Five years into the current console generation, Call of Duty will stick with cross-gen releases, it's claimed.

We’re finally at the point where cross-gen games are becoming increasingly rare, but it looks like the games industry is still not completely done with them. In fact, one of this year’s biggest releases is allegedly also coming to last-gen consoles.

Charlie Intel has claimed on Twitter, citing anonymous sources, that this year’s Call of Duty game will still also launch for both PS4 and Xbox One, as all Call of Duty games have done since the beginning of the current console generation.

PS4 and Xbox One both continue to enjoy active player bases (the PS4 in particular), especially where Call of Duty is concerned, so the series’ decision to stick with cross-gen releases doesn’t come as a huge surprise. That said, those hoping for significant technical leaps allowed by older and outdated hardware no longer being supported are going to have to wait longer.

As per a leak last year, Call of Duty 2025 is going to be a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and will also featured remastered versions of the 2012 title’s multiplayer maps. Read more on that through here.

Call of Duty 2025 could still release on PS4 and Xbox One, per sources. Supporting last-gen in 2025 is a wild decision, but the game is in development for the old consoles from what we’ve heard.

This may be a reason as to why there can’t be two big maps in Warzone at same time. pic.twitter.com/mfkmOR65Fz

The sequel is reportedly set five years later and will feature remastered maps from Black Ops 2, round-based Zombies and the Pick 10 system.

Reports of Call of Duty 2024 being a new title in the Call of Duty: Black Ops series did the rounds last month, so it’s perhaps surprising to hear that Call of Duty 2025 is allegedly another Black Ops title. According to Insider-Gaming’s Tom Henderson, who spoke to several sources, it’s codenamed Saturn and serves as a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

Set in 2030, five years later, it features the return of “fan-favorite protagonists” and a new villain. Interestingly, it will feature remastered maps from Black Ops 2, much like Modern Warfare 2 (2009)’s multiplayer maps were added to the recent Modern Warfare 3. However, one source said the plan is to have new and remastered maps at launch.

With Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War out next year, it’s unknown if the Carry Forward initiative will be used, with a source telling Henderson that this is a “completely new game.” As such, Call of Duty 2025 is still in early development and reportedly features an overhauled movement system, the return of Pick 10 for creating classes, Gunfight and round-based Zombies. Stay tuned for further updates in the coming months.
