Bramble: The Mountain King is an atmospheric indie game. Is it worth your time and money?

The indie scene is often filled to the brim with some of the most interesting and experimental games out there, and you can often find a wide variety of titles to suit just about any particular genre requirement you might have. We also often get games like Bramble: The Mountain King which, while not incredibly experimental, often aim to do a singular thing and do it well. With Bramble: The Mountain King, that one singular thing is to show off the atmospheric possibilities of using Nordic fables and folktales as your game’s narrative base.

Let’s back up a bit—Bramble: The Mountain King is an indie title developed by Dimfrost Games and published by Merge Games that tells the story of a young boy, Olle, and his adventurous sister Lillemor. Using classical Nordic tales as its base, Bramble: The Mountain King hopes to take us through an incredible audio-visual tour of classic folktales, both adorable, and often violent.

The game features a relatively simple story that feels like it was ripped right out of a classic book of fairy tales. Olle wakes up one night, frightened by nightmares, only to find his sister missing. Deciding to follow her trail into the forest, Olle eventually finds his sister, and the two set off for adventure, meeting magical creatures like the Frog King and gnomes along the way. Ultimately, Lillemor gets kidnapped by a troll, and Olle has to figure out how he can get his sister back. There’s nothing particularly complicated going on with the game’s story, with the highlight being the game’s general atmosphere throughout its environments.

"The game features a relatively simple story that feels like it was ripped right out of a classic book of fairy tales."

Despite the simplicity of its story, I’d argue that Bramble: The Mountain King suffers from some poor pacing, especially at the beginning. While it starts off in a fantastic way, building its thick atmosphere as you travel through a dark forest finding small people made out of acorns and sticks all over the place, there isn’t really much of a pay off before you find your sister. Once you find her, you’re going to be going through the rest of the game’s tutorials in a couple of bright and cheerful levels before quickly being thrown back into a dark world that’s seemingly out to get you at every corner.

The constant zigzagging doesn’t really make for a particularly engaging game. The title only really starts getting somewhat interesting once the plot finally kicks off after your sister is kidnapped, pitting you against some hyper-violent monsters in some gory levels.

Bramble: The Mountain King doesn’t really try to get too ambitious with its gameplay. It’s simple enough to play, with standard movement, the ability to sprint, crouch and jump, an interaction button, and a way to fight back against some of the more violent denizens of the forest. The gameplay never really gets too complicated. You’re often just simply platforming your way through the game’s various levels, avoiding deadly bear traps and other sharp objects along the way, and sometimes, you’ll be trying to find gnomes to help you open doors along your adventure.

"The gameplay never really gets too complicated."

The gnomes in particular seem quite influenced by mechanics from Nintendo’s Pikmin franchise, though it is worth noting that Bramble: The Mountain King never really gets too deep with its mechanics. You’re not going to have to figure out complicated ways to use different kinds of gnomes to approach a puzzle. Rather, you’ll need a set number of gnomes to open specific doors to continue, and it’s getting those gnomes that acts as the main puzzles of the game.

You’ll find gnomes in all kinds of situations through the game’s dark environments, and you’ll have to do different things to sway them to join your cause. The introductory sequence of Bramble: The Mountain King even gives you a short tutorial on how you’d go about recruiting gnomes and use them to open a massive door. Once the game’s main plot kicks off, gnomes are going to be in much more precarious positions, often needing your help to hopefully save their lives.

These small bouts of puzzle solving are often divided up with simple platforming segments that, while never really too difficult, give you a good chance to stop and experience the game’s gorgeous visuals. The other way your gnome-saving action is going to get interrupted is if you find yourself in one of the game’s many boss fights. An early one in particular is, once again, quite easy, but when it comes to sheer atmosphere and visuals, is an absolute treat.

