Whether it's in outer space or on sweet Earth, these city-builders offer tons of potential.

There are few greater pleasures than building a city in video games. Something about the absolute power offered, of overlooking all these people as you expand further and further, entices us to no one end. If you’d like to share in that feeling, then here are 15 of the best city building games that must be played.

Cities Skylines

After what seemed like a long, long time, Cities Skylines arrived and delivered a city-building experience that truly succeeds old-school SimCity. The sheer joy of getting your city up and running, watching it buzz about as you beautify it, manifests excellently in Cities: Skylines. Throw in Steam Workshop support for mods, tons of support from the developer and plenty of content updates for even more long-term replay value.

Paradox Interactive has announced that the Marvellous Monorails expansion for Cities in Motion 2, which adds monorails as a mode of transit to your city, is now available for $9.99. Also, Cities in Motion 2 franchise is now available for Linux users

For $9.99, you’ll pick up five monorail vehicles and be able to decorate your city with them in interesting ways. For example, elevated rails allow them to run above your planned out city with nary a problem. Though best for circular layouts, they’re far more affordable than metro lines. You will need to make a choice between big and slow cars or speedy and expensive carriages though so manage wisely.

Cities in Motion 2 is either way an interesting game that challenges you to manage the transit network of a city by handling buses, trains, ferries, subways and much more. Players will need to create tracks and routes and manage factors such as their budget and population concerns.
Paradox Interactive’s Cities in Motions 2 has received a new expansion, Marvellous Monorails, to add some new monorail transport vehicles to the city planning simulation. You can also add new elevated rails for the five monorails, thus giving your city a new look. This also marks the release of the franchise for Linux, with the whole franchise now available for the platform.

Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive stated that, “We believe in Linux as a platform for the future of gaming. Gamers who currently use Linux are a smart and demanding bunch, and they expect versatility and an experience that fits their personal preferences, which makes our games a great fit. We’re bringing Cities in Motion to Linux because we believe it’s just the type of game that Linux users will enjoy.”

Best suited to circular layouts and offering a choice between speed and size, Marvellous Monorails promises to revamp public transportation within Cities in Motion 2. What are your thoughts on it? Let us know below.

Manage your cities' transport systems today.

In case your patience has already worn thin for that other city management simulator (if it hadn’t already) Paradox Interactive has just recently announced the release of the Cities in Motion 2. The game is a transit simulation, yes but is equally challenging in that you must build and sustain an efficient mass transit network for different cities.

The game has been developed by Colossal Order for PC and Mac, and features a large number of new vehicles, transit hubs and even day/night cycles. Paradox has revealed a new trailer showing off said cycles, which you can view above.

Of course, there are other improvements including dynamic cities, a city map editor, a more robust timetable system and many more changes made in response to player feedback (so you can bet that annoying DRM isn’t one of those things).

Cities in Motion 2 is currently available for $19.99 on PC and Mac and can purchased directly from the official website.

In case you’ve been extremely bummed off of Sin City – whether you hate the game’s oppressive DRM or are just fed up of the overall broken mechanics – then you’re in luck.

Paradox Interactive has just announced that pre-orders are now available for Cities in Motion 2, which will be releasing for the PC and Mac on April 2nd for $19.99. It may not allow for wide-spread control of the city, but at least you can play it offline.

As a bonus for those who pre-purchase the game, you’ll be recipient to the “Modern Collection” DLC that throws in even more trams and trolley buses along with a boat. You also have a new stop type, that helps to reduce congestion by allowing all trams, trolleys and buses to stop at the same place and then switch vehicles.

Cities in Motion 2 will also include cooperative and multiplayer mechanics. You know, separate from the main campaign. Check out the new trailer and head here to to pre-order the game.
