CyberConnect2's sequel features new weakness combos, assists, new route spots, and an unlockable ultimate form for the Taranis.

CyberConnect2’s Fuga: Melodies of Steel is getting a third game soon. Launching on May 29th for Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, Fuga: Melodies of Steel 3 sees Malt disappearing. Naturally, the remaining children must board the Taranis again and find him. Check out the first teaser trailer below.

The crew will take on new threats while venturing into the Berman Empire (like the Crimson Knights). However, there are major gameplay changes like weakness combos for increased damage per hit, assists, and a “legendary warrior” who can join in to help. Power Spots and Assist Transmissions have been added to routes, while the Akasha Panel allows for “secret events” and navigating “a timeline to change your fate.”

If that’s not enough, the Taranis has an ultimate form unlocked through the Omega Terminal. Fuga: Melodies of Steel 3 will launch with Standard and Deluxe Editions, the latter including an 80-page digital art book, mini-soundtrack, some items, and soccer costumes. You also get a Dummy Soul to use the Soul Cannon (which would otherwise kill a crew member) once.

Stay tuned for more details and check out our review for Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R polishes up the original game well, but fails to modernize its online functionality.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure hasn’t seen nearly as many video game titles as fans of the spectacularly insane anime series will tell you it deserves, but JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle, which released late in the PS3’s life in 2013 in Japan and 2014 in Europe and North America was perhaps the best instance of such a thing happening. It translated the personality of the series well with outstanding visuals and music and smartly coupled that with a familiar control scheme that fans of Tekken or the Dead or Alive games were able to adjust to fairly easily. The game was critically received quite well and would host a healthy amount of characters both on disc as well as a handful of DLC characters that would come later. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R is basically a re-release of all of that with a few tweaks and new additions to boot, so suffice it to say, if you even moderately enjoyed the ride the first time, you’re in for a treat this time too.

Along with several new characters on top of the DLC ones released for the PS3 version of the game, bringing the roster up to a staggering 50 characters, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R also has redesigned its campaign mode into a far more interesting “all-star Battle mode” which makes it feel more like a story mode you’d get from any other AAA fighting game these days, as opposed to the more thrown-together grind fest in the original version. Some new stages are thrown in as well as the ability to have a secondary character assist you throughout your fights with special attacks. This isn’t a new idea, as other Japanese fighters like Aquapazza and others have implemented similar things in the past, but it still proves to be a great way to add some more depth to any fighting game and it’s certainly welcome here. I’m also happy to report that the performance has been given the boost it deserves with a rock-solid frame rate and what appears to be some slightly improved character models. If you look closely enough at some smaller animations like mouth movements, you will still probably get the impression that it’s an older game underneath, but the game still shines just fine where it really counts during battles.

"JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R is basically a re-release of all of that with a few tweaks and new additions to boot, so suffice it to say, if you even moderately enjoyed the ride the first time, you’re in for a treat this time too."

Along with a reasonably deep move set that features light, medium, and heavy attacks, you also have various hazards on each stage to avoid or use to your advantage. Other characters can also come and go causing even more mayhem. Once you really get your arms around everything, which won’t take too long, you’d be hard-pressed to not enjoy the chaos that seems to constantly unfold. While I wish there was a bit more of a flow to the combos like the games that it emulates, I did enjoy the move sets overall and how different stances can completely change up any given character. It’s something that can make almost any character playable for almost any type of player and that’s a nice thing to see in a genre where you normally don’t have that luxury. With all of that combined, I rather enjoyed the battles and couldn’t wait to see what craziness I was in for with the next one.

Visuals on this remaster are quite nice on the PS5. Despite a native 4k resolution I never noticed any frame-rate drops in my playtime. Granted, the crazy action could have very well obscured the occasional hiccup from my vision, but as far as I could tell the game was running very well and with no major issues to report. The art style is also something that anime fans as well as fans of the fighting genre will almost certainly appreciate to one extent or another. Characters are absolutely brimming with personality and pop off the stages nicely. Mixing 2D art into a 3D world can sometimes go badly, but JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R does it in a way where it somehow feels pretty natural.

Some tenants of the original manga’s aesthetic sneak their way in as well, making it stand out very much from other 2D anime-style fighters. Even if the gameplay was bad, which it’s not, the sheer amount of fan service being delivered to JoJo fans on the visuals alone would likely be worth the price of admission for many. From special attacks, finishers, and even regular combos, just about each and every movement a character makes in this game is guided by that character’s personality, and I’m hard pressed to think of a fighting game that has this level of appreciation for its source material and lets it show in such a convincing way through the gameplay – certainly one with this many characters. It really is a sight to see this much attention being paid to each character with a roster this large.

