The photos indicate that Microsoft worked with Asus for its handheld gaming system, and that it will include an Xbox Guide button.

While Microsoft’s attempts at creating a handheld Xbox has been something of an open secret for some time now, we now have our first look at Project Kennan – a collaboration between Microsoft and Asus for a handheld gaming system. The look, as caught by 91mobile (courtesy of VideoCardz), comes courtesy of leaked photos through the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the form of a pair of photos for a black model and a white one.

Speculation notes that the black model is more likely to be Project Kennan, while the white one will be a regular successor to the ROG Ally line-up.

Going by the photos, the handheld shares a striking resemblance with the other handheld gaming PC by Asus – the ROG Ally and its various versions. Of note is the fact that the buttons flanking the display share similar shapes and size to what we’ve seen from the ROG Ally before. Interestingly, there is an additional button to the left of the display close to the left analogue stick, which is likely the Xbox Guide button that we see on Xbox controllers.

The grips for the system are another place where we get to see a difference from the ROG Ally. Whereas Asus’ own console bears a form factor more typical of what you would see from a portable gaming system, Project Kennan from the photos seems to have a more ergonomic design, with grips shaped like they would be on a more standard controller. The ROG branding is also quite prominently present on both the white and the black systems.

More photographs, discovered by 91mobiles also reveal some of the hardware that will power both of the handhelds. The Black model will run off an 8-core AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip with a TDP of 36 W, and will feature LPDDR5-8533 memory. The white model, on the other hand, will run on the 4-core AMD Aerith Plus, with a TDP of 20 W.

Word about Microsoft prototyping a handheld Xbox has been going around since at least March 2024. The handheld system is described as being able to play games natively rather than making use of Xbox Cloud. More recent rumours from earlier this year indicate that we will be seeing an Xbox-branded handheld system hit store shelves later this year.

The rumour also indicated that the Xbox branding will go beyond just slapping a logo on the machine, and its design will instead make use of “Xbox design sensibilities,” which includes the addition of an Xbox guide button. Much like other gaming products by Microsoft, Project Kennan is also said to be running on a version of Windows modified to play games. This would also likely mean that we’ll see support for Game Pass on the system.

Along with this, rumorus also indicate that Microsoft might be preparing to launch a successor to its Xbox Series X/S consoles in 2027. While details haven’t yet been revealed, the company has reportedly greenlit the project, and R&D is likely well underway for the next generation console.

While a new promotional video teases the next Asus handheld gaming system, Xbox also might have had a hand in its design.

Asus has released a new promotional video that is seemingly teasing a new handheld gaming system. In the teaser, which you can check out below, a robot getting ready to have some upgrades installed.

Things seem to go wrong (or right), however, because an ROG controller along with an ROG Ally also fall into the upgrade booth along with the robot. While we don’t get a clear view of the result, since it is shrouded in quite a bit of fog, we are able to see a display flanked by asymmetrically-placed analogue sticks, as well as the ABXY face buttons shown on the display for a second.

While the video is quite obviously hinting towards a new iteration of the Asus ROG Ally, Microsoft also seems to have taken notice of the video. In a post on social media platform X, the official Xbox account responded to the video with the side-eye monkey meme. While nothing has been confirmed so far, it is likely that the new ROG Ally will also be running on Windows, and Microsoft may have even helped develop the system.

A report from back in March indicated that Microsoft has been working with another company for a third-party Xbox-based handheld gaming system. While neither Asus nor Microsoft have confirmed anything so far, the interaction X might indicate that the next ROG handheld system might be the first shot at an Xbox handheld that everyone has been waiting for.

According to the reports, the Xbox-based gaming system is being designed with “Xbox design sensibilities”. This also means the inclusion of a dedicated Xbox Guide button, as well as support for the Windows Store and Game Pass in some way.

Microsoft has not been shy about its aspirations to tap into the handheld gaming market following the success of products like the Linux-based Steam Deck and the Windows-based Asus ROG Ally. Back in January, Microsoft’s vice president of “Next Generation” Jason Ronald spoke about the company wanting to bridge the gap between Xbox and Windows for a handheld gaming system.

“I would say it’s bringing the best of Xbox and Windows together, because we have spent the last 20 years building a world-class operating system, but it’s really locked to the console,” Ronald said. “What we’re doing is we’re really focused on how do we bring those experiences for both players and developers to the broader Windows ecosystem.”

For Microsoft, this also means streamlining the experience by making Windows more intuitive to use on a handheld system. Ronald believes that this means designing the system to be closer to a console than a gaming PC.

