Now capture Pokemon with your smartwatch (but not really).

Niantic’s Pokemon Go is now available for the Apple Watch. Reports emerged over the weekend that the smartwatch version of the popular mobile title was cancelled but it’s now out and about.

There are several key differences between the iOS and Apple Watch versions. For instance, you can see how much further you need to walk to hatch eggs, the amount of XP needed to level up and any Pokemon that may be nearby. Don’t ditch your phone just yet because it’s still needed to actually catch the Pokemon.

Things that can be done on the Watch include collecting PokeStop items, watching eggs hatch and seeing far you’ve walked or how many calories have been burned. As a convenience tool, it’s not all that bad though we really need to question how addicted you are to Pokemon Go at this point to need it on your wrist.

What are your thoughts on the Apple Watch version? Let us know in the comments.

Hopefully soon, at any rate.

Pokemon GO, the most successful mobile game of all time, is still going to be supporting the Apple Watch, developers Niantic confirmed on Twitter. Apple Watch compatibility for the game was announced at a conference in September, but things have gone entirely quiet on that front since- this had started to lead to rumors that the Apple Watch app for the game was cancelled.

“Pokemon Go for Apple Watch is coming soon. Stay tuned,” Niantic posted on Twitter, possibly in response to all the news story about this percolating at the moment.

Pokemon GO currently does not support any smartwatch, although it does have its own smartwatch-esque accessory, Pokemon GO Plus. Pokemon GO Plus makes it so that the player does not have to have the app open on their phone at all times to know when there are Pokemon around to be captured- instead, the device will notify them when there are any Pokemon that spawn around the player and can be caught. The Apple Watch app will not replicate this functionality, but it should be more convenient than having the game open all the time anyway.

Possibly only the beginning.

While it may not be nearly as manically popular as at launch, The Pokémon Company and Niantic announced that Pokemon GO has managed to cross 500 million downloads worldwide since first releasing in July.

Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company, stated that, “The phenomenal success of Pokémon GO during the brand’s 20-year celebration is an incredible reminder of how many people around the world love Pokémon. The team at Niantic developed a unique experience that merges their expertise in cutting-edge location-based technologies with the beloved characters and classic gameplay of Pokémon. This ideal match of the right brand and the right technology has resonated with hundreds of millions of existing and new fans around the world.”

The next step for the game is integration with Apple Watch as Niantic unveiled details of the same during Apple’s reveal event for the iPhone 7. John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, said, “The globally loved Pokémon brand paired with Niantic’s platform and game design that encourages exploration, exercise and making real world social connections has inspired millions of people of all ages to go outdoors together.

“We are encouraged by the fast adoption of the game and are pleased to see so many people walk and play every day. Pokémon GO for Apple Watch will be another way people can incorporate the game into their daily lives, even more seamlessly.”

Frank Gibeau talks about certain Watch functions that could work with iPhone games.

Apple revealed its first smartwatch yesterday with the Apple Watch but revealed with the announcement of the iPhone 6 that it had several game publishers signing up to create mobile games. EA is one of them but according to mobile content executive Frank Gibeau, the team is currently working on prototypes for the Apple Watch as well.

Speaking to CNET, Gibeau stated that, “We have two teams prototyping wearable experiences that are not only standalone, but also some ideas where you can actually use the fitness component in the watch that can unlock capabilities in the game that might be on your iPhone.

“Or you could do crafting or some other auction trading on your watch that goes back into your tablet game that you might check out later when you get home. So, we’re pretty excited about it. We think it’s very early days. But for EA, the emergence of another gaming platform is compelling for us.”

Excited? Let us know in the comments.
