Can Cloud Imperium reach the next million before the end of 2014?

When Cloud Imperium Games, led by industry veteran Chris Roberts, launched the crowdfunding campaign for its sandbox space sim Star Citizen, no one could have envisioned it reaching the levels of success that it did. However, since launching its campaign in late 2012, Star Citizen has managed to amass $67,828,789 in crowd-funding from 694,793 backers. It’s been one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns in history.

That being said, the expectation is that the next milestone of $68 million will be reached before the year ends. It makes sense considering the anticipation of the game. And really, since we never thought it could go beyond $50 million, letalone $10 million or $5 million, who’s to say that $68 million isn’t possible?

Star Citizen recently received the Arena Commander 1.0 module which adds several options for PvP to backers of the game. What are your thoughts on it and will the campaign hit $68 million before the year is out? Let us know in the comments below.

Might look to Kickstarter for funding.

Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski has been rather vocal since leaving Epic Games, whether it was about the Xbox One supporting DRM or concerning his newest project rumoured to be called “Silverstreak”.

Now, speaking to GamerHub, Bleszinski has revealed that his next project could be unveiled in March. “Right now I’m looking at procuring funding for that; expect some news hopefully in the next 4-6 weeks.”

While he’ll be procuring funds from investors or a venture capital firm, there is also an interest in going the Kickstarter route. “I would like to go directly to the consumer if possible, although with the safety net of providing outside financing. I think Kickstarter is a beautiful, romantic thing. I think that for every success story there’s ten failures, sadly, on Kickstarter.”

The actual success rate is more like 3.5 projects out of 10, by the way.

Cliffy B also spoke about Steam Early Access and the success its brought developers like Bohemia Interactive for DayZ. “But I think it’s possible with the success of DayZ, to have the concept of pay-for-alpha or pay-for-early-access, and help the community forge and shape your game. Build the company while you build the game while you build the community, at the same time.”

The documentary project has cleared its goal with 19 days remaining.

Video Games: The Movie, which launched a Kickstarter not too long ago for $60,000 to fund its post-production process, has achieved its crowd-funding goal. Thus far, the project is at $70,052 from 567 backers with 19 days to go for completion and has now introduced stretch goals to the equation.

This includes $80,000 netting narration by an unknown celebrity; $100,000 allowing Mediajuice to pick up “popular” songs to use in the movie; and $120,000 bringing in a famous band or composer for composing the movie’s soundtrack.

Video Games: The Movie is a documentary directed by Jeremy Snead created through a year’s worth of footage with figures from the gaming industry. It purports to tell the story of video games, and includes interviews with several developers and famous geek icons.

This includes Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski and many more. The film will highlight several issues relevant to the industry including stereotypes, gender bias, video game violence, video games as art and much more.

Return to sanity's requiem with the spiritual sequel to Eternal Darkness.

Today we had reported that Shadow of the Eternals was revealed. Now we have some new details about it.

Comprised of veteran game developers, with Silicon Knights’ Denis Dyack acting as Chief Creative Officer, Precursor Games has launched their crowd-funding campaign for Shadow of the Eternals, the spiritual sequel to Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem.

The game will consist of twelve episodes (comprising the first season), with the first episode to be launched in the second half of 2014 for PC and Wii U. In a statement, the studio says, “Featuring an ensemble cast, Shadow of the Eternals will span over 2500 years of human history. Players will question their own perception of reality as they progress through this mind-altering psychological horror.”

Episode one will have you playing as detective Paul Becker who must investigate a massacre at Pleasant View Hospital, Louisiana with the two survivors having no memory of themselves or what occurred. The investigation will lead players to Cachtice Castle, Hungary in 1610 – and to the sinister Erzébet Bathory.

The current goal for episode one is set at $1.5 million, with 30 days remaining. Crowd-funding is happening through the developer’s site, with $39,525 pledged by 618 individuals as of now.

Being developed by Precursor Games and not Silicon Knights.

Last year, when X-Men Destiny was released to universally bad reviews, several employees began coming out about what was happening at Silicon Knights (long story short: Denis Dyack’s insanity during the Too Human phase was just the start). But one interesting revelation was that the company was diverting resources meant for Destiny to work on the sequel to Eternal Darkness.

That project never got very far though. Now, however, IGN posted a teaser trailer for something called Shadow of the Eternals, developed by Precursor Games. It’s billed as being “from the creators of Eternal Darkness”, and the developers will be announcing a crowdfunding campaign for the same on Monday.

Whether the studio is related to Silicon Knights or is composed of former stalwarts is unknown. We’ll to wait till Monday for more information on just what Shadow of the Eternals really is, beyond that it could be a successor to Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem.
