Nintendo Switch Online Adds New Sega Genesis Games, Including Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Zero Wing, and More

Nintendo has done a solid job of expanding the catalogue of classic games it offers to subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online across both its subscription tiers, and while the majority of those efforts have been focused on N64 games in recent months, other libraries have already received some love here and there. Now, for instance, some new Sega Genesis haves been added.

Available to subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack tier, four new games have been added to the Sega Genesis catalogue. Those are retro compilation Mega Man: The Wily Wars, classic beat ’em up Comix Zone, sidescrolling shooter Zero Wing, and run and gun title Target Earth (also known as Assault Suit Leynos).

That’s a solid batch of new arrivals, especially when you consider the fact that since Mega Man: The Wily Wars is effectively four games in one, this new batch adds seven games to the subscription service’s Sega Genesis library.

Sega Genesis Mini Releases on September 19th

Hopping aboard the trend of re-releasing older consoles in miniature versions, Sega has announced the Genesis/Mega Drive Mini. It will retail for $79.99 and release on September 19th, with a whopping 40 games included. This version of the console is based on the Model 1 Genesis, which originally launched in August 1989 in North America.

The first ten games that Sega confirmed would be coming to the platform are:

Sonic the Hedgehog
Ecco the Dolphin
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Space Harrier II
Shining Force
Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
ToeJam & Earl
Comix Zone
Altered Beast
Gunstar Heroes

Along with 40 games, consumers will also receive two replica Genesis controllers with USB functionality, a USB to micro-B power cable, a power adapter (in North America only)m and an HDMI cable. Sega also confirmed that M2, which worked on the Sega Ages and Sega 3D Classics Collection, would handle porting the games.

Given Sega’s library of classics, re-releasing the Genesis with these games included is a pretty good idea. Time will tell if, as far as its quality is concerned, it’s more in line with Nintendo’s NES Mini and SNES Mini and less akin to Sony’s PlayStation Classic. Sega Date EU PSN Release Of Mega Drive Classics

Yup, another day – another mega drive classics collection. This time with trophies, leaderboards and online co-op… (sigh) If you haven’t already played it to your heart’s content; the original Sonic The Hedgehog was released on PSN today and Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe 2, Altered Beast and Comix Zone will all be coming to the network very soon. All of them will support trophies and leaderboards and all, bar Sonic 1 and Comix Zone, will support online co-op. The games will be free for PS Plus subscribers and £3.19/€3.99 a pop for everyone else.

Here is a partial list of release dates:

* Sonic 2 – free for PS Plus users on April 6th, released onto PS Store on April 20th
* Streets of Rage 2 – free for Plus users on May 4th, released onto PS Store on May 18th
* Golden Axe 2 – free for Plus users on June 1st, released onto PS Store on June 15th
