The Assassin’s Creed Chronicles trilogy includes games set in India, China, and Russia. While all of them are separate stories, a distinct 2.5D perspective and stylistic aesthetic unifies them. The games were relatively well received by fans of the franchise at launch, and those interested in the franchise should give them a go if the chance arises- as it has now.

The latest entry in the long-running franchise, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, has been a smash hit for Ubisoft, who have provided oodles of post-launch content for the game since its release, and will continue to add to it in 2022. Ubisoft aims to go the live-service route with the next entry, currently called Infinity, which will supposedly have multiple settings and semi-open world levels.

Next month’s Xbox Games With Gold, a free smattering of Xbox One and Xbox 360 exclusives for Xbox Live Gold subscribers, has been announced and it’s quite the lineup.

Earthlock: Festival of Magic begins the month, releasing on September 1st and being offered as a Games With Gold title at launch. It will also be available for PC on the same day while heading to PS4 and Wii U later. However, this is a good opportunity for Xbox One players to obtain it free of cost at launch. Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China will also be free from September 16th to October 15th.

As for Xbox 360 players, there will be Forza Horizon from September 1st to 15th and Mirror’s Edge from September 16th to September 30th. Both are fairly solid releases and thanks to backwards compatibility, Xbox One gamers will also get these for free.

You might remember how some time ago, Ubisoft announced a series of sidescrolling Assassin’s Creed spin off games- these games would take us to settings that the games have not yet gone to, including China and Russia and India. The first game in the series, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, launched earlier this year to middling reviews, and things have been silent since, leading many to wonder if Ubisoft may not have silently dropped the idea entirely.

Don’t worry, the other two games are still coming- Ubisoft confirmed today that Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India and Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia will both be launching in early 2016.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India throws players into the tension between the Sikh Empire and the private armies of the British-owned East India Company in 1841. When a Master Templar arrives with a mysterious item that used to belong to the Assassin Order, Arbaaz Mir must discover why the Templar has come, steal back the item and protect his friends and his lover.

The final episode, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia, takes place in 1918 when Assassin Nikolaï Orelov must complete one last mission for the Assassin Order before he can leave with his family. His mission: infiltrate the house where the Tsar’s family is being held by the Bolsheviks and steal an artifact that has been fought over by Assassins and Templars for centuries. While too late to save the Tsar’s entire family, he manages to save the princess, Anastasia, whom he must protect as he escapes the Templars with her and the artifact in tow.

You know how I used to like Assassin’s Creed a lot? It’s becoming really hard to do it anymore. An annual series is still fine, but this year, Ubisoft have gone overboard, with four Assassin’s Creed releases so far (Unity, Rogue, and two separate mobile titles); then, a little while ago, they went ahead and announced another one, a sidescrolling spin off of the main series titled Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, developed by UK studio Climax Studios and features Chinese Assassin Shao Jun.

If you thought that was too much Assassin’s Creed, Ubisoft isn’t even done yet. It has more ‘Chronicles’ side scrolling games planned.

“We really liked the side-scrolling idea, like Mark of the Ninja, and we thought it would be a really great way to explore some of the other universes we’ve created,” Assassin’s Creed Unity creative director Alex Amancio told Eurogamer.

“One thing that’s really cool is that every one of the chapters of this game will be in the art style representative of that era in time. This is why Shao Jun’s game is like Chinese ink – very black and red.

“Once we have other characters and timeframes the art style will completely change to match that specific character.”

I guess I appreciate it in that this will allow them to explore settings they otherwise wouldn’t in the main series (China, Feudal Japan, ancient Egypt, and so on), but still. Ubisoft- stop.

Like with pretty much every single other game these days, Assassin’s Creed: Unity will be getting DLC (I mean, of course it will, it’s an Ubisoft game). And like every other game these days that gets DLC, it will also get a Season Pass.

But this time around, the Season Pass actually seems like a pretty good deal instead of being a ripoff like so many Season Passes usually are. The Season Pass will further flesh out the story of Assassin’s Creed Unity, and among the many things that it brings in, some episodes include Assassin’s Creed Unity: Dead Kings, which sees Arno’s story in Basilica, but even more awesomely, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, a side scrolling 2.5D action game set in China, that marks the series’ first official entry into China. It will be set in the Middle Kingdom in China, and will be starring a female assassin, and it will only be playable if you buy the Season Pass.
