These are certainly bleak times for the Blue Bomber. What was once Capcom’s poster boy has has now faded into obscurity. With the exception of the downloadable releases that were Mega Man 8 & Mega Man 9, our favorite blue bomber has hardly made an impact this gen. The cancellation of Mega Man Universe was only the first blow, and now Capcom has struck another nail in the coffin. Today, the publisher has announced that the development of the MMORPG Mega Man Online has officially halted.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise since we’ve hardly heard anything since its debut in 2010. The game was being developed in conjunction with Korean team Neowiz Games, and the decision was mutual.

“Both companies have continually discussed to find agreeable points on quality, development time, communication and etc,” said a Neowiz representative. “Ultimately, both companies have agreed to stop the development of Rock Man Online early last November.”

Interestingly enough, the developer had claimed that the project was nearing the final stages of development. So it still remains a mystery why they made a decision to throw away over two years of progress. Although the prospect of a Mega Man MMO wasn’t exactly enthralling, this is a further testament that Capcom shows little interest in the franchise that put them on the map.

Star Trek Online has been officially canned for the consoles.

Developer Cryptic confirmed to VideoGamer that there will be no STO for Xbox 360 or PS3. This news comes only a week after Cryptic Studios stopped work on their other MMO, Champions Online; “100% of our focus is on making the current PC product the best it can be. There are no current plans for a console version of Champions.”

Speaking to VideoGamer, Cryptic said that Star Trek Online is “Pretty much in the same boat as the Champions console version right now,” he said.

“It’s something we can readily do in terms of technology. We’ve had it up and running on certain consoles, and had plans and designs in order to take advantage of those platforms. But as it stands right now it’s a little difficult to make that final leap on the business side of things. So, currently, just like Champions, the console version of Star Trek Online is on the back burner.”

This contradicts the developers statement in 2008 that STO would be developed for consoles and PC.

It is the latest in a spate of canned console games, such as Age of Conan, Champions Online, and now Star Trek Online.

Remedy have given a full explanation as to why the PC version of Alan Wake was canned in favour of 360 exclusivity.

Speaking to VG247, Remedy’s Oskari Häkkinen said, “Saying that Alan Wake is best played of a sofa with 5.1 surround and a big TV screen, I think is more of a preference than anything else. We’re not going out there to say that PC gamers can’t enjoy it from their own PC set-up. We’re certainly not saying that. We have a strong heritage in PC gaming as well.”

“But, frankly, we’re a small studio. We’re 50 people, and being a small studio, it makes a lot more sense for us to focus on one platform. Currently we’re fully focused on the Xbox version, and [as for] what the future holds, we haven’t got anything to announce, and we haven’t thought that far right now.”

As far as a future PC release goes, Häkkinen said that they would have to ‘sit down’ with Microsoft to ‘see where the title goes.’

Alan Wake releases for the 360 on May 18th in the US and May 21st in the UK.
