Ubisoft recently revealed a new installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, and they have also revealed that the Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation on the PS Vita has sold 600,000 units.

The publisher is happy with these figures and has said that with the right product there’s money to be made on the Vita.

Sony recently reduced the forecast of the Vita and that made many people believe they had given up on it, but considering almost 1 in 6 Vita owners bought Liberation, it suggests that the platform is still viable.

“We wouldn’t discount PS Vita,” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told investors. “If you have the right product at the right quality it could work.”

The game was released last year on the Vita and was met with good critical acclaim. Our review of the game also praised it and called it “an Assassin’s Creed game on the PS Vita, with production values you’ve never quite seen before on any handheld, and the overall experience can be fun if you don’t really take the game too seriously.”

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Is the female protagonist of the game potent enough?

Ubisoft Sofia is mostly known to be a second tier studio, so when the much hyped Vita game Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation was announced for development under the studio, there was a certain hype-killer going on in the air due to this fact. However, it’s one thing to judge a studio by their past work, and another to entirely dismiss them. I didn’t, even though I was a bit skeptical, and I am glad, because they churned out a good Vita game.

Not many games have female protagonists, and it’s something most publishers don’t attempt considering how male dominated this industry is; however, it’s also about how they present the female protagonist which most games fail to do well. There are only few notable female characters I really adore, and the one in Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation is one of the best ever in video games.

Aveline’s backstory isn’t fully fleshed out. In fact, they just show her childhood for a while and then before you get to know what’s actually going on, she’s an adult and punching guys in their faces. There are a few missions early on where you learn about her close ones, but none about how she actually became an assassin. This was the most bewildering part because most main line Assassin’s Creed games have had a story of how the main protagonist evolves and gets solid motivation to bring order to the land.

While the core mechanics are similar to the other games in the series, the studio has tried to utilize the Vita’s capabilities by using its functionalities, like the front and rear touch screen. They are mostly gimmicks and don’t offer anything positive to the experience, but there’s not a lot of ways you can use them in this game either. It was a struggle to control the camera early on and a bit disorienting too, but once you properly learn how to handle the entire thing, the gameplay is quite fluid.

One of my major gripes with the game was the slow frame rate. Now, I don’t know what frame rate this game runs on, but when you encounter sluggish screen response, you lose your immersion a bit. This doesn’t happen often though, but considering the game’s detailed and varied environments, it’s something that can be given a free pass. I won’t however, because I really despise sluggish input mechanics.

The weapon animations are spectacular, which was really a surprise, because I was expecting something quite limited and QTE based. The sword slash is one of my most favourite moves ever, and Aveline also has access to a tomahawk, with which she can hack people to bits- not literally, but yeah, you get the point.

There are sidequests which have some fun missions and the payout is good, but like all AC games they get repetitive and monotonous to the point where you just want to play the main missions and get the game over with. But that’s not bad, considering there are several different ways to tackle the missions. For example, Aveline can change into different dresses and you can expect different reactions from guards and other NPCs wherever she goes.

For instance, the slave costume helps her blend in with the crowd and the guards will turn a blind eye to her; the lady costume will help her move gracefully allowing her to bribe guards or charm random guys; and finally the Assassin costume unlocks her full move set but also makes the guards hostile.

You later unlock quick access locations which makes the whole thing a lot less cumbersome, just like all other games in the series. The story is somewhat memorable with Aveline learning a lot of conspiracies and trying her best to fight against them, but in the end, as I mentioned earlier, this game isn’t something which will explain all the events in detail and will end up making you confused if you try to decipher what it’s trying to say.

The bottomline is, it’s an Assassin’s Creed game on the PS Vita, with production values you’ve never quite seen before in any handheld, and the overall experience can be fun if you don’t really take the game too seriously.

This game was reviewed on the PS Vita.

Ubisoft assures fans.

Players- the few who have bought Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation- have been reporting that a huge bug in the handheld, PS Vita cousin of recently released Assassin’s Creed 3 is deleting save files entirely.

