Crytek confirmed in January last year that it had started development on a fourth instalment in the shooter franchise.

In January of 2022, Crytek announced that it had started working on the next instalment of the acclaimed first person shooter franchises, Crysis, though you’d be forgiven for having forgotten all about it, given the fact that in the nearly two years since then, there have been next to no updates on the game. So what exactly is going on with Crysis 4?

Well, it’s still in the works, even if it isn’t at a stage where Crytek is ready to show it off. Speaking in a recent interview with MP1st, David Fifield, general manager of the studio, provided a brief update on the game, stating that it’s still in the works, and that it’s being worked on by “a great team”. More details on the title, according to Fifield, will arrive “down the line.”

“Crysis 4 is currently still in development and we have a great team working on it,” he said. “We will update once we have more details on it down the line.”

Shortly after the announcement of Crysis 4 (or the announcement that the game was in development), it was confirmed that it was being directed by Mattias Engström, who, during a lengthy tenure at IO Interactive, had served as a level designer on Hitman (2016) and Hitman 2, and as game director on Hitman 3.

Currently, there’s no word on which platforms Crysis 4 is being developed for.

Hitman 3 game director Mattias Engström will be leading development for the next installment in the Crysis franchise.

Earlier this year, Crytek confirmed that the next entry in the Crysis franchise is in the works. While there’s been mostly radio silence on the matter since then, Crytek has now revealed that Mattias Engström will be serving as the game director for Crysis 4.

Engström (who recently left IO Interactive) has also served as the game director for Hitman 3 and a level designer on both Hitman (2016) and Hitman 2. Furthermore, he has also served in the role of a level designer at Ubisoft, with credits on Far Cry 3 and Assassin’s Creed Revelations. In a Twitter update announcing the same, Crytek also highlighted current job vacancies at the studio for Crysis 4’s development, ranging from art director to lighting artist to development director and more.

Given this information, it’s not hard to see that Crysis 4 is still in the very early stages of development, which was also highlighted by Crytek when the game was first announced. It’s probably going to be a while till we have our first proper look at Crysis 4, so stay tuned for more on the shooter.

Crytek has gone ahead and officially confirmed that a fourth entry in the sci-fi first person shooter series is finally in the works.

The Crysis games have always had a strong and dedicated fanbase, but in spite of having enjoyed plenty of success, the series never got a fourth sequel. While the first three games have been recently remastered, and the originals are still lauded for their technical achievements (especially the first entry on PC), fans have always wanted the next entry to arrive. It seems the developers are on the same wavelength with the community.

Crytek recently took to Twitter and shared a teaser trailer confirming that the next entry in the Crysis franchise is in works. The video is a fairly cryptic one, showing a red ball of flame blowing up, some hexagonal pillars rising from the ground, a shot of dilapidated buildings, with the video ending by showing a number 4, officially confirming that Crysis 4 is in development at long last.

This comes shortly after the announcement got leaked by Crytek China on Chinese social media BiliBili, which got taken down immediately. Either way, no more information has been made available about what platforms Crysis 4 will launch for, what it’s story and gameplay will entail, or even when it will launch.

In a blog update published on the official Crysis website, Crytek CEO Avni Yerli said that the studio is “working hard to bring you a truly next-gen shooter”, with several positions across the team looking to recruit more people for the project.

Yerli also confirmed the game is in early development, saying, “Right now the game is in the early stages of development so it will be a while yet, but we wanted to bring you the news at this time as we are so hyped for the future, and to let you know that we will be listening to our community.”

Crytek recently took to Chinese social media site Bilibili and seemed to confirm that a new Crysis game is in the works.

It’s been quite some time since Crytek last released a new entry in its sci-fi FPS franchise Crytek, though series fans have still had something to latch on to of late, with a remaster of the first game and a remastered collection of the entire trilogy having launched in the space of about a year. Many had hoped that this recent activity means Crytek might be gearing up for a full-fledged new Crysis game in the future- and it seems that might indeed be happening.

As reported by Eurogamer, it seems Crytek itself may have leaked Crysis 4 before the game could be officially confirmed. Crytek China recently took to Chinese social media site Bilibili, and in a post that has since been removed, seemed to confirm that Crysis 4 is in development. You can check out a screencap of the post (roughly translated) below.

In the absence of an official announcement, for now we’re going to have to treat this as a rumour. We’ll keep an eye out for any details though, so stay tuned for more updates.

Say what?

Crysis 3 is, as we all know, the end of the Crysis trilogy. But like every almost every other franchise these days which was meant to be a trilogy but ended up being much more (Halo, Mass Effect, Assassin’s Creed to name a few), it may have more in store after Crysis 3 comes out next month.

And what’s more, the next installment- if there is a next installment- may not even be a first person shooter.

“You know, I think at this point I don’t want to give anything away,” Crytek producer Michael Elliot Read told Dusty Cartridge. “But I think the Crysis franchise itself has life left in it. Whether it’s in a different game type format, whether it’s expanding upon this, it’s hard to say. That’s going to be up to the designers at the end of the day.”

“But I think we’ve built… Crysis was always intended to be a trilogy and I think that over that time we’ve built a really cool universe,” he continued. “We haven’t really gone in and said ‘Hey let’s put Nano suits and clown suits and stuff and completely violate and sell our IP.’ We’ve done a fairly good job at maintaining that, so I think in terms of the universe, we have a lot more life left in that to go back and try some unique stuff.

“Whether it’s FPS or not I have no idea, but there’s definitely a future in the franchise.”

What next, an Uncharted card game?

Oh wait.

[OXM]

"I wouldn’t name it Crysis 4 at this stage because it would be misleading."

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has mentioned that the fourth Crysis game should not be called Crysis 4 and which is something they don’t intend to do, apparently. It’s clear that Crytek wants to end this current story arc with their upcoming Crysis 3. which is scheduled for launch next year.

“[Crysis 3] is the end of the story of Crysis, but it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the franchise,” Yerli told Eurogamer.

“We are excited about the DNA of Crysis and of the franchise,” he continued. “There can be literally tonnes of titles out there within the franchise. Unlike Far Cry, this time around we feel very flexible about Crysis.”

He explained his reasoning behind not calling it Crysis 4.

“I wouldn’t name it Crysis 4 at this stage because it would be misleading. Crysis 4 would imply the story just moves on,” he said.

“Normally in this time right now we would already have pre-production going on, but because we want to make this something much more radical and new we are looking at it as a bit more of a long term thing. It’s too early to talk about it for these reasons.”

Crysis 3 is shaping up to be a fantastic game, and hopefully it generates enough revenue for them to break even or even make a profit.