"Mixing 2D art into a 3D world can sometimes go badly, but JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R does it in a way where it somehow feels pretty natural."

Of the several ways to play you will undoubtedly be tempted to take the game online. Sadly this is where the game starts to fall apart a bit, as the netcode seems to have been improved minimally from the original release, if at all. This, by comparison to other modern fighting games, makes JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R seem woefully out of touch and in over its head. For the handful of matches I was able to find, I rarely had much fun after coming off the exponentially more fun offline modes. Once compared to other, recent similar fighting games like DNF Duel or even Street Fighter 5, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R isn’t even in the same league when it comes to online functionality with the lag and connection issues it currently exhibits. It’s a baffling, and dare I say bizarre, oversight for sure, and will almost certainly ruin the game’s chances of expanding its audience into more serious circles of competitive players if not addressed.

Still yet, if you enjoy a good 3D fighting game with formally 2D characters, or just want to experience one of the shockingly few examples of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure existing in video game form, you will still have more things to enjoy about All-Star Battle R than not.

This game was reviewed on the PlayStation 5.

The tale of Goku and friends looks better than ever but is there anything else on offer?

One of the major releases to kick off 2020, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is developed by CyberConnect 2 and published by Bandai Namco. It’s a massive action RPG that promises the most definitive video game adaption of the series yet. Out on January 17th 2020 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, here are 15 things to know before buying it.

Covers Major Story Arcs

The main appeal of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is the inclusion of all the major story arcs. It starts with the Saiyan Saga from battling Raditz to Nappa and Vegeta before heading off to Namek to deal with the Ginyu Force and Frieza. Players will also battle Cell and the Androids and eventually collide in the ultimate battle against Majin Buu.

Main and Support Characters

There’s a fairly strong roster of characters available to play as, which is to be expected. Goku, Gohan (including his Great Saiyaman avatar), Vegeta, Future Trunks, and Piccolo are all available for battle. You also have support characters like Krillin, Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu and Yamcha who can be called in for special attacks like Krillin’s Destructo Disc or Tien’s Solar Flare.

Special Characters

During key gameplay moments though, other iconic characters will become available. Majin Vegeta will go up against Majin Buu while Super Saiyan Gotenks, Super Saiyan 3 Goku and Super Saiyan Vegito will each contend separately with Super Buu. Even Gohan in his Ultimate form will have a chance to fight Super Buu, though it doesn’t necessarily end very well for him.

Zones

Seeing Goku and friends flying through the various zones dotting Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot might make it seem like an open world game, but it’s actually divided into several different zones. Producer Hara Ryosuke and director Kimoto Kazuki told DualShockers in an interview that these areas are “very large” and “wide expansive” zones which open up as the story progresses. As for how to choose zones, simply fly all the way up – eventually you’ll zoom out and an overview of all the zones will be visible. Choose a zone to go to and you’ll descend accordingly.

Combat

If you’ve played or even seen the Dragon Ball Xenoverse games, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s combat is going to be very familiar. As a three-dimensional beat ’em up, which allows for both ground and air battles, players will have basic attacks, Ki blasts, the ability to charge Ki, assist moves, items and Transformations. Each character has their own unique moves and transforming will open up more options like Super Saiyan 3 Goku gaining the Super Kamehameha, EX Spirit Bomb and Dragon Hammer Strike moves.

Side Activities, Training and Eating

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Dragon Ball Z game without training. You’ll still complete side quests and activities for XP, visit different retailers, engage in mining and even go hunting. However, it’s training that will unlock special moves down the line. Eating is also important since you can temporarily boost stats with meals. Apparently, Chichi, Goku’s wife, offers the best stat bonuses with her meals though how often these will be available is unknown.

Soul Emblems

Along with XP, players will be earning Soul Emblems – these serve to boost your stats and provide different “effects”. Collecting them means completing different side missions. In essence, they sound like bonuses on top of the usual XP grind which is a nice incentive to go out of your way. However, you can also battle old foes for Soul Emblems, which is an entirely separate mechanic onto itself.

Collect Dragon Balls, Battle Old Villains

Again, since this is a Dragon Ball game, players can collect the Dragon Balls. How you’ll go about this – whether it’s by just exploring the world with a radar and playing games of “hot and cold” or through completing different missions – is still to be revealed. However, the Dragon Balls can be used to revive major villains. This allows for bonus battles with their own side stories – complete them and you’ll receive Soul Emblems and XP as rewards.

