According to sources that spoke to Bloomberg, Atlus parent company Index Corporation is reportedly planning an auction for next week. It will be looking for buyers interested in picking up the organization, which includes film, anime and other companies along with the Persona developer, for roughly ¥15 billion (which is about $150 million/£98 million).

Index Corporation surprised the world recently when it announced that it would be filing for bankruptcy. That means that apart from the ¥15 billion, there is still about ¥24.5 billion ($245 million/£160 million) debt that is still to be cleared. As of now, Index is looking to finalize a deal by September.

Regardless, it doesn’t seem that Atlus will be going anywhere. Regardless of whether all of Index is purchased or not, there are plenty of studios which would be interested in picking up the relatively successful game studio. Stay tuned for more details, especially regarding future Atlus projects.

Kotaku received the confirmation earlier today from Atlus USA stating that they’re not in trouble even though the parent company in Japan is having issues.

Here is the official statement that Kotaku received from Atlus USA boss Naoto Hiraoka:

“Currently, Index Digital Media, Inc. and the ATLUS brand are unaffected by the Index Corporation proceedings in Japan. We’re carrying on day-to-day activities, business as usual. Shin Megami Tensei IV and Dragon’s Crown are still releasing on July 16 and August 6 respectively, and we’re licensing and publishing third-party titles such as R.I.P.D: The Game and Daylight. We want to thank all of our fans for their outpouring of support.”

Those who were worried about Dragon’s Crown not being released due to Atlus’s financial problems may now rejoice since the game is not affected by any of the financial problems. Check out our Dragon’s Crown preview and look forward to reading out review when the game releases on August 6th in USA.

The Aliens: Colonial Marines dev owes money to a lot of people.

Remember TimeGate Studios, the studio that Gearbox Software outsourced work for Aliens: Colonial Marines and hence got stuck up in the controversy for the same? Apparently the Section 8 developer has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Polygon also reported that the company owes cash to no more than 50 different creditors, including Epic Games, Agora and DJ2 Entertainment with liabilities ranging from $10 to $50 million.

But that’s not all. Southpeak Interactive is also in a legal battle with TimeGate over payments licensing issues that has been on-going since 2009. So chalk up another $7.35 million to Southpeak since TimeGate’s appeal was denied two weeks. If it couldn’t get any worse, the developer may also lose the Section 8 IP.

That’s also not including the class action lawsuit that Sega and Gearbox Software are a part of with Aliens: Colonial Marines. It’s definitely dark days for the FPS developer, and it’ll remain to be seen if it can escape unscathed.

The studio has gone ahead and officially filed for bankruptcy.

Local news group WPRI says an FBI investigation about the studio’s shady and controversial pubic funding is currently underway. 38 singed up for a deal a couple years back that enabled them for a tax-payer backed loan of $75 million.

After 38 Studios laid off several people from its team a few days back, Epic Games bought their second party Big Huge Games, known for their work on the excellent Rise of Nations RTS series and for working on KOA: Reckoning.

Looks like Amalur just didn’t generate enough revenue for them. I wonder what this means for their upcoming MMO Project Copernicus.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said that THQ doesn’t have long to live – as if we didn’t know, and he also criticised THQ’s strategy with licensed properties. THQ responded to this and Zelnick has also apologised, which you can check below.

“THQ’s strategy was licensed properties, first and foremost. License stuff from other people, whether it’s UFC or WWE or a motion picture property, and make a game around that,” he said

“And our approach, since we took over the company, is 100 percent owned intellectual property.” Zelnick said the problem with licensed properties is that it leaves publishers at the mercy of license holders.

“The most important difference is quality. Take-Two has the highest quality ratings among third-party publishers, according to Metacritic and most people in the industry. Quality really, really, really matters. THQ has had some good games, but their quality levels aren’t even remotely…the quality hasn’t measured up,” he added.

THQ responded to this statement by flatly denying it, and THQ vice president of corporate communications Angela Emery said that THQ’s condition is fine to GameInformer.

“Obviously, Mr. Zelnick’s perception of THQ is outdated and inaccurate. His comments are irresponsible and false. Perhaps he would be better off commenting on his own business.”

Zelnick has apologized and his comments really were in poor taste.

“While discussing our strategy I spoke out of turn about someone else’s. It was inappropriate and I regret it,” he said in a statement to GameInformer.

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
