Just when you least expected it, these bosses emerged to challenge you.

It’s not enough for bosses to smack us around or toy with us throughout a story. No, some bosses must have a flair for the dramatic – a talent for emerging out of nowhere and taking us completely by surprise. Let’s take a look at 15 shocking boss reveals in video games.

Spoilers abound so be warned.

Queen Reyna – Gears 5

We knew going into Gears 5 that Kait would be trying to exorcise her inner Locust. What we didn’t know is that she would succeed and that Reyna, her mother, presumed dead at the end of Gears of War 4, would re-emerge. Sure enough, Queen Reyna took control of the Locust, raged against the COG and even took Del or JD away to cement her evilness.

Not every big bad has to be fought to close out the story.

There are secret bosses and then there are final bosses that truly mark the end of a video game. While the latter seems obvious enough, many video games actually take a few steps to hide boss battles behind different requirements. Whether it’s playing on a higher difficulty, gathering the right items or just not dying, here are 15 final bosses you could probably miss.

Victor Navarro – True Crime: New York City

Utilizing a Good Cop/Bad Cop system, True Crime: New York City had two key endings depending on the player’s performance. If you were a good cop, then the game saw Victor Navarro being arrested with millions of dollars at the Grand Central Station locker. However, Higgins re-emerges and the player must apprehend him to get a good ending. Pursue the bad cop route and not only will there be a proper boss fight with Navarro but our hero will meet Higgins, kill him and steal the cash offered before contemplating his dark path.