New Character Interactions

The Dragon Ball franchise as a whole has a large cast of characters, many of whom Goku didn’t interact with in the Dragon Ball Z arcs. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will offer a chance to meet those pre-Saiyan Saga characters, some who have grown up and may offer different side stories and side quests. These could then reveal conversations between characters that have been unknown till now.

Untold Backstories

Along with new character interactions which can potentially open up different side stories, there will also be some new backstories that weren’t in the manga. These are being penned by creator Akira Toriyama himself so while potential retconning could be made, there’s also potential for some memorable new developments. We’ll have to see how that pans out and hope it doesn’t break continuity.

Minigames

Dragon Ball Z has a lot of fighting but there are also some more light-hearted moments. Remember the anime filler episode about Goku and Piccolo learning to drive? That’s being included with players needing to unlock a driver’s license. This gives access to a car that can be driven across the various areas and which will could have its own minigames or missions. Another minigame is included based on teenage Gohan playing baseball and trying not to reveal his strength.

New Original Character

Along with new backstories and interactions, there will also be a brand new character named Bonyu designed by Toriyama. Formerly of the Ginyu Force, Bonyu will be available in a special training mission. Pre-ordering the game will unlock the mission early so it might be worth it to find out what her story is.

Switch Version Not Planned

If you were hoping for a Nintendo Switch version to play on the go, there’s some bad news. Bandai Namco has confirmed that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is only planned for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. This doesn’t complete rule out a Switch release for the future since it should be able to handle the visual fidelity (as seen with Dragon Ball FighterZ). Just don’t hold your breath in anticipation.

Xbox One X and PS4 Pro Support

There’s yet to be confirmation on whether the game will run at 4K resolution on PS4 Pro. Xbox One X players needn’t worry though – 4K support has been confirmed in the official Microsoft Store listing. Other visuals enhancements have yet to be detailed but it seems the sharpest console version could indeed be the Xbox One X.

Bandai Namco's Brand Manager Mark Religioso speaks with GamingBolt about the upcoming anime RPG.

Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are such massive cultural phenomenons that they’ve sprouted several anime series, films, toys, clothing and much more. Not to mention the many games that have come out of the series’, as well. Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is the next step in the Dragon Ball evolution, bringing back action adventure into a series best known for fighting games. It’s beautiful palette of colors, combined with a cel-shaded artistic style that does the anime justice are just a few things Kakarot is doing right. We had a chance to sit down with Bandai Namco’s Brand Manager Mark Religioso, to ask him over 9,000 questions about Dragon Ball Z Kakarot… Unfortunately, he was only able to answer a few of them.

"Obviously, it’s a monumental feat. The development team have done a really good job at bring the game to life. "

The Dragon Ball Z anime is one of the biggest worldwide phenomenon across all media- what’s it like to have the responsibility of adapting it to video game form, which has doubtless been a dream for millions for so long?

Obviously, it’s a monumental feat. The development team have done a really good job at bring the game to life. Some have been known to work on the Ultimate Ninja Storm series. So they really nailed down that transitioning the anime content to the actual game content to that cel-shaded style. They’ve done an amazing job, and those guys are hardcore fans of Dragon Ball, too. So this is a dream game to work on.

Can you tell us how much of the anime is covered by Kakarot?

we have an announced how much content is in the game. But if you look at the E3 trailer you’ll see some of the Saipan Saga, as well as his door with Frieza. So, more information to come. So if the title has anything to say about the game that should be enough info.

Combat is supremely important in any Dragon Ball title, given the source material- what sort of combat system Kakarot will be going for?

Here, with the producer wanted to do was emulate a Dragon Ball Z anime that turns into an actual game. We really wanted it to be more real time, and we wanted it to feel monumental. So when you go into a battle say it’s Radditz — say it’s a boss — it’s not going to be equal footing. It’s not going to be Dragon Ball FighterZ. It’s definitely real time action, with trademark moves from the enemy, as well.

You originally announced Project Z as a 2019 title, but Kakarot’s announcement confirms it as a 2020 release. Can you tell us why it got delayed?

We really just wanted to work on it more. The team wants to do an awesome job, pushing the game out and doing the anime content justice.

"We really just wanted to work on it more. The team wants to do an awesome job, pushing the game out and doing the anime content justice."

Does Kakarot add stories and characters of its own on top of what it shows from the anime, or are you developing it purely as a faithful adaptation?