As you might expect from a game that proudly touts that it features inspiration from Nordic folktales, Bramble: The Mountain King has a great variety of creatures that you’ll meet, befriend, and sometimes even fight. Creatures range from the troll that kicks off the plot by kidnapping your sister, to adorable little gnomes, and even King Frog, who saves your life in an early part of the game and considers you a true friend.

All of this is punctuated by gorgeous graphics that really bring the game’s various environments, from the forests, to bridges over cliffs, and even to the downright gory house full of animal carcasses, to life. Visually, Bramble: The Mountain King mixes photo-realism in its environments with a more cartoonish look to its various creatures, including protagonists Olle and Lillemor. This gives the game quite a unique look, making its various tableaus look like they’ve been ripped directly out of a musty old storybook.

"These small bouts of puzzle solving are often divided up with simple platforming segments"

On the audio side of things, however, Bramble: The Mountain King feels like a bit of a let down. While some of the more atmospheric sounds are fine, and the narrator does a great job of explaining what’s happening without giving too many details away, something about how some of the game’s creatures—and especially the gnomes—sound feels quite grating. Their child-like giggles and cries initially seem fine, but then you learn quite quickly that they’ll make these sounds constantly until you finally recruit them, and trust me when I say that this can get quite annoying, quite fast.

As an experience, Bramble: The Mountain King might not be everyone’s cup of tea. The game features gameplay that is overly simplistic, and none of the core game design really meshes with its overarching themes or atmosphere. The game is almost entirely reliant on its audio-visual presentation, with the gameplay just being a rather simple excuse to try and get you from scene to scene. What I’m trying to get at is that there’s surprisingly very little “game” in Bramble: The Mountain King.

However, if you can set aside your expectations of a “game”, you might find Bramble: The Mountain King to be quite charming. It isn’t a particularly long game, and while it has a number of gameplay mechanics, none of them get particularly deep. I don’t think I’ll ever find myself revisiting Bramble: The Mountain King years down the line, however, since there really isn’t all that much to revisit. The story is simple, and while the visuals and atmosphere are all great, there’s nothing in its gameplay that draws me in.

April is jam-packed with releases, from exciting indie titles and remasters to big-name sequels. Check out 15 of the biggest.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom finally received some extensive gameplay, and development has wrapped, which means it’s on track to launch in May. That’s roughly six weeks away, but the good news is that plenty of big games are launching in April to help pass the time. These include highly anticipated sequels, with at least one in development for nearly a decade, a new Bithell Games visual novel-style adventure, golf and various shades of cosmic horror. Let’s look at all 15 here.

Everspace 2

In early access since January 2021, Everspace 2 is finally getting its full release for PC. Taking an open-world space combat approach compared to the original, it sees protagonist Adam Roslin returning to explore Cluster 34. It can get pretty chaotic due to rival factions and gangs, and new high-risk, high-reward areas encourage more dangerous tasks for that sweet loot.

Everspace 2 was already pretty big when early access began, but it’s grown significantly with new ships, loot, systems, missions, activities and story missions. More enemies, bosses, equipment, customisation, and the final star system, Khione, are also coming. Story-focused players dabbling in the side quests will take roughly 30 hours, but if you explore everywhere, rack up reputation bonuses and do everything, that’s about 90 hours of gameplay to look forward to. With how well received the early access version has been, we can’t wait to see how the full release performs.

EA Sports PGA Tour

Suffering a slight delay for the sake of polish, EA Sports PGA Tour is out on April 7th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. Offering 30 courses and playable golfers like Im Sung-jae, Cameron Champ and Lexi Thompson, there are 20 shot types to master, backed by features like Pure Strike, with golf swings mirroring real life. Course Dynamics ensure various environmental factors influence ball behavior and that no two courses are the same.

This is all in addition to the Career Mode, where you create a character and work up to the pro level. Will it be enough to counter the addition of John Cena to rival PGA Tour 2K23? Time will tell, but as the first PGA Tour game from EA Sports since 2015, it has much to live up to.

