How does Shadow Complex perform on current gen consoles and PC?

One of the greatest XBLA games of all time, Shadow Complex has now made its way on the PS4 and Xbox One, along with the PC version. For those who are unaware, Shadow Complex features classic side-scrolling action and was presented in 2.5D format although the game’s world was rendered in full 3D. The game was met with critical acclaim and is generally considered among the top 10 Xbox 360 games.

However, it’s been seven long years since the original released on the Xbox 360. How much has changed since the original launched? Let us find out.

To begin with the remastered version still runs on Unreal Engine 3 however it uses an updated version of the older build. Furthermore, you will notice the remastered version of the game has lost its classic dirty and grainy look. Instead it’s now replaced with vivid colors. We are not sure whether we are fans of this palette change and to be honest we prefer the original look. But again, this is subjective so some fans may like the new look. Moving on, some of the volumetric effects such as the fog as seen in the opening helicopter scene has been removed in the remastered version. Why exactly this was removed is unknown at this point but this is again one of those reasons why we prefer the original look.

The color palette change is also accompanied by lighting changes. Some of the areas which were dimly lit in the original game are now clearly lit thanks to the dynamic lighting employed by the remaster. The cutscenes have also undergone minor changes. In the Xbox 360 build one can clearly observe compression artefacts; the remastered version however looks much better and sharper. Character models have also undergone slight changes. The level of detail on the faces is slightly better in the remastered version and their armor looks much better in the latest build.

However, it seems that the depth of field effect has been removed in some places and some levels lack ambient occlusion compared to the original. Due to this there is a general level of flatness in some areas.

Talking about the console versions, there isn’t much to choose from on the PS4 and Xbox One. They employ the same quality of texture filtering, feature the same core assets and have identical performance and resolution parameters (1080p). The PC version on the other hand has been optimized rather well and the recommended requirements are pretty low. The developer recommend a Nvidia GT 540 1GB/AMD 5550 1GB GPU and Intel i5/AMD A4 CPU, so it goes without saying that most PCs won’t have any issues maxing this game out at 1080p and 60fps. Graphical settings are quite limited. You can change the texture quality, opt for a better AA solution and Enable DX11 (which you should). We tested the game on our trusted Nvidia GTX 970 and i5 4690k and had absolutely no issues in running the game at a full 1080p resolution and 60fps.

Compared to the console versions, the PC build features slightly better anti-aliasing and texture quality. Although you would have to really zoom in and run them side by side to observe the differences.

So where do we stand regarding Shadow Complex Remastered? Well, to be honest we have a rather mix feeling towards the work that has gone into the remaster. Yes, the resolution and frame rate has been improved along with updates to volumetric and alpha effects but if we were to be honest with you, if you have already played through the original game, there is no reason to pick this up again. There isn’t much here besides the better frame rate and better resolution. Furthermore, the game is already backwards compatible on the Xbox One, so existing owners who already have the Xbox 360 version have one more reason to not pick this up. However for everyone else, you owe yourself to play through this once and it goes without saying the remastered version is the way to go, provided you are not a fan of the original dirty look.

It will also be interesting to see what Chair Entertainment is doing with the Shadow Complex IP. They are certainly interested in developing a sequel in the form of Shadow Complex 2 but whether it will actually happen is something that remains to be seen. We hope that working on the new consoles have given Chair Entertainment a launch pad for a potential sequel which will hopefully run on Unreal Engine 4.

One of the best games of last generation, Shadow Complex, will launch on the PS4 very soon- Shadow Complex Remastered will be, as announced, launching on the PS4. It will be available on May 3.

“Delivering Shadow Complex to the amazing audience of PlayStation gamers has always been a goal for us at Chair, and we can’t wait to introduce all of you to the game next month!” ChAIR co-founder and creative director Donald Mustard said about finally bringing the acclaimed hit Metroidvania, which predates the current Metroidvania rage among indie games and developers, to the PS4.