It’s based on Dragon Ball Z, but if you can tell from the demo, there’s characters like Nam who appeared in the original Dragon Ball anomie. So you’ll see some of those secrets. And that’s just a nod to help big the producer is the franchise as a whole. So lots of interactions in the story as well, too.

How large of an open world environment can we expect to see in Kakarot?

We’re not actually touting this as an open world game. They really wanted to emulate the anime experience. In the anime, Goku didn’t just go around fighting random guys. These worlds are very vast, and as you can see from the demo. You can explore a lot of different things and do a lot of different activities. So this is a good slice of what kind of maps are going to be in the game.

Can you speak to us about world traversal in Kakarot and how it will function, mechanically speaking?

In the game you have Nimbus, that’s Goku’s tried and true transportation through Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Also, you can fly yourself. More information to come on how you can travel through the game.

About how long can players expect an average playthrough of Kakarot to be?

We haven’t revealed that. I can tell you this, it’s not going to be like 12 episodes, or 12 hours for one battle, right? That would be amazing. I think that’s how it should be. If this is any indication, the Saiyan Saga has a lot of monumental battles and different phases. More to come in the future.

Do you have any plans for a Switch version?

Right now, we are developing for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Those are the only platform we’re looking at at the moment.

"This game is basically a love letter to all Dragon Ball Z fans."

What resolution and frame rate does the game run on the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X?

I know we’re supported for 4K. But I’ll have to double check and confirm those features.

Our time’s almost up here. Is there anything else you’d like to add about Dragon Ball Z Kakarot?

This game is basically a love letter to all Dragon Ball Z fans. It’s been a long time since we’ve had an action RPG based on mechanics in Dragon Ball Z [anime]. As you’ve said, it’s grown into such a big pop cultural phenomenon, and we’re excited for Dragon Ball Z fans as well as new fans of the franchise as well.

CyberConnect 2's action RPG won't have a "true" open world.

Bandai Namco’s Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, developed by CyberConnect2, may look awfully familiar to your average fan. That’s because the story of Goku and his battle against enemies like Vegeta and Frieza has been captured numerous times since the series’ inception. The action RPG will be going a lot further though, promising the most intense recreation of Goku’s adventures yet.

That means featuring the same enormous areas that Goku and friends usually fight in. However, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot won’t have an open world per se. Speaking to DualShockers, producer Hara Ryosuke and director Kimoto Kazuki said the world is divided into several “very large” areas. They’ll become available as the story progresses.

“I kind of want to mention I don’t think this is a true open world in the way we’ve kind of come to understand the definition of an open world today,” said Ryosuke. “There are several very large and wide expansive areas or zones if you will where you can experience different sagas of the Goku story. They’ll be unlocked as you progress through the narrative.

“To kind of give you a visual sense of how this is going to work; when you played the demo you saw that one area that Goku was interacting and progressing the story in. If you continue to ascend you’ll zoom out into this world map interface. From which point you choose an area and dive into that. So that’s how the areas and zones are connected.”

The lack of an open world may help the game, since the series is known more for its memorable fights. This approach provides a large world to explore, while keeping a stronger focus on story aspects (like new character interactions) and combat. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is scheduled to release in early 2020 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Even if CyberConnect 2’s Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 doesn’t end up significantly changing the series’ gameplay formula, it should be the definitive game when it comes to the character roster. According to a recent announcement, Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 will include characters from The Last: Naruto the Movie.

This essentially means that you’ll see grown-up versions of Naruto, Sasuke, Hinata and Sakura. The Last: Naruto the Movie takes place after the ending of the manga and follows the series’ characters after they’ve grown up, gotten married and had children. Whether said children – or other characters who have also grown up – will appear remains to be seen.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 will be heading to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Steam in 2015. Are you looking forward to it or playing as the Naruto movie characters? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and stay tuned for more information on the game’s release.

New gameplay video from Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3.

CyberConnect2 has just let out a brand new video for their upcoming fighting game Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3. The video showcases a duel between Roshi and Kisame. Check it out after the break.

The third entry in the Ultimate Ninja Storm series features the biggest roster in the series yet with over 80 playable characters. Other changes include interactive environments, and the ability to trigger awakening mode at any time during the fight with the restriction of only being able to use it once per battle.

The game’s campaign will pick up from the ending of Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2. As you can see from the video, the game’s presentation is simply sublime. The game features a comprehensive colour palette and painstakingly fluid animations. Any scene taken out of context from the game can easily pass as an episode from the show itself.

Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 is slated to ship for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 6th in North America, and on the 8th in Europe.
