Command & Conquer, Crysis, Battlefield 2 and many more to be affected.

After the shutdown of multiplayer service GameSpy, there was trepidation over which games would eventually continue receiving support for the same. Publisher EA, which has a number of online titles that were affected by the GameSpy closure, has now revealed a list of 50 games that will stop receiving online and multiplayer support from June 30th onwards.

These include a number of top-tier titles and their expansions such as Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2 for PC, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (PS2), Battlefield 2142 for PC and Mac, Battlefield Vietnam for PC, Bejeweled 2 (Wii), Bulletstorm (PS3), Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (PC/Mac), Command & Conquer: Generals (PC/Mac), Crysis 1 and 2 for PC, Crysis Wars and many more.

Some titles like Star Wars: Battlefront 2 will continue on thank to third party support but what about the rest? It’s still possible that some of these games could continue but certainly not all of them. Thoughts? Let us know in the comments.

Lars Gustavsson tells us why to not expect a 2142 follow-up any time soon.

DICE’s Lars Gustavsson recently spoke about the demands for a sequel to Battlefield 2142 and emphasized that the modern day setting wasn’t hampering the series, pointing to Battlefield 4 as an example.

Speaking to OXM, Gustavsson said, “It’s definitely a fact that sticking to any era from true life makes you have to look harder for more possibilities to bring in for cool gameplay, but I think for Battlefield 4 this definitely hasn’t been a limiting factor or a limitation. I think we’ve found a lot of new ideas and new ways of keeping customising and adding new toys to the battlefield.

“And to be honest, if we – and I’m not saying that we will, but for the future – if we did continue to go down the contemporary warfare route then yeah, I would seriously look into what we can do that seriously impacts your experience of Battlefield. Since, as you say – every era, as long as it’s [true to life], inhabits limitations.”

As for the creative freedom that a future setting allows, as evidenced by Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Gustavsson said, “Yeah, it gives them a lot of creative freedom. And I think that’s what people loved when we did Battlefield 2142 – when they got to unleash their creativity. ‘This seems cool: let’s do it!’

“At the same time I think that we’ve been really happy working with a contemporary setting, in being able to have a great foundation to build on and then just add a plethora of extra goodies to it. The contemporary [setting] with all the hi-tech stuff that’s already out there, to just keep on evolving it. I’d rather see it as a positive for the customer, that we can bring so much more to that setting, than a negative.”

Are you clamouring for a sequel to Battlefield 2142 or will Battlefield 4 satisfy your needs when it releases on October 29th in North America and November 1st in Europe? We’ll find out in the coming weeks.

In future DLC packs perhaps?

With the number of players in Battlefield 4’s multiplayer for next gen set to an awesome 64 players, could we be seeing a return for Titan, a game mode introduced in Battlefield 2142?

According to DICE’s Lars Gustavsson in a recent video interview at Gamescom, that could be the case. As of now, it’s on a list for ideas and since not all the DLC content has been finalized yet, it could appear as an additional mode there. “I love Titan mode and who knows in what form it might return in the future”.

For those unaware, Titan mode was a sort of Conquest mode in Battlefield 2142 in which both teams had huge, flying bases called Titans. Opposing team members must fire missiles at the enemy Titan, thus lowering it’s shields, before boarding it to take the whole thing down. Missiles could be fired from various control points across the map. The mode was criticized at the time for not supporting bots and being way too big for such a large number of people to take part in.

However, with large teams being commonplace now, it doesn’t seem like it will be a problem for Battlefield 4. It releases on October 29th in North America for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC with next gen releases due in November.