Shadow Complex Remastered will have remastered graphics, which will include updated lighting, post-processing, and visual effects. The updates aren’t just graphical, as the game will also have new contextual melee take-downs, new Achievements, and new Master Challenges.

You can check out a video for the PS4 version of the game below. Are you going to be getting it? Let us know in the comments section.

Featuring updated graphics and gameplay mechanics.

Epic Games and Chair Entertainment’s Xbox 360 exclusive Metroidvania, Shadow Complex, is now available in all of its remastered glory on Xbox One as Shadow Complex Remastered. The re-release is “updated with new graphical enhancements, additional Achievements, and Master Challenges.”

In addition, the developers also added some new gameplay mechanics, such as dynamic takedowns, to keep things fresh beyond just the graphical facelift that this version of the game obviously has over the original. Essentially, if you have never played Shadow Complex, this version is the one to start with; and if you’re a veteran of the old game already, it seems as though enough has changed with the remaster for another play through to be worth it.

Shadow Complex was released for the Xbox 360 originally. It received more than 50 Editor’s Choice and Game of the Year awards. It is available to download on the Xbox One right now. Let us know in the comments if you plan to get it!

Chair and Epic’s excellent Metroidvania, the one that came before the current indie Metroidvania trend, Shadow Complex is getting a current generation remaster. The remaster is available right now on PC for free, and it will also be getting a port for the Xbox One, and the PlayStation 4.

Yes, that’s right, one of the biggest Xbox 360 exclusives of last generation is now going to be available for non Xbox gamers, and indeed, PlayStation gamers too. The PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game are due out some time early next year- for now, the PC version is the only one available, and through this month, it’s free. You can download it from the game’s official website.

Check out what the game looks like in the brand new trailer for the game, which you can see for yourself below. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage, information, and news from The Game Awards, especially since there are more world premiers of games due.

Chair Entertainment are best known for two things- for their excellent Xbox Live Arcade exclusive Metroidvania, Shadow Complex, from a few years ago. And for the iOS series Infinity Blade, which is made using Unreal Engine technology. and always serves as a graphical showcase for the platform, as well as a case for ‘hardcore’ iOS gaming.

Well, if you are one of those people who have, for whatever reason, been curious about Infinity Blade, but refuse to play it on iOS (in which case, why exactly are you curious about it?), then rejoice- it appears that it may be coming to the Xbox One. Well, at the very least, it may be coming to Xbox One in China.

The game will apparently be Kinect based, and it should help the console in the region, where, after a successful launch, it has largely struggled, mostly because of a lack of games on it, thanks to the Chinese sensors.

If you are interested in seeing what it might be like, here is some leaked footage for you.

It'd be a real shame to miss the third and final game in the series if you own an iDevice.

There are plenty of mobile gaming fans out there and there are even more people who own smart phones. There is no shortage of people who enjoy both, but for the most part if you’re a dedicated gamer who is into mobile gaming and handhelds then you’ve probably got more than a smartphone. ChAIR Entertainment is trying to change all that by turning iOS7 into a gamer’s mobile platform with thier Infinity Blade series. If you own an iPhone and you’re sick of playing Angry Birds then the newest installment of the Infinity Blade series is for you. Gamers and Apple fans sure have something to look forward to with this title, as it promises to bring a complex, and intricately crafted experience to iDevice owners and an experience that is almost unheard of for the mobile smartphone market

Well, let’s get the basics out of the way first. Infinity Blade III is an RPG that was released exclusively for iOS 7 on September 18th, 2013 and is promising to be the exciting conclusion to the Infinity Blade series. It’s bringing back the main protagonist from the previous titles as they battle with the Workers of Secrets, and their army of warriors.

This franchise has come a long way since it’s initial release. If you’ve played some of the previous titles you may remember some of the frustration with the controls, and the lack of response. Those are a thing of the past now as ChAIR drives forward, with not only updated graphics, but a better control scheme for all that lovely, real-time combat and swordplay. The game’s story picks up where it left off from the second game, as you try to avenge your father’s death, however things have become decidedly more complicated and deep as this franchise has moved forward, with new villains as well as allies being revealed as the series has progressed.

