The homage to 16-bit side scrollers is unstoppable.

Keiji Inafune’s Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter has broken down every single barrier conceivable, garnering $1,948,192 from 33,732 backers with 21 days still to go. It’s already on track to receive Wii U, PS3 and Xbox 360 pots once it crosses $2.2 million, but more importantly, Inafune and his team at Comcept USA have announced that should it reach $3.3 million, they will be developing ports of the game for PS4 and Xbox One.

Of course, the game will also be receiving online co-operative play, in which the second player will control Beck for asymmetrical co-op play. This will be made available once funding reaches $2.75 million.

It’s insane to see Mighty No. 9 reaches this level, but considering that this will be Inafune’s tribute to Mega Man and the classic 16-bit side-scrolling shooters of yore, it makes sense. It will also be releasing on PC and is pegged for a Spring 2015 release date. Stay tuned for more details as they arrive.

Creator Keiji Inafune wants both games to exist for the benefit of gamers.

Keiji Inafune is on a pretty big high these days. His recent Kickstarter project Mighty No. 9, which aims to bring the mechanics that defined Mega Man and 16-bit side scrolling shooters to a new generation, managed to amass $1,714,959 thus far, surpassing its original $900,000 goal, with 29,763 backers behind it. Even more amazingly, there’s still 25 days left for the crowd-funding campaign, which shows no signs of slowing down.

Despite being a spiritual successor of sorts, Inafune wouldn’t mind if Capcom released a new Mega Man as Mighty No. 9 came to the market. Speaking to Kotaku, he stated that, “If the question is just, ‘Can they exist as two different franchises at the same time?’ then my answer is yes, of course. Capcom should be doing things with the Mega Man franchise just like we are with this original game.

“Ultimately, it would be great for the fans because then they would be able to play even double the content that they otherwise could. So, in this perspective, yes, please, let both games exist.”

Mighty No. 9 is currently set for PC, releasing for Steam and will head to home consoles, Mac and Linux as further stretch goals are met.

Keiji Inafune's Mega Man successor is unstoppable.

Keiji Inafune’s spiritual successor to Mega Man, Mighty No. 9, which recently went up on Kickstarter for funding has already surpassed its $900,000 funding goal within two days. In fact the grand total is still rising as 20,783 backers have thus far contributed $1,204,281 towards the game’s funding.

Developed by Comcept USA, Mighty No. 9 is a 16-bit side scroller which takes all the best known elements of Mega Man and updates it for a new generation. A number of series’ veterans are working on the title, including Inafune himself, and takes input from the fans.

Mighty No. 9 will be available via Steam or on a digital distribution channel of one’s choice (if they back funding that is). It will also be heading to Mac, Linux, Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii U as the stretch goals are surpassed. There have also been indications that Inafune is interested in bringing the game to PS4 and PS Vita with Remote Play support but nothing solid as of yet. Stay tuned for more updates.