Ubisoft has been mum about this bug and about a potential fix up to this point, but they’ve finally come up with assurances for all potential and current owners of Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation.

“Our team is in the process of finalizing the first patch for Assassin’s Creed 3 Liberation,” reads Ubisoft’s statement (thanks Joystiq). “This will address the save game corruption issue that you asked about [previously]. We’ll have a better idea on the timing of the patch soon.”

Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation was released on the same day as Assassin’s Creed 3 itself about a month back, and unlike its console counterpart which received unanimous praise, it was met with mixed to positive response. Our review hasn’t gone up yet due to a typically busy season, but it will be going live soon, so stay tuned.

But it IS about gaming on the go.

Look, we understand that Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation is the most faithful and perhaps the best portable Assassin’s Creed experience till date (now whether it’s a good game or not depends). We understand that thanks to the spiffy Playstation Vita tech, you can take it anywhere and play it anywhere. However, sending this message that “What this train needs is an Assassin”?

Oh Sony, have you learned nothing from your wonky commercials?

Nonetheless, Aveline looks great here, and at the very least it gets the point across. You’ll be able to purchase a bundle with the Playstation Vita that contains Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation as well. Considering it’s exclusivity, releasing on the same day with Assassin’s Creed 3 and being a part of the biggest marketing campaign Ubisoft has ever organized, it’s fair to say this is a good strategy.

But seriously, assassins on trains, Sony? Sigh. Check out the not very offensive but still slightly uncomfortable commercial above.

Spoilers ahoy as details of AC3 and Liberation are revealed in the new Game Informer.

Hoo-boy. Just as the excitement for Assassin’s Creed 3 (and to a lesser extent, Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation 3 for the PS Vita) couldn’t be contained, NeoGAF has posted an incredibly large amount of details apparently from the newest issue of Game Informer. Check out some of the details below, and hit the jump for the full list:

(Spoiler Warning)

Assassin’s Creed 3:

– Connor lives near Daveport (New York), in a house owned by his mentor: Achilles.
– Achilles is an old killer arrived many before the new world that has been established as the Mentor of the brotherhood in the Colonial America.
– Secondary missions will be scattered for several territories.
– Each murderer who recruits Connor will have its own mission of initiation in the order, to complete this same characteristics of customization (weapons, appearance, etc) will be opened.
– After the Connor recruits to carry out certain missions or tasks, appear figures memorable / statues, in his lair.
– Weapons and equipment of Connor is kept on a fourth secret beneath the mansion of his mentor, a curious fact: this room is opened by pulling a lever in the form of candles.
– Also next to your home is a small port where it protects the Aquila.
– The naval aspect of Assassin completo Creed 3 is shaped by three branches with their own objectives. The first: are focused piracy missions, attacking other ships and gain new maritime zones as well as trade routes. The second: focuses on the history, more specifically in the famous Naval Officer (and Templar): Nicholas Biddle. The third: This point focuses on a secret treasure.

Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation

– The system of “person” will allow to select between one of three possible costumes from Aveline, which not only change the appearance of the protagonist, but that of her skill set.
– The assassin costume gives basic and an Assassin known features. “Lady Aveline” costume greatly reduces mobility but allows to seduce and bribe officials. Maid costume allows you to pass unnoticed in previously closed areas and is capable of inciting a rebellion among the citizens.
– Players can buy one of these different costumes in stores scattered throughout the map and opt for the benefits of each to complete their missions.
Each “person” gives a unique feature of their appearance.

Ubisoft's new story trailer sets the background for the assassinette's tale.

Everyone’s rise against injustice is unique and while Connor might be occupying the spotlight, Aveline de Grandpré, star of Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation for the Playstation Vita, has her own tale. And in between her various disguises and identities, Aveline has a purpose for fighting against the British at the end of the French and Indian War in New Orleans.

And trust us, as good as she may be with the hidden blade, Aveline wields the machete with equal aplomb in her role as a servant girl. Then again, her entire tale is a big gray area, not necessarily a product of Desmond’s memories but showcasing the little space in the war between the Assassins and Templars. Aveline is an assassin on one hand, but still trying to be a part of the society she was raised in (and for).

Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation is due for release on October 30th, alongside multiplatform blockbuster sequel Assassin’s Creed 3. Check out the story trailer and delve into the greater nuances of “placage”.

And if that isn't Ubisoft's description of striking fear into the heart of her enemies, nothing is.

Assassin’s Creed 3 is getting a fair bit of attention, but it’s offshoot, Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation is also quite interesting. Built from the ground up for the Playstation Vita, players will take control of an Assassin named Aveline, who’s got more sides to her than your average day Bruce Wayne.

In this behind-the-scenes developer diary, we get a look at how Aveline operates, inspiring fear wherever she goes. Naturally, her enemies are a cowardly and superstitious lot, so as long as they’re not touting guns or Bane, she should be fine.

When revealing Assassin’s Creed III Liberation for the PS Vita, Ubisoft were adamant in wanting to provide a full AC experience on the handheld, rather cutting anything out.

Recent gameplay footage since E3 has shown that they’ve been more than successful, giving us a different look and character with Aveline and her lifestyle.

As to the length and overall content of the game, producer Martin Capel stated that, “The scope of Liberation is similar in length to previous Assassin’s Creed console games, with between 15 hours of play for experienced gamers to 20 hours for typical players.

“Liberation has also been scaled for the Vita experience, having been designed to be enjoyed in shorter bursts. This is reflected in the mission design and checkpoints to ensure enjoyment with on-the-go gaming.”

If the pay-off is as good as other AC games, it’ll certainly be the definite portable AC game. AC3 Liberation will see release on the PS Vita on October 30th.

Finally, the Vita is starting to get games.

Ubisoft announced Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation for the PS Vita. Featuring a female assassin, along with unique touch screen controls, support for Near, and set in the time of the French Indian War. The game looks awesome, and will support cross play with Assassin’s Creed III on the PS3. To celebrate the occasion, Sony will be launching a PS Vita bundle with the first ever crystal white PS Vita, a copy of the game, and a 4GB Memory Card as well.

The game will come out October 30. It’s “built from the ground up to take advantage of the Vita’s capabilities and powers” and will feature full touch controls. A trailer is given above.

On the other hand, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified was also confirmed. No screenshots, videos, or any sorts of details were given, other than the fact that it’ll be “a fully functional shooter”.

As soon as we have more info on these games, we’ll put it up. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: Some details from the Game Informer article (via GAF) are given below-

-It’s out same day as Asassins Creed 3 (October 30)
-Lead female assassin named Aveline of mixed heritage (French/Black)
-Looks like the same time period as AC3
-Ubisoft Sofia is devolping it
-Takes place during 1765-1780 in the period between the end of the French and Indian war
-One of the bullet points is that it’s “true AC gameplay”
-Will not connect to Desmond
-Will have “multiplayer specifically tailored to the Vita experience”
-“The game has been released as a propaganda tool by Abstergo, who want players to experience a gray area of the Assassin/Templar conflict as an assassin rather than a Templar”
-Aveline’s mentor is an escaped slave named Agate, leader of the assassins in New Orleans
-Wildlife like alligators “wait on the banks of the swamp or hide beneath murky waters”
-Liberation will also take players across the Gulf into Mexico
-Game will take place in “large gameplay areas, you can run, climb, fight, and explore the entirety of New Orleans without loading a new area.”

ORIGINAL STORY FOLLOWS:

Now this is what we’re talking about.

Arguably the first major announcement for the PS Vita since after its launch, Game Informer today shed more light on the upcoming enigmatic Assassin’s Creed game for Sony’s beleaguered handheld: titled Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation, the game stars a female assassin, and the game being set in the period of the French and Indian war. Developed by Ubisoft Sofia, the game allegedly hits the PS Vita the same day as the final chapter in the main AC story arc concludes.

We don’t have official confirmation yet, but it’s only a matter of time. Get ready, folks! The PS Vita’s upswing begins here.
