Going out of your way? Be careful - these bonus areas take no prisoners.

When it comes to pain and suffering, some games are seemingly built on delivering. Not every game wants you to experience sadistic design all throughout though. Sometimes, they tuck it away into special levels, areas, maps and chapters that unleash all manner of suffering. Let’s take a look at the 15 toughest bonus levels in video games.

Hollow Knight – Path of Pain

The White Palace is already a pretty haphazard place full of platforming terrors but necessary for getting the best endings. The Path of Pain, added with the Grimm Troupe DLC, is on another level though. There’s your average range of spikes, buzz-saws, thorns and whatnot but this area tests your mastery of bouncing off obstacles with the Nail. Even if you happen to get through it all, there are two Kingsmoulds waiting to be fought.

Like finding an oasis in the desert, these checkpoints stretched credulity.

Checkpoints and save points in video games can be rather underrated. You don’t really notice their importance until they’re gone…or unless some they’re spaced, forcing you to go long stretches without dying. Let’s take a look at 15 of the most unfair checkpoints in gaming.

Blood Stained Sanctuary – Cave Story

The Blood Stained Sanctuary is truly the toughest challenge that Cave Story has to offer. It has three sections filled with death spikes, falling blocks and respawning Butes. By the time you get to the end of the third section, it’s a battle with the first boss Heavy Press. But wait, there’s more! You then proceed down a passage to face the toughest boss in the game, Ballos with his four phases. Now make sure you do all of that in one go or you have to start from the beginning.

The more the merrier, right? Here are 15 times you fight sequential bosses.

Bosses sometimes come in pairs, but we don’t mean ganging up on the player. Sometimes you’ll take down one towering foe only to discover that another cowers behind them. Here are 15 times you fight sequential bosses.

Metal Gear Solid 2 – Metal Gear Ray followed by a battle with Solidus Snake

Raiden goes through a lot of tough battles in Metal Gear Solid 2, but the toughest is certainly the wave of Metal Gear Rays that appear out of nowhere to attack the hero at the end of the game, weakening him for his confrontation with the conniving Solidus Snake. And what a finale it’s as Raiden finally gets his revenge on Solidus who killed his parents,

This world is full of lies and deceptions.

You’re playing a game, walking forward through a dungeon, when you spot something on the ground. “Oh look!” you exclaim happily. “Look at this length of rope I found! This is gonna come in handly later when I’m strangulating an NPC for no reason other than I was bored.” Cool find, right? You bend down to pick it up, but then- BAM! It’s not a length of rope. It was all a huge deception.

The game pulls the rug out from under your feet, as it turns out that the length of rope was actually a venomous snake, and it had been lying there for thousands of years, pretending to be rope, just hoping that someone would notice it and fall for its wily tricks. “Ha ha!” the game snaps happily. “Gotcha!”

Well played, game. Well played. Here are fifteen times we underestimated innocent looking things in games, only to be completely blindsided by their true, evil colours.

JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING IN PREY

Even the simple act of walking around a seemingly dull environment in Arkane Studios’ Prey is a horrifying prospect. The central hook of the Mimics, the main enemies you come up against most often throughout the game, is that they can take the shape of literally anything in the world. Every step you take is fraught with tension, every object you pick up or look at can be potentially deadly. That chair you see there? That boring little pen lying on the table? That plant standing in the corner? Everything in Prey is out to get you.

Nintendo’s former Indie lead Dan Adelman (the man responsible for Nintendo platforms receiving games like World of Goo and Cave Story) has given us some insight into his personal thoughts on Nintendo’s Wii U console.

Sales performance has been poor across the board and is most commonly blamed on the lack of a vast gaming library and the high price bracket, Dan Adelman however, feels differently. Speaking on ASK FM, he say’s, “Wii U is not selling as well as it deserves to. It has a lot to offer with great games you can’t get anywhere else,”, “The value of the GamePad hasn’t been justified. But the name Wii U is . I think that cut sales in half right there.”

It’s no secret that Nintendo’s attempt at next generation gaming with the Wii U hasn’t exactly been much of a success when compared to Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4; they are placing faith in the upcoming Super Smash Bro’s game and the new Legend of Zelda game (that is still in development and not even close to being released) to turn things around and boost sales, but what do you blame for the Wii U’s poor performance?

We are still waiting for the 3DS release of Cave Story, a game which was billed as a launch title and is already available as a PC, Wii and DSi title. What is so special about this long awaited remake?

“Feature-wise, at a first glance, there might not seem like a lot,” said Jack Niida, producer of the game. “The graphics changed from 2D, extra stages, new items, hidden NIS characters, but aside from that what makes this game so great is the controls, the feel and the way you play the game is what makes it shine.”

“For the old time fans of Cave Story, there aren’t brand new stages, but what we did for these stages is we expanded it. So, there is more to it than there was before. There are new areas to explore, long time fans will definitely see the difference. Daisuke Amaya spent a long time creating this game and everything has been tweaked to fit the latest console.”

Nida also added a special reveal for fans of NIS America, without naming any names: “You can probably expect our most popular character in there. Aside from that, you might see him as an item, as well.” (check the thumbnail for this article for a possible hint)

Alas, they only disappointing news, apart from the fact that the game isn’t out yet, is that the rumour of the original PC version or the DSi version of the game be included as bonus has turned out to be rubbish: “That’s one thing we were talking about too, but the problem was the amount of space on the card size,” Niida said. “We sort of squeezed everything in and at this point we don’t have enough space for it.”

Thanks to Siliconera for the info.