Minecraft Legends

What if you took Minecraft’s crafting, world design and memorable mobs, fused them with action strategy gameplay and added a story about world-ending threats? That’s Minecraft Legends, developed by Mojang and Blackbird Interactive of Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak fame. As the hero, players explore the Overworld and rally other mobs like zombies, wolves, Creepers and whatnot to fight for them against the Nether’s piglins.

Along with running around and fighting, you can issue commands to your units to attack, build structures and much more. The aesthetic and unique mob designs will appeal to long-time fans, and there looks to be a strong amount of replay value thanks to co-op and competitive multiplayer. Minecraft Legends arrives on April 18th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and PC, and will also be playable on day one on Game Pass.

Dead Island 2

Dead Island 2 releases on April 21st for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and PC, something we wouldn’t have believed a year ago. Stuck in development hell for the better part of its lifespan, the first-person action RPG focuses on six Slayers struggling to survive and escape from post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. There are famous landmarks to visit and hordes of zombies to fight, but you can craft and modify weapons to gain an edge.

What sets the sequel apart is the lack of an open world, the new Skill Deck for customizing and swapping out different builds on the fly, and the new FLESH System. Now you can slaughter zombies in ways that look and feel natural, whether it’s breaking jaws or melting skin. Even with a 20-hour or so playtime, three-player co-op, collectibles, and side quests provide enough incentive to return.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

A lot has changed in the five years for Cal Kestis. Now a full-fledged Jedi Knight, he’s fighting against the Empire at every turn with little hope of winning. However, things are taking a turn as a mysterious new Jedi emerges, an Imperial Senator seeks a “dangerous deal,” and new allies emerge. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a bigger game than Fallen Order in almost every way.

New enemies are available, from Separatist Droids to massive creatures. Five Lightsaber Stances with new abilities and new Force Powers are also available. If you enjoyed the first game even a bit, then Star Wars Jedi: Survivor should be on your radar when it releases on April 28th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC.

Road 96: Mile 0

Some will probably remember Road 96 as a procedurally generated adventure game with alternating routes against the backdrop of unrest in Petria. Road 96: Mile 0 is a prequel that takes a more hand-crafted narrative approach, focusing on the relationship between Zoe and Kaito. Alternating back and forth between the two, players learn how they met, and their vastly different circumstances as Petria’s more harrowing side is revealed.

The biggest new feature is the musical segments, as we explore the inner worlds of both characters, dodging obstacles and traveling down a surreal path while making choices. Road 96: Mile 0 is out on April 4th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Sherlock Holmes The Awakened

A remake of Frogwares’ 2007 adventure game, Sherlock Holmes The Awakened sees the famed detective and his cohort John Watson versus the Cthulhu Mythos. While investigating mysterious disappearances, the duo will venture to locations like Switzerland, the wetlands of Louisiana and much more to discover the truth. The visuals and animations are vastly improved thanks to Unreal Engine, and there are new side missions, storyline content and much more to experience.

However, the most intriguing aspect will be how Sherlock’s sanity is affected by the events and the impact on investigations as the storyline proceeds. We’ll find out when Sherlock Holmes The Awakened arrives on April 11th for Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores

Like Horizon Zero Dawn and The Frozen Wilds, Forbidden West is getting a paid expansion with Burning Shores. It takes place in an archipelago formed in the ruins of Los Angeles, where volcanic eruptions and tremors are commonplace. Aloy must investigate a new threat, with trailers confirming an encounter with an awakened Metal Devil.

Almost no gameplay has been showcased for the $20 expansion, which is out exclusively for PS5 on April 19th (due to the PS4 being unable to handle it). However, Guerrilla Games has promised new stories, characters and Machines to fight along with “highly detailed” environments. You’ll need to finish the base game’s story first, so get that out of the way before jumping in.

