Jeff Strain talks about the success of the open world zombie survival horror.

Speaking to the Xbox blog, Undead Labs founder Jeff Strain recently revealed that the open world XBLA zombie survival game State of Decay managed to sell 500,000 units since release. The game initially got attention for selling 250,000 units in just two days.

“State Of Decay breaks a lot of rules. Permadeath, switching characters, having to manage the ‘feelings’ of your fellow survivors, offline progression – these are all things developers traditionally avoid, but we felt were essential to creating a true survival experience.”

“Record breaking sales are great, but the thing we’re proudest of is that people who bought the game are having a great time playing it. That’s why we do what we do, and what keeps us going back in to do it again.”

Strain also revealed that the XBLA version will have some new content additions in the coming months. “I can tell you we’re working on a sandbox mode designed to be a pure survival simulation.”

Currently, Undead Labs is working on the PC version for State of Decay along with a follow-up set in the same universe titled “Class4”. The latter is still pending approval from Microsoft however.

Plenty of details to be hammered out, according to community director Sanya Weathers.

State of Decay has been a strong success for Undead Labs, selling 500,000 units since its release a little more than a week ago. While a PC version is in the works for Steam, the developer also has plans for a follow-up set in the same universe which will be an MMO.

Unfortunately, according to community director Sanya Weathers, the project still needs approval from Microsoft. “We cannot begin working on Class4 without a greenlight from Microsoft (who owns the IP, as part of the bargain that led to the funding and development of State of Decay) and a mutually agreeable contract.

“We have to agree on where we think the technology is going to be in a few years (since the game will take a few years to develop); we have to agree that we have the same goals; and we have to agree on how we’ll collectively run and support the final game. Those discussions are still in progress.”

Stay tuned for more as progress on the Steam version of the game continues.
