Cobalt Reloaded.

Cobalt is the action co-op platformer from Mojang, the folks who brought us Minecraft. It promises to be an interesting take on the genre, something which its copious use of bullet time sequences should make abundantly clear. What, you didn’t know this game will have bullet time? Well, it will, and a whole lot of it, too. You can check out some instances of it for yourself in the trailer below.

Cobalt promises to be a very interesting experience- it’s long been in development, and the little we have seen of it since Gamescom has certainly got our interest piqued. With Mojang making bank on Minecraft right now, it remains to be seen if they can replicate their success with any other game (they did fail with Scrolls).

Cobalt launches tomorrow. It will be available to play on Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PCs running Windows 10 as well. You can see the new trailer for yourself below.

'Our current build is buggier than we are comfortable with.'

Although Mojang’s Minecraft continues to be available on just about any platform that is capable of running it in spite of Microsoft acquiring them last year, their upcoming game, Cobalt, was set to be exclusive to just the Xbox One and PC. It looked great, too- a sidescrolling co-op adventure that would make for some fun gaming with the family.

However, just ahead of its October 30 launch, Mojang have announced that the game is now going to be launching in February 2016- a hell of a delay, and also, apparently, a necessary one, since the game seems to have a lot of pre-release bugs that need to be squashed.

“We’ve been working on Cobalt for a long time and, though the game is feature complete, our current build is buggier than we’re comfortable with,” Mojang said in a blog post. “We want every part of Cobalt–the campaign, challenges, and local and online multiplayer to live up to your expectations, no matter which platform you play it on. That’s going to require a bit more development time.”

That said, it won’t need four months- Mojang said as much. The delay is as long as it is because of how console game development and releases work.

“Releasing a game on console is an especially complicated business,” they said. “There are release windows, and certification things, and all kinds of boxes that need to be ticked before games can be released into the wild.”

Cobalt will now launch early next year. Stay tuned.

Update: Will also come to Steam.

Update: Cobalt will also launch on Steam.

Original Story:

Mojang’s Cobalt, their intriguing couch co-op oriented action platformer game, was re-announced at Microsoft’s Gamescom press conference today, where it was confirmed that the game will be coming exclusively to Windows 10 and Xbox One.

The game was originally revealed back in 2013, but had since sort of dropped off the face of the earth. Like with many other games, assuming it to be vaporware would not have been uncalled for, but it would have been wrong, as it seems the game is actually pretty far along in development- so much so, that it will be launching as early as October.

The Xbox 360 version, which was announced back when the game was originally revealed, seems to have been cancelled, though this is not yet confirmed. However, for now, assume you need to be upgraded to the latest version of Microsoft’s platforms if you want to check out the latest and greatest from the creators of Minecraft.

Minecraft developer's multiplayer shooter heading to Microsoft's consoles.

Further extending its support for Microsoft, Mojang Studios announced at a pre-Gamescom press briefing that it’s upcoming multiplayer shooter Cobalt will be heading to Xbox One and Xbox 360. A release date hasn’t been confirmed as of yet, however, nor has there been any indication as to whether it will be hitting either platform first.

Developed by Oxeye, Cobalt was announced in 2011 and has been in an alpha stage on PC. Oddly enough, PC release details are conspicuously absent but we’ll probably be seeing the shooter on the platform in due time.

Mojang has already revealed at E3 that it is working on an adaptation of Minecraft for the Xbox One, although no release details were given for that either. Considering that Minecraft has been one of the biggest breadwinners for Xbox Live Arcade since its release – besides doing gangbusters with its retail release – Cobalt should be a good investment for Microsoft.
