The movie adaptation will be a little late.

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed film has received a new trailer featuring Callum Lynch (played by Michael Fassbender) participating in all manner of violence. This includes the present day wherein he’s captured by Abstergo and in the past as his ancestor during the Spanish Inquisition. Plenty of neck-stabbing, hidden blade action and Jeremy Irons appearing menacing can be seen.

Perhaps the more interesting thing to note is that the film will no longer be releasing on December 21st 2016. Instead, it will be out on January 1st 2017. We’re not sure what the reason for the delay is. Maybe Ubisoft wants to avoid conflict with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story which releases on December 16th?

Regardless, it seem that 2016 actually will be a year without a new Assassin’s Creed, unless that VR Experience is suddenly fast-tracked. What are your thoughts on the latest trailer for the film and its subsequent delay? Let us know in the comments below.

Assassin's Creed apparently "will be that one" according to Ubisoft's Azaizi Aymar.

Ubisoft’s upcoming film adaptation of Assassin’s Creed is in an interesting position. It features a strong cast with the likes of Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard plus the studio itself is working to ensure that it lives up to the legacy of the video games. In fact, brand head of content Azaizi Aymar is confident that the Assassin’s Creed film could break the streak of terrible video game based films.

Responding on Twitter to the statement that “movies based on video games have and never will work,” Aymar believes it’s very much like comic book movies. “Nope we can’t. There is always a first, like comic book adaptation. Assassin’s Creed will be that one, mark my words pal!”

It’s not the worst analogy. Once upon a time we were lamenting superhero films like Steel, Batman & Robin, Catwoman and Spiderman. Lo and behold, there are more superhero films than ever and a good number of them are quite entertaining.

Can Assassin’s Creed have the same kind of impact on films? We’ll find out once it releases in December.

Fassbender does note that there are "certain things" from the game to be respected.

For all the criticism against the song choice in the trailer, the trailer for Ubisoft’s film adaptation of Assassin’s Creed looks pretty cool. How much of it is set in the present as compared to the past though?

According to executive producer Pat Crowley in conversation with IGN, 65 percent of the film is set in the present day while 35 percent is set in the past. The “past” in the film will be 15th century Spain also known as the Spanish Inquisition. It should be interesting change especially since Assassin’s Creed titles are mostly set in the past.

Lead actor Michael Fassbender also noted that, “There are certain things that we absolutely want to respect in the game. But we also want to bring new elements to the game […] This isn’t a video game that we’re making. We’re trying to make a cinematic experience, so there are new things that we have to introduce.”

The Assassin’s Creed film is out in December. What are your thoughts on it primarily being composed of events in the present day? Let us know in the comments.

Fortunately the movie looks fairly well made.

The film adaptation of Assassin’s Creed has finally received its first trailer, showcasing Michael Fassbender as the 15th century Spanish assassin Aguilar and his descendant Callum Lynch.

The trailer showcases several signature aspects of the video games including the twin hidden blades, Animus, Abstergo and reliving the past to unearth some secret of some sort. Aside from the Kanye West song, the Spanish Inquisition scenes look pretty cool and seem to capture the feel of Assassin’s Creed admirably.

Then again, with the history that video game films have had – which hasn’t been helped by more contemporary adaptations like Need for Speed and Hitman: Agent 47 – Assassin’s Creed could end up falling flat when it releases on December 21st. We’re still hopeful though and honestly, nothing is going to beat the Prince of Persia film for “worst silver screen adaptation of a Ubisoft game ever”.

What are your thoughts on the trailer? Let us know in the comments.

Up and coming British theatre writer will be adapting Ubisoft's blockbuster franchise to the big screen.

Ubisoft and New Regency, who announce in October that they will be partnering on the silver screen adaptation of the former’s super successful video game franchise, Assassin’s Creed, have announced that they have hired a scriptwriter for the film which is tentatively planned for a 2014 release.

Up and coming talented British theatre writer Michael Lesslie has signed on to write the script for Assassin’s Creed, Hollywood Reporter reports.

Lesslie doesn’t have any silver screen scripts to his name, but he’s been known for great English plays. Hollywood Reporter mentions that Lesslie wrote the play, Prince of Denmark, which was performed at the National Theatre last year.

He has also worked on a number of short films.

Assassin’s Creed is being co-produced by Michael Fassbender, who will also star in the movie, and the film is supposed to be the start of an entire franchise. Considering Ubisoft haven’t hired a big name to pen the project and have gone with an actual talent, it looks like they might be really serious about this project.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Remember Elektra? Yeah, we thought you would.

It seems things are coming together fairly quickly for Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed film, to be based on the popular franchise of the same name (duh). Today, Ubisoft’s film and TV division, Ubisoft Motion Picture, announced the production company they’ve tied up with to handle the film. New Regency, which has produced classics like L.A. Confidential and duds like Elekta, will be taking up the task.

Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet decided on the company “because they are a talent- and filmmaker-driven company, with the same independent and creative mindset that we have at Ubisoft Motion Pictures.” Which is all well and good, but seriously guys, Elektra. There was nothing talent-driven or creative about that.

Development will now begin on a screenplay for the film, with Michael Fassbender of Hunger, Shame and X-Men: First Class fame playing the lead. He’s also attached as a producer to the project. So far the film could still go either way, but at least there are some mostly competent people behind it.