Stray Blade

505 Games’ Stray Blade doesn’t have tons of hype behind it, which is crazy given how smooth the combat and art-style look. The action-adventure game is set in Acrea, the Lost Valley, and how you find it, die and are somehow resurrected. Now trapped, you must explore the region and overcome powerful enemies while learning more about its mysteries.

By honing skills, unlocking new talents and gaining abilities from the entities that ruled Acrea, players can expand their combat options. Of course, you’ll discover new weapons, materials and recipes while exploring, as your choices can affect the world. Stray Blade arrives on April 20th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC.

Bramble: The Mountain King

Inspired by Nordic folklore and fables, Bramble: The Mountain King is about Olle, who embarks on a quest to save his sister. The task is easier said than done as various entities roam the land, many hostile and larger than Olle. A special fragment called the Spark of Courage can help even the odds, but “courage without kindness” is implied to lead to a “dark path.” Bramble: The Mountain King is out on April 27th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection

Fans of the underrated Mega Man Battle Network series – the time has finally come, as it gets the Legacy Collection treatment. Releasing on April 14th for PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch, Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection consists of two volumes. The first contains Mega Man Battle Network 1, 2 and 3 (with Blue and White being separate versions). The second offers Mega Man Battle Network 4 Red Sun and Blue Moon, Mega Man Battle Network 5 Team Protoman and Team Colonel, and Mega Man Battle Network 6 Cybeast Gregar and Cybeast Falzar.

You can pick up both volumes as part of a package deal, but that’s not all. It also includes all 499 patch cards previously exclusive to Japan, 15 chips available from events, an art gallery with over 1000 items to view, 188 songs from the series to listen to in the music player, and even a 3D MegaMan for menu navigation. That’s not including online NetBattles and Trade, a High-Resolution Filter, and Buster Max Mode, which increases the power of Buster Shots.

The Last Case of Benedict Fox

If you’re interested in a different kind of Lovecraftian mystery, The Last Case of Benedict Fox may be worth checking out. The Metroidvania title sees detective Benedict Fox and his demon companion venturing into a mansion to investigate a couple’s murder and the fate of their missing child. Fox can venture into the minds of the deceased, exploring vivid areas formed by memories and emotions, to obtain testimonies.

However, the mansion also has its share of secrets to uncover. As you explore areas, there will be plenty of monsters, human and non-human, to fight with firearms, melee weapons and demonic powers. With a gorgeous art style and accompanying jazz score, The Last Case of Benedict Fox looks to be an intriguingly dark adventure. It’s out on April 27th for PC and Xbox Series X/S, along with Game Pass.

TRON: Identity

Bithell Games’ latest visual novel-style narrative adventure is set in the TRON universe, more specifically in a brand new Grid where a strange crime has occurred. Something has been taken, and as a detective program Query, it’s your job to find out who’s responsible. Speak to different programs to learn more about them, defrag Identity Discs to complete puzzles and learn the truth, and make decisions that could lead to various endings. Who you choose to doubt, trust or derezz is all up to you when TRON: Identity launches on April 11th for PC and Nintendo Switch.

Ghostwire: Tokyo (Xbox Series X/S)

Tango Gameworks has found success with Hi-Fi Rush on Xbox Series X/S, and on April 12th, it brings first-person action-adventure Ghostwire: Tokyo to the platform. Also available for Game Pass at launch, it’s set in Tokyo, which has undergone a supernatural transformation rendering most of its population into Spirits. As Akito, possessed by the spirit K.K., players must take down the hostile Visitors and stop the mysterious Hanya.

A new big update, The Spider’s Thread, is out on the same day for all platforms. It adds a new rogue-lite mode, tasking players with fighting through a 30-stage gauntlet. There are also new areas, quests and story scenes, along with new Visitors to battle and new skills, like dodging and Charged Strike.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak

As someone with a love-hate relationship with Monster Hunter, Sunbreak is essential for any fan of Monster Hunter Rise. It’s out on April 28th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5, and features tons of new content, as players venture to a new region and Elgado Outpost to investigate The Three Lords.

