“Everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward," said Sony's Jim Ryan.

Sony’s press conference at CES 2023 wasn’t too over the top, but it still dropped some big announcements. Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan revealed that over 30 million PS5 units had been sold thus far, with December 2022 being its biggest month ever. However, Sony believes it will be “much easier” for everyone to find a PlayStation 5 at retailers worldwide from now on.

Ryan also revealed, “Everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward.” While time will tell just how true that is, the console is available to purchase through online retailers like Amazon. It’s in stark contrast to supply deficiencies spurred by a lack of components and overwhelming demand, which have been present since the PS5’s launch in November 2020.

It should be interesting to see how this affects Sony’s rumored plans for a new PS5 model. Reports have indicated that this model will have a detachable disc drive and that the manufacturer seeks to sell 30 million units in the fiscal year 2023 alone. Time will tell, so stay tuned for more details.

Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan reveals that December 2022 was the biggest month ever for PS5 console sales.

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 has sold over 30 million units worldwide. The last major milestone announced for the console was 25 million units shipped as of September 30th, 2022. Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan also revealed at CES 2023 that last month was the biggest ever for PS5 console sales.

This is only the beginning, though, as the console manufacturer is reportedly aiming for 30 million sales in the fiscal year 2023 (from April 1st, 2023, to March 31st, 2024). A new model is also rumored to be in development, featuring a detachable disc drive. Sony has yet to confirm any of this, however.

In the meantime, it’s launching PlayStation VR2 on February 22nd for $549.99 with over 30 titles. It also announced Project Leonardo, an accessibility controller kit for the PS5 that offers customizable controls for players with disabilities. Stay tuned for more announcements and updates from CES 2023.

The accessibility controller kit offers swappable components, buttons of different shapes and sizes, custom layouts, button mapping and more.

During CES 2023, Sony announced an accessibility controller kit for PS5, codenamed “Project Leonardo.” It’s touted as highly customizable and works “out of the box” for players with disabilities. In addition to working with different third-party accessibility accessories, it can be paired with Sony’s DualSense controllers. Check out the trailer below to see it in action.

Designed following discussions with accessibility experts and organizations like AbleGamers, SpecialEffect and Stack Up, Project Leonardo offers swappable components like analog stick caps, buttons of different shapes and sizes, and so on. These can be arranged in various layouts, including adjusting the distance of the analog sticks from the gamepad. It doesn’t need to be held, with AMPS mounts or tripods with 360-degree orientation available, and one can program a “north” orientation for the analog sticks.

Software functions include Button Mapping, with multiple buttons mappable to the same function, or two functions mappable to the same button. There’s also the option to store up to three control profiles and switch between them quickly with the Profile button at any time.

The accessibility controller is usable standalone, with another Project Leonardo, or with the DualSense. Players can connect up to two Project Leonardo controllers and one DualSense controller for a virtual controller, which allows friends and family to assist in playing. These can be turned on and for dynamically.

Four 3.5mm AUX ports are included for connecting various switches and third-party accessories. Regarding Leonardo’s design approach, Sony Interactive Entertainment designer So Morimoto said, “Project Leonardo is part of the PlayStation 5 product family and is based on the same design concept. We were inspired by the idea of all players enjoying the world of PlayStation together.

“Our team tested over a dozen designs with accessibility experts, looking for approaches that would help address key challenges to effective controller use. We finally settled on a ‘split controller’ design that allows near free-form left/right thumbstick repositionability, can be used without needing to be held, and features very flexible button and stick cap swapping.

“Because players can customize Project Leonardo according to their needs, there is no one ‘right’ form factor. We want to empower them to create their own configurations. The controller can also flexibly accept combinations of accessibility accessories to create a unique aesthetic. I am excited that the design will be completed through collaboration with players rather than presenting them with a single form factor.”

Project Leonardo is still in development, and Sony continues to gather feedback. It’s looking to share more details regarding launch timing and features in the future, so stay tuned.

Different weapon types, magic, and enemies for the rogue-lite shooter are showcased ahead of its early access release for PC in early 2023.

During Nvidia’s Special Address at CES 2023, a new gameplay trailer was showcased for The Astronauts’ Witchfire. Entering early access this year, it’s confirmed to support Nvidia DLSS 3. Check out all the explosive action below.

The Astronauts has a strong pedigree in first-person shooters, having worked on Painkiller and Bulletstorm before. Witchfire is pretty different, though, set in a semi-open world with rogue-lite elements. The story sees the player as a hunter, taking on witches using all kinds of weaponry and magic.

These can range from revolvers and shotguns to crossbows and rifles. Some have interesting perks, like the crossbow bolts ricocheting between enemies. You can also shock, slow them down, and much more with magic. Regarding DLSS 3, studio co-founder and creative director Adrian Chmielarz said in a press release, “You start the game, push all graphics options to the max. You enjoy it for a while, but then, especially if it’s an action game, you realize that the frame rate is king.

“So you start lowering the quality of visuals to achieve that smooth gameplay. DLSS 3 allows the seemingly impossible, high frame rate without compromising the visuals. A no-brainer for a game like Witchfire, which is both action and beauty.”

Witchfire is currently planned to enter early access for PC in early 2023. Stay tuned for more details and gameplay in the coming months.
