Senior VP Christian Svensson explains its cancellation.

Remember that supposed gritty reboot of Mega Man, codenamed Maverick Hunter, that was unearthed not too long ago, with the game taking place from a first person shooter perspective and featuring several ex-Metroid Prime developers working on it? The same game that was cancelled for reasons unknown?

Today, in a new post on the forums, fans asked about the project and debated on whether it should have really been cancelled or not. Corporate officer and senior vice president Christian Svensson actually responded before the thread was locked. His response?

“Given the lack of consensus in this thread alone, that should tell you what you needed to know. Suffice to say, there were very polarized opinions internally on this project as well.”

Essentially, with the amount of disagreement inside and outside the company, it makes sense that Capcom would rather pull the plug rather than sink tons of money into something not everyone would like. DmC: Devil May Cry, anyone?

Street Fighter 3: Third Strike from Capcom does not feature Sony’s network DRM. Capcom stated that they made this move because it was necessary for tournaments. Previous Capcom games like Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2 used the DRM that required you to be logged in to PSN all the time to play. The reason given was game sharing, but they have reversed the decision to use DRM with Street Fighter 3: Third Strike.

The game is also part of PSN play program from Sony that is similar to the Summer of Arcade games from Microsoft. Christian Svensson, senior vice president of strategic planning and business development, wrote on the Capcom Unity forum that, “The game does not make use of Sony’s network DRM.”

“It is playable offline. We deemed that very important for future tournament use.”

The first game in the PSN play program is Street Fighter: Third Strike and it will start on August 24th.