“We’re focused on really simplifying that and making it much more like a console experience,” he explained. “Our goal is to put the player and their library at the center of the experience and not all the [Windows] work that you have to do today.”

As for Microsoft itself, the company is rumoured to be working on its own handheld gaming system internally. These rumours indicate that Microsoft is looking at 2027 as its launch window. What this means for the lifecycle of its Xbox Series X/S consoles, however, is currently unknown.

Details on the upcoming hardware upgrade for Asus' portable gaming PC have seemingly emerged.

How long it’ll be before we see a full-fledged successor to the Asus ROG Ally remains to be seen, though Asus is, nonetheless, set to release a more powerful variant of its portable gaming PC in the form of the ROG Ally X later this year. And though there’s plenty that we don’t yet know about in an official capacity, it seems details have emerged on its specs in a new leak.

A report published by VideoCardz claims that the ROG Ally X is going to be similar to the original model in several ways, with the same Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU with 8 Zen4 cores and 12 RDNA3 CUs, as well as the same 7-inch 1080p screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate. The areas where the device will see notable upgrades will be the batter, featuring an 80 Wh battery, doubling the original device’s capacity, as well as a significant jump forward with a 24 GB LPDDR5 RAM.

The new device allegedly also features a second USB-C port, will be about 70 grams heavier than the original model, and about 4.5 mm thicker.

What price the device will retail for or when these aforementioned details will be officially unveiled remains to be seen. Stay tuned for more details in the coming days.

The Asus India VP of consumer and gaming PCs has indicated that the company is already working on a successor to the ROG Ally.

Asus has indicated that it has plans for a successor to its ROG Ally handheld gaming PC. Speaking to Techlusive, Asus India VP of consumer and gaming PCs Arnold Su said that the company is planning a second-generation release of the ROG Ally later this year.

“We most likely will launch a second-generation [handheld gaming console] this year. We will still keep the Windows features, but we will focus more on gaming,” said Su.

Su also goes on to talk about the success of the ROG Ally in the Indian market, revealing that between 70,000 and 80,000 units of the handheld gaming PC were sold in the country. According to Su, the Indian market featured more early adopters for the ROG Ally than countries with more developed gaming PC markets.

The Asus ROG Ally was launched back in 2023 with a price tag of $699. Compared to other handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck, the ROG Ally features more powerful specs while also running on Windows 11, which also allows it to support services like Game Pass, as well as different launchers and anti-cheat systems.

For more details about the Asus ROG Ally, here’s everything you need to know about the original release.

Since Microsoft-owned games are published on PS5 and Nintendo Switch, everyone is part of the Xbox community according to Spencer.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has revealed in an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu that he believes PS5 and Nintendo Switch players to also be part of the Xbox family, alongside Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC players.

Spencer made the statement responding to a question about Microsoft’s vision after its successful acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Spencer also said that he considers Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally users to be part of the Xbox community as well.

According to Spencer, players on different platforms are considered part of the Xbox community owing to the fact that several games developed by Xbox-owned studios are available and played on the other platforms, including Redfall, Starfield, and more recently, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Spencer also said that the acquisition now allows Microsoft to publish more games than ever before on to more platforms.

Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard just last month, bringing in various franchises, including Diablo, Warcraft and Call of Duty, under the Xbox umbrella. Spencer has previously stated that, despite the acquisition, Call of Duty will not have any content exclusive to Xbox.

Both Activision Blizzard and Microsoft have also revealed that Call of Duty and Diablo won’t be coming to Game Pass before the end of the year.

The Lenovo Legion Go seems to be running off AMD's Ryzen Z1 Extreme CPUs, and will feature faster RAM than the Steam Deck.

Specifications for the rumoured handheld gaming PC by Lenovo, reportedly dubbed the Legion Go, seem to have been leaked. According to Windows Report, the Legion Go is slated to run on the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, and will be shown off to the public on September 1 during IFA.

According to a press release for the Lenovo Legion Go acquired by Windows Report, the handheld gaming PC will feature a high-resolution 2560 x 1600 display that measures in at 8.8 inches, and supports a refresh rate of up to 144Hz. Much like the Asus ROG Ally, the Lenovo Legion Go will also run on Windows 11, presumably with Lenovo’s own software on top to make navigating the OS without a mouse or keyboard possible.

Here are the complete specs:

The Lenovo Legion Go also seems to feature separate batteries for its controllers, which indicates that there might be a way to operate the Legion Go as a tablet without the controllers. The controller features a battery capacity of 900mah.