The expansion introduces Master Rank Quests, providing even tougher challenges and rewards like higher rarity armor and stronger skills. Along with brand new monsters like Malzeno, an Elder Dragon, there are returning monsters from previous games like Espinas, Seregios, Astalos, Gore Magala and Shagaru Magala. New Follower quests allow solo hunters to battle alongside NPCs and unlock some cool armor and weapons.

More than anything, the end-game is significantly expanded thanks to Anomaly Investigations. Add the extensive post-launch support, including the addition of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne’s Velkhana, and there’s more than enough to keep Xbox and PlayStation players happy (or raging) until the next Title Update.

Bramble: The Mountain King harkens back to the olden days of the adventure genre, but it's also doing its own thing in unique and interesting ways.

The games industry is going through an interesting shift as of late, and AA and indie games have started to rise in popularity once again thanks to the power of social media and development tools that enable small teams to create games that rival the very best of AAA experiences at a fraction of the cost and resources. We have had the chance to experience so many fantastic games of this ilk in the last few years, and there’s no shortage of similar experiences in the near future as well – and this feature series is dedicated to such games.

Today, we will be putting a spotlight on developer Dimfrost’s upcoming Bramble: The Mountain King, which looks like a throwback to the adventure games of the past. Of course, there’s a lot more to it as well, and it’s a combination of those factors that make Bramble: The Mountain King a game that’s worth keeping your eyes open for since it could easily be one of the dark horses of the near future.

Dimfrost is a small indie studio that started out in 2017, and now the studio has become a part of the Zordix conglomerate which also includes other AA developers like Reply Game Studios which recently released Soulstice to great critical acclaim. Dimfrost has previously worked on a VR game by the name of A Writer And His Daughter, which touches on the same themes of love and companionship that Bramble: The Mountain King seems to be trying to tackle as well. That said, it’s easily a much bigger project than what came before – and we can’t help but be excited about it.

Bramble: The Mountain King is set against the backdrop of a fantastical world that’s heavily inspired by the dark fables. You assume the role of Olle, a young and impressionable boy who embarks on a quest to save his sister. Considering the inspirations, it’s rather obvious that the game also features entities with dark powers that haunt these places, and Olle will obviously have to find a way to defeat these entities to save his sister from their clutches.

Sure, that might be a pretty simplistic setup when compared to contemporaries of the genre – but it’s a really good framework to put the spotlight on these seemingly lovable characters as they overcome insurmountable odds in these hostile lands. It’s possible that the narrative might dive deeper into the lore aspects and evolve into a story that’s much bigger than what we know at the moment. But either way, we are hoping Dimfrost will be able to tell a compelling story, one that puts the spotlight on these characters. If it manages to do just that, the story would end up being one that players will remember long after the credits roll.

Over on the gameplay front, Bramble: The Mountain King is presented through a fixed camera perspective that mostly functions at a bird-eye view angle. Olle must use his wits to explore the game’s fantastical world and try to overcome any obstacles that lie between him and his goal – and that can range from literal obstructions that need to be cleared out to enemies that require to be dodged or defeated to anything and everything in between these two extremes. In that regard, it’s like Little Nightmares since it also tries to mix adventure and horror with its brand of gameplay.

While there’s going to be the main path that will guide you towards your goal, Olle would also have the ability to veer away from that beaten path at times in search of additional rewards and secrets that will help you in better understanding this twisted world, its history, and the many legends about the beasts that inhabit these lands. The journey will also be punctuated by boss fights against gigantic creatures, and you will have to use your wits in these tense situations to get to the other side – and we can’t wait to see what the game has in store for the final release.

