This rundown features 15 racers, and whilst they aren’t all without redeeming features they’re all tough to recommend.

Racing games are a wide-ranging genre – from super-fun arcade racers to realistic sims with eye-popping graphics. There truly is a racing game for everyone. On the flipside, there are racing games that aren’t for anyone. Tepid, stately experiences, underlined by shoddy graphics and muddling presentation.

Need for Speed Payback

Payback rectified the always online requirement of predecessor reboot Need for Speed but that’s about the only thing it got right. With its predictable story, dearth of police chases – and heavily scripted chases, if there were any – poor handling, unrealistic car damage, loot-box style microtransactions, plus a format which didn’t cohesively translate to open world, Need for Speed Payback is a low point in the otherwise esteemed racing series.

While the medium has no shortage of great games, there are also some that are just so bad that you wouldn't possibly have the courage or energy to finish them.

Game development is a pretty daunting task. It requires extensive labour and creative prowess over a long period of time. With the number of people in development teams ranging in the hundreds, it’s understandable that there are many moving parts to a game. If one breaks, it could derail the whole project. Sometimes, despite getting all things right on a technical level – things just don’t click. Either way, this results in a bad game, that most likely critics and gamers wouldn’t be willing to spend their time on. There has been no shortage of such games in the medium, and on that note – here are 15 such games that are so bad that you probably didn’t even care to finish them.

Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing

2003’s Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing is regarded as one of the worst games in the history of the medium, with good reason. The Stellar Stone developed title involves players making their way through the US in an effort to get cargo goods delivered within time. In actuality, however, playing it is an exercise in pain as you try to wrestle with the game’s multitude of bugs and other technical inefficiencies that will make you want to throw your controller in the air.

Sometimes you just look at a game and think- how did this get released? Why did the publishers releasing the game think it was in a state to launch? How did it get past quality assurance? These are the games that – especially in retrospect – we can’t help but feel were pretty much destined to fail- either critically, or commercially, or both. This is a feature about 15 such games.

RIDE TO HELL: RETRIBUTION

Ride to Hell: Retribution has received no small amount of criticism (to put it mildly), and yet it still doesn’t feel enough. Some games are simply offensively bad, and this is one such game. From crappy writing to repetitive gameplay, from terrible AI to a litany of bugs, ugly visuals to awkward controls, Ride to Hell: Retribution was a game that had critical problems in almost every single area.

What prompted some of these titles to release without being completed? Find out here.

Video games don’t always get happy endings. Sometimes, they don’t get any ending as their overall quality feels rushed in some places and incomplete in others. Granted, not every game had the resources or time to assure certain features, much less crucial story elements, were in place.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

When Hideo Kojima was rumoured to be leaving Konami, there was widespread controversy about the company’s treatment of him and the fate of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. At launch, The Phantom Pain was beloved by critics and generated massive amounts of sales. However, hardcore fans expressed their disdain over the ending and overall story. The biggest evidence of the game’s unfinished state, however, was the missing Chapter 3 and Mission 51. Though the game’s ending was in Mission 46, Mission 51 was included as special non-playable story content…in the collector’s edition. Konami clarified that the content was cancelled before being finished but the sequence of events and their impact on the overall lore left many fans angered. Unfortunately, the game didn’t receive any post-launch DLC either to help patch in the gaps.