An accessory called Lenovo Legion E510 7.1 RGB Gaming In-Ear Headphones is also allegedly detailed in the aforementioned press release, as well as AR glasses in the form of Lenovo Legion Glasses. These will come with a micro OLED display, rendering at a 1080p resolution per eye, with high fidelity built-in speakers.

The report also goes on to claim that the Lenovo Go will launch in October for a price of $799. Its AR glasses, meanwhile, will allegedly be available for $499, while the earbuds will retail for $49.99.

While Lenovo is likely aiming to dethrone the Steam Deck as the handheld gaming PC of choice for many players, its use of Windows 11 might hamper these ambitions quite a bit, as the operating system lacks features that would be important for handheld gaming, like the ability to properly suspend programs.

The launch of the Asus ROG Ally might spur Microsoft into bringing features like Quick Resume to Windows 11.

During the launch event for the Asus ROG Ally, head of Xbox devices Roanne Sones spoke about bringing improvements to Windows 11 that would benefit handheld gaming, according to The Verge. This includes a feature that can already be used on Xbox Series X/S, as well as Asus ROG Ally competitor Steam Deck—Quick Resume.

“It’s been pushing us on the platform side of things,” Sones said. “You know, how do we think about the idea of you start on your PC, and then you just want to take [the ROG Ally] with you, and you want to pick up where you left off, and you want to be immediately ready to go.”

The lack of a Quick Resume feature has been one of the complaints in quite a few early reviews of the Asus ROG Ally, as a handheld can make good use of a feature that can allow players to quickly suspend a game and resume it later with the press of a single button.

While such a feature is currently not available in Windows 11, Microsoft has been reportedly experimenting with bringing such features to the operating system. Back in April, a video from a Microsoft hackathon that took place back in September 2022 revealed a developer presenting an idea for a gaming-centric interface for the operating system on Steam Deck.

While Microsoft itself hasn’t made any real announcements, the fact that it is pushing for Xbox Game Pass with the Asus ROG Ally quite heavily could be an indication that we might see a few updates made to Windows 11 to bring some handheld gaming features down the line.

Asus has confirmed the release date and pricing for its competitor to the Steam Deck, the Asus ROG Ally.

Asus has announced the pricing and launch date for its handheld PC competitor to the Steam Deck—the ROG Ally. Slated to hit store shelves on June 13, the Asus ROG Ally will be priced at $699. The handheld gaming PC is also slated to get lower-specced version some time in Q3 2023, which will be priced at $599.

While the $699 version of the Asus ROG Ally is slated to be the flagship model, featuring an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, 16GB of RAM, and storage of up to 512GB through a PCIe 4.0 SSD, the $599 model will feature the non-Extreme version of the AMD Ryzen Z1 processor. These prices across specs match up with rumours from back in April.

Asus first unveiled the ROG Ally in April, and was originally believed to be an elaborate April Fools’ prank. What sets the Asus ROG Ally apart from its primary competitor—the Steam Deck—is the fact that it runs Windows 11. This means that players won’t see many compatibility issues across different games, launchers, and even anti-cheat systems.

To make navigation across Windows 11 easier with a controller setup, the Asus ROG Ally features a special edition of Asus’ own Armoury Crate software, which allows for easier navigation of game libraries and provides easy access to various performance toggles and in-game monitoring software.

Another new leak has claimed that the upcoming ASUS ROG Ally will launch with two models that will be priced around the same range as the Steam Deck.

Earlier this month, Asus revealed a Steam Deck competitor in the form of its own handheld gaming PC with the Asus ROG Ally, and confirmed last week that the portable device would be out on May 11. Details on what the device’s price will be haven’t yet been officially unveiled, but according to a recent leak, it might not be too far off from what the Steam Deck currently costs.

As per known leaker SnoopyTech on Twitter, the Asus ROG Ally will launch with two models- one with an AMD Z1 Extreme chip and 512 GB of storage, which will cost $699.99, and one with a regular AMD Z1 chip and 256 GB of storage, which will cost $599.99. Both models will allegedly come with a 16 GB LPDDR5 RAM and an NVMe M.2 SSD.

That’s quite similar to the pricing that Valve currently offers with the Steam Deck, with a 512 GB model that is priced at $649.99, and a 256 GB model that is priced at $529.99. However, a 64GB eMMC model of the Steam Deck is also available at $399.99- it remains to be seen whether Asus has something similar planned for its device as well.

Either way, given that Asus ROG Rally is launching in under two weeks, it shouldn’t be long before details on this front get officially revealed.
