best possible conditions for players, and this is what we are working towards.” Whether DLC remaining purchasable is part of that plan remains to be seen.

In the meantime, other titles that are being affected include Anno 2070, Assassin’s Creed 2, Assassin’s Creed 3 (though the remastered version is safe), and Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. Though it seems DLC that one paid for will remain accessible, multiplayer is still being disabled. So if you were a fan of the multiplayer in Far Cry 3 (the original 2012 release) or Ghost Recon Future Soldier on PS3 and Xbox 360, you’ll be out of luck.

Who knows? Perhaps this could also change down the line. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

Ubisoft recently announced that Anno 2070: Deep Ocean, an add-on to the original, will release on October 4th, 2012.

The game has seen quite a large degree of success, selling over 5 million copies worldwide on it’s first run, making it one of their best-selling franchises.

The press release details some of the new features in depth:

The focus of Anno 2070: Deep Ocean is a new faction called the Techs. Thanks to the new Genius population class, the Techs are able to expand further into the deep ocean. By experimenting with a new energy source called the geothermal power plant, the player will be able to build massive production facilities below the sea surface and might even secure one of mankind’s most important needs: Limitless energy supply. Energy transmitters will allow transporting energy between islands while the player can build the impressive new Tech Monument as well as new buildings and decorations to make cities even more beautiful.

Other new features include 150 new quests, natural disasters and co-op play.

If you were planning to buy Anno 2070, you should know that it is limited to only 3 activations and if you replace your, say, graphics card more than thrice, you can say goodbye to the game. Now, this is absurd and baffling to me that a publisher would implement such a thing.

What exactly is Ubisoft’s thought process behind such a strategy for the PC market?

Yes, I know they have been talking about how piracy is rampant, and how almost “95% of the PC gamers would pirate it” anyway, and other nonsense. This to me, shows an utter lack of respect for the PC market, and while plenty of publishers are affected by piracy, they have shown us that there is a way to succeed and gain a lot of goodwill in the process.

Yes, I’m talking about Valve. But that’s probably not a right example, because they are quite established and know the market inside out. Now, when Guru3D found out about Anno 2070’s DRM, Ubisoft’s response to that was… well, terrible.

They said: “Sorry to disappoint you – the game is indeed restricted to 3 hardware changes and there simply is no way to bypass that. We also do not have 7 copies of the game for you.”

Why does Ubisoft have a problem with this when the other publishers don’t? Simple. They think that DRM will actually help them reduce piracy (lol). Hey, never mind pissing off your legitimate customers, the most important thing is to reduce piracy! There are so many things wrong with this logic that I don’t understand where to even begin.

If legitimate customers buy the game, then Ubisoft may think their DRM is a success, and if they don’t? They will say that “Piracy is killing the market… boo hoo”. So what good can come out of this? Ubisoft will never find out the state of the market this way.

You do make some fine games, Ubisoft, there is no doubt about that, but tying them up with ‘draconian’ DRM will just hurt you in the long run. Check out the Anno 2070 gameplay trailer below, in case you’re hearing about it for the first time.

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

You can’t change the graphics card in your PC more than thrice or your favourite Ubisoft game may stop working – Anno 2070 in this specific case.

Ubisoft has been rejected by the PC community a lot, and the publisher hasn’t been that kind to the community either, whether it is blaming piracy or using some sort of DRM.

You will be locked out of the game if you change the GPU more than thrice. This was found by Guru3D, while testing various GPU for comparison. Ubisoft hasn’t responded, but why would they?

This is not the first time they are implementing a DRM like this.

Tell us what you think in the comments section below. Are you upset by Ubisoft’s DRM abuse?