The levels themselves also have a great deal of variety amongst them, and there’s also the sheer sense of scale that you feel with you being just a tiny creature in a gargantuan land. One moment you’re crawling your way through tree roots, and the next you are trying to find your way through a dimly lit underground area by manipulating blocks and platforms to chart out a safe path. The level design seems to have a sense of flow to them, and while there are plenty of puzzles that will have to be solved to continue – they seem to be striking the perfect balance in terms of complexity and difficulty so as to not interrupt the rhythmic nature of the gameplay.

And we’d be remiss if we didn’t talk about the visuals. Suffice to say, Bramble: The Mountain King looks absolutely gorgeous in terms of visual fidelity – and a lot of that can be credited to the stunning art direction on display. Dimfrost paints a beautiful world that has a grand sense of scale, and everything from the distinct characters you will meet throughout your journey to the varied environments have tons of personality within them – and we can’t wait to explore them in all their glory. Of course, the fact that the developer is using Unreal Engine for this project also helps that case by a significant margin – and the game boasts high-quality textures, smooth animations along with plenty of post-processing effects that all culminate to give the game a clean and crisp look – which is obviously essential for a game like this that relies on the visuals to deliver a captivating experience.

Speaking about release dates, Dimfrost hasn’t provided a firm release date just yet. Bramble: The Mountain King has been in development for a couple of years now, and while the game was previously scheduled to be released in 2022 – it has now been pushed over to 2023. Considering the fact that we already have access to a free demo to try out the game, it seems fair to assume that the game will most likely be able to meet its updated release date with relative ease. As always, it’s advisable to let the development run its due course instead of hurrying to meet a release date for the best results.

In so many ways, Bramble: The Mountain King reminds of adventure games like ICO among others – primarily because it’s taking players through a wondrous ride through a fantastical world coupled with a simple but effective story and powerful storytelling. Dimfrost seems to have a great sense of how to craft experiences that have a sense of flow to them, and one that encourages its players to take the time to smell the roses, and these types of games seem to be becoming the next big thing – as evident by the popularity of the recently released Stray. Hopefully, Bramble: The Mountain King is able to live up to its potential.

All that said, here are 15 upcoming single-player games that you probably didn’t know about but certainly demand your attention.

Lost Soul Aside

Taking inspiration from the likes of action games, developer UtilZeroGames’ upcoming Lost Soul Aside is looking like a promising hack and slash game. Players take control of a warrior and a shapeshifting companion as they make their way through a world where technology and fantasy coalesce together in a beautiful way. The combat is fast and frenetic, and the visuals are absolutely stunning – which is why you should definitely keep an eye out for Lost Soul Aside when it releases in the near future.

Project: The Perceiver

One of the more recent announcements in the list, Project: The Perceiver can best be described as Ghost of Tsushima meets Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Set against the backdrop of ancient China, the game follows an artist who dies moments before completing his masterpiece – but is brought back to life by a mysterious force following which he embarks on a quest to save his land from intruders. The combat is stylish yet retains a methodical flair to it, and the open world looks gorgeous with stunning vistas and a grand sense of scale.

Project GRAY

Currently in development at In-D, Project Gray puts you in the shoes of a native who has gained some special abilities thanks to an advanced civilization that has landed on its shores. Now, it’s up to him to stand up to the aliens and drive them away from this planet. Project GRAY started life as a one-man project and it’s still some ways from release, but it looks gorgeous with some dynamic gameplay that revolves between traversal and combat flawlessly.

Mumbai Gullies

Mumbai Gullies is a story about the protagonist rising through the ranks of Mumbai’s underworld throughout different time periods. The game is open-world, so it seems fair to expect a number of surprises while exploring every nook and cranny of this faithfully recreated rendition of the Indian city of dreams. Mumbai Gullies has the potential to morph into a grand hit, and we really hope that it does exactly that.

Airtight City 2.0

Airtight City 2.0 sees players assuming the role of a soldier who is powered by millions of souls, and if you think that premise is interesting – wait until you see the game in action. The combat looks absolutely brutal with our armored protagonist seamlessly switching between weapons and abilities to get through hordes of enemies. Airtight City 2.0 doesn’t have a release date at this point, but stay tuned to learn more.

