Rockstar Games announced Thursday that it has officially filed a lawsuit against the BBC in an attempt to get it to scrap the planned biopic surrounding the creation of the company. The film is slated to star Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe in the lead role as Rockstar’s co-creator, Sam Houser.

The company released a statement to IGN that stated in no uncertain terms that they aren’t happy with the BBC going forward with this project over their objections. In part, the company said, “While holders of the trademarks referenced in the film title and its promotion, Rockstar Games has had no involvement with this project. Our goal is to ensure that our trademarks are not misused in the BBC’s pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events related to Rockstar Games. We have attempted multiple times to resolve this matter with the BBC without any meaningful resolution. It is our obligation to protect our intellectual property and unfortunately in this case litigation was necessary.”

For its part, the BBC isn’t commenting publicy because they don’t comment when it comes to pending legislation. The made for television project started shooting on April 20 and is slated for release later this year. While Grand Theft Auto is the company’s most famous project the firm has worked on a number of popular projects over the year. Most likely, the reason the BBC is focusing on GTA is because of the controversy that surrounded the game when it was first released. It’s unclear whether or not this lawsuit will be settled before the project is aired.

BBC’s iPlayer is already available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and Wii U, so it was conspicuous by its absence when Microsoft announced the full list of entertainment apps coming to Xbox One on launch day in the UK; however, the omission means nothing, as both Microsoft and BBC insist that the app will be coming to the platform in the future.

So reports Digital Spy. “BBC iPlayer is already available to audiences on over 1,000 devices and platforms in the UK,” a spokesperson said. “While we are working to bring BBC iPlayer to Xbox One in the future, we have no further details to share at this time.”

The omission caused some panic because there were some issues with trying to get the iPlayer on the Xbox 360 in the first place, owing to Microsoft’s desire to put it behind the Xbox Live paywall, and BBC’s desire to make the app free and public access.

However, Microsoft, too, insisted that the app would be appearing on the Xbox One in the future.

“We will continue to announce more partners coming to the platform and just like we did for Xbox 360, we will launch new entertainment apps every month,” they said in a press release.

Being dubbed a ‘killer app’ by Sony, it will provider consumers with live streams of BBC sporting events such as Formula One and Wimbledon, as well as 24 seperate live streams of Olympics coverage.

It plans to be an ‘easy-to-use’ service that offers programming ‘over and above’ what’s currently available on free-to-air channels.

Designed specifically for the ‘big-screen’, its purpose is to cater for sporting events with multiple activities, events or camera angles for an authentic front row experience.

During the Olympics, the BBC Sport app will provide over 2,500 hours of content, all in High Definition.

In addition to the Playstation 3, the BBC Sport app will also be making its way to 2011 & 2012 Internet Enabled BRAVIA televisions.

Edd Uzzell, Sony category development manager for BRAVIA, believes the launch of BBC Sport app is one of the most exciting developments for the Sony Entertainment Network.

“Televised sport is one of the biggest rating wins for broadcasters.  This truly is a killer app and will provide a substantial amount of additional sporting content that you can’t get through the current broadcasting model.  We strongly believe this will kick-start more widespread usage of the connected television offering, providing sport fans using the app with in-depth big-screen coverage of their favorite events.  The app will also have extensive penetration in the UK thanks to its availability on PlayStation 3” says Uzzell.

The app will launch some time before June 25.

In an interview with the Official Xbox Magazine, Thompson is quoted to have said: “I think the way we look at the services we have with our TV services, we’re very happy with what we’re doing with Sky.

“What we really want to do is ensure that we can differentiate and bring new things and that’s about really looking at the services we have and saying “how can we improve those and make those even more interactive and more differentiated?

“Now that we have Kinect coming to the platform as well I think that’s all we’re going to focus our energy on and that’s where we’re going to put all of our focus on in the next year.

“iPlayer is available on a lot of platforms, people connect to that content in a lot of ways today and it’s like ‘where would we add value to that particular property at this point?’ and we think we can probably add value in other areas at the moment.”

In case you remember, The Telegraph reported last year that a BBC-Microsoft deal had been in the works, but had run into trouble, since the two had allegedly been unable to come to an agreement about the pricing model. So apparently, the conflict still hasn’t been resolved.

Therefore, we can conclusively… yes, the BBC iPlayer is not coming to the Xbox 360. So stop asking.
