Kojima's epic open world title more than double's the revenue of Joss Whedon's flick.

In a new report by the Adobe Digital Index (via Venture Beat), it’s been revealed that Kojima Productions’ Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain generated $179 million in global sales on its launch day. In terms of entertainment launches, this is more than double that of Avengers: Age of Ultron which earned $84 million globally on its first day.

Adobe principal analyst and director Tamara Gaffney stated in the report that, “The gaming industry is a lot bigger than most marketers realize. These games get more social buzz on opening day than most movies do, and the revenue for one of the top games this year outdid the highest-grossing movie start [Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 with $91 million] by nearly double.”

It’s also worth noting that Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain’s budget was $80 million while Age of Ultron requires $250 million to make. In terms of net worth, the gaming industry is definitely excelling ahead of the movie industry.

What are your thoughts on the success of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain? Let us know in the comments.