IGI Origins

Toadman Interactive is bringing back a beloved franchise with IGI Origins, which looks like everything we would want from a modern entry in the series. IGI Origins presents itself with a fresh coat of paint thanks to updated visuals, and the hybrid gameplay loop of action and stealth is sure to captivate gamers once again when it releases for all major platforms sometime in the future.

Moon Mystery

Moon Mystery – at its core – is a game about uncovering the many secrets that lie undiscovered on its surface. Cosmonauts ask some pretty intriguing questions about our race to the moon, such as what was the real reason behind the mad race to reach the moon. It’s pretty rooted in alternate history and sci-fi fiction, and the gameplay seems to put equal amounts of attention to combat and exploration – which has us salivating for the final release.

Bramble: The Mountain King

Bramble: The Mountain King might seem like an ordinary adventure game at first glance, but upon further inspection – you will soon realize that it’s so much more than just that. The story (which is inspired by dark Nordic fables) sees you embarking on a grand adventure to rescue your sister from dark threats that haunt these lands. The journey will be punctuated by interesting set-pieces, gargantuan threats, and emotional story beats that should make Bramble: The Mountain King a game worth looking into.

Little Devil Inside

Neostream Interactive’s Little Devil Inside has been a long time coming, and suffice to say – it looks really promising. The trailers showcase our explorer characters going through a mundane personal life as well as an adventurous professional life as they search for monsters. The game will be open-world, and the minimalist cartoony art style really draws you in.

Aftermath

Aftermath puts you in the shoes of Charlie as he trudges through a city in vain hopes of finding his daughter, all while dealing with perils of an inhuman invasion. Apart from that, Aftermath will also put a lot of focus on Charlie’s own mental health issues such as PTSD which will have huge ramifications on gameplay as well. Aftermath looks really intriguing, and while it doesn’t have a release date just yet – we are really looking forward to playing it.

Vigilancer 2099

Vigilancer 2099 is all about your player character taking up on bounties to pay off some huge debt. Envoidant Studios’ upcoming action adventure is steeped in references to famous works of cyberpunk art, but it also has enough flavour of its own to help distinguish it from the rest of the pack. The visuals look gorgeous, and while gameplay details remain scant for now – Vigilancer 2099 certainly has our attention.

ILL NESS

Not to be confused with Project ILL from Clout Games, ILL NESS is another upcoming different survival horror experience from publisher ASDStudio. ILL NESS is inspired by a classic horror fiction novel Dreamcatcher, and it paints a bleak and dim world where survival seems unlikely – but you must trudge through all odds to remain alive. It looks absolutely brutal, and it’s currently set for a 2022 release date – though that would be updated soon.

Where Winds Meet

Much like Project: The Perceiver that we discussed before, Where Winds Meet is an open-world action RPG that’s set against the backdrop of ancient China. And it also tells a story that’s deeply personal to the protagonist, as he faces a moral dilemma between upholding his code of conduct or use everything in his power to defeat his enemies. The combat and traversal are looking pretty fast paced, and they all culminate to form a dynamic gameplay proceeding that looks really enchanting.

Pioner

In so many ways, Pioner looks like a true next-gen survival game. GFA Games’ paints a bleak world on the brink of destruction, and that gives way to interesting gameplay elements like well-designed first person combat, PvP elements, and base building among others. Pioner will be coming to PC sometime in the near future, and more details will be revealed soon.

Paranormal Tales

Digital Cybercherries’ upcoming Paranormal Tales is a collection of stories about people who went missing in a dark forest, and players must play through footage of those recordings to find out the mystery behind those disappearances. Paranormal Tales utilizes a rather unique bodycam perspective, and the developers are teasing some disturbing horror elements that are likely to get under your nerves. And that has us excited to know more about it, and hopefully we will get to play it soon.