This post-apocalyptic, world of tomorrow has a strong connection to classic fantasy, though after what seemed like much beating around the bush in previous games it has finally come out that the abilities utilized by the characters don’t revolve around magic at all, but incredibly advanced technology. It’s portrayed in a very magical and indescribable light, however, and really has a fantastic feel to it; and the technology is so advanced it might as well be magic.

Infinity Blade III looks absolutely beautiful, especially for a game that is running on a smartphone. Not only that, but it’s also incredibly flexible. Gamers who aren’t quite ready to make the jump to the new iPhone or to upgrade their OS should still be able to play this as long as they’ve got an iPhone 4.

Now, with that said there are some wonderful little extras that owners of the new iPhone will get, like better graphics, lighting and effects, but even without all the bells and whistles turned on this game still looks gorgeous. While it may not outpace the more graphically intensive hardware, mobile included. The Infinity Blade series certainly takes smartphone gaming to the next level of detail, immersion and good old-fashioned story telling. If you’re worried about the gameplay being centered off of the touchscreen than you can put those concerns to rest. The combat flows well as the player slashes quickly across the screen with their finger to make an attach, and the movement is fluid and smooth when the players are outside of combat.

Gamer’s who own an iPhone should really take this prized piece and run with it. For about $7.00 USD this game is an absolute steal. ChAIR is trying to do what few other developers have attempted, let alone succeeded at in the smartphone Market. With all the saturation of iDevices out there, it’s no wonder this was the platform ChAIR Entertainment chose to go with, but even they may have outdone themselves with the third game in the series. There is some wonderful talent behind this game, from the voice acting to it’s team of developers there’s really a lot to look forward to.

If iFans and gamers really want to see more high quality titles like this in the future of the iPhone, or just mobile hardware in general this is a series that deserves the support of the gaming community. It’s at the very least a wonderful example of how far mobile technology has come in such a short amount of time and all that can be done with a dedicated development team. It’s games like The Infinity Blade series that will continue to push mobile gaming forward and help legitimize smartphones as a power, mobile gaming platform.

Running on Unreal Engine 3, Infinity Blade 3 was infamous for being delayed for several years before finally re-emerging at Apple’s reveal event for the iPhone 5S and 5C this month. Thus far, the reviews are fairly good with high ratings from a few publications and websites. Stay tuned for more.

Chair Entertainment’s Infinity Blade 3 has been a long time coming, but with the recent Apple Press Conference, it was revealed that the game is very much alive and will be heading to iOS. A new cinematic trailer has been released for the game, recapping the story of the series and setting up the premise for the third game.

The game will continue the storyline from Infinity Blade 2, in which it was revealed that protagonist Siris is actually the Deathless Ausar, who locked the Worker in his prison in the first place. Though the Worker escaped, trapping Siris forever, it would seem that the Father of the Deathless still has an axe to grind, naming Ausar as his enemy. Long story short, some one’s gonna get got as the conflict with the Deathless and the Infinity Blade continues.

Infinity Blade 3 will be releasing on September 18th for iOS. Stay tuned for more details.

If a Linkedin profile is to be believed.

According to the Linkedin profile of one of the quality assurance testers over at Chair Entertainment, the people behind the popular Infinity Blade series, it appears as though Infinity Blade 3 is now in development for iOS devices.

The original Infinity Blade was released onto the Apple Apps Store in 2010 to great success. At it’s initial launch the game sold 270,000, netting over $1.4 million in the first four days after release. Up to this point, Infinity Blade was the fastest grossing app ever released for iOS.

In 2011, the teams at Chair Entertainment and Epic Games outdid themselves, releasing Infinity Blade II to much critical acclaim. IGN scored it a perfect 10/10, making it the only game for iOS to receive a perfect score on their website. GameSpot dubbed the game “the perfect sequel,” giving it a 9/10 rating.

With such successful games as Infinity Blade I & II, we can’t help but expect the highest caliber of gaming from the upcoming Infinity Blade III, if this profile update proves true.
