Cheaters and completely innocent players alike have been softbanned.

Dark Souls III appears to have a major cheating problem online. But rather than being proactive about the situation, Bandai Namco appears to have taken the easy route by laying heavy on the soft ban hammer. Kotaku reports that many Dark Souls III players were greeted with a “you have been penalized message” upon logging in.

Apparently, anyone who’s game contains invalid or corrupt data is fair game for the softban, which will restrict to playing with other “cheaters.” Invalid game data can arise from player tampering and cheating. But it could also arise from simply running mods. The first Dark Souls game was an infamously shoddy PC port, with a 30 FPS cap and the resolution inexplicably locked at 1024×600. The community-produced DSFix mod went a great ways towards making Dark Souls an actually decent experience on PC, and since then, a small but dedicated modding community established itself around the games.

While Bandai Namco’s concerns over cheating are certainly understandable, we feel that a more proactive, community-friendly approach would’ve been in everyone’s interests. As it stands now, the softban hammer’s sweep is wide: Cheaters are penalized. But so are people running mods, or even people who unwittingly picked up items dropped by cheaters.

Havok for President.

Havok remains this industry’s premier provider of technology for providing a framework of realistic physics- it has been used in so many games consistently over the years, and if you thought that age would lead to developers looking for better replacements, you were wrong. A list of upcoming games that are using Havok Tech was just shared by the company, and basically, pretty much every single major AAA game that you can think of will be using it.

“We were so happy to see all the amazing work of our development partners and the industry in general at E3,” said Havok VP of Sales and Marketing Brian Waddle. “Their hard work and innovation is being rewarded by the sheer excitement of gamers around the world. We’re proud that developers behind some of the biggest AAA titles in the world are turning to Havok to realize the true potential of the new console platforms. We’re beginning to see the future of gaming come to fruition, and that future is spectacular.”

The list of games is:

Star Wars Battlefront – Electronic Arts

Dark Souls III – BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment

Fallout 4 – Bethesda Softworks

Halo 5: Guardians – Microsoft Studios

Horizon: Zero Dawn – Sony Computer Entertainment

Just Cause 3 – Square Enix

Need for Speed – Electronic Arts

No Man’s Sky – Hello Games

The Last Guardian – Sony Computer Entertainment

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege – Ubisoft

Tom Clancy’s The Division – Ubisoft

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – Sony Computer Entertainment

DOOM – Bethesda Softworks

So basically, yeah, Havok is the secret king of the gaming industry.

Still a niche game?

The Dark Souls series has seen phenomenal success with the critics and the community, but in general, it has always been perceived as something a bit niche- something that can only cater and appeal to a few players dedicated enough to put up with its punishing difficulty, while the mainstream rejects it. That premise is now coming under question, as From Software recently revealed that sales of the Dark Souls series have now touched 8 million units sold worldwide.

The original Dark Souls game makes up a staggering 5 million of these sales, with Dark Souls II and Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin making up the other 3 million. 900,000 of these total 8 million sales come from Japan- the rest of these games’ popularity all comes from the rest of the world.

All in all, it is not difficult to see why From and Bandai Namco are already working on a Dark Souls III, which is due to release next year. And between this news, and the commercial success of Bloodborne, it is increasingly becoming more and more foolish to deny the selling power these games have.

The father of the Souls series, Hidetaka Miyazaki is said to be back directing Dark Souls 3.

Fresh off the massive success that is Bloodborne, rumors have begun swirling that From Software is going to be ready to announce a Dark Souls 3 at E3 this year. Even better news for fans of the series is that the man who directed Demon Souls, the original Dark Souls game and Bloodborne, Hidetaka Miyazaki has been slated to helm this version as well. This would actually be a rather triumphant return if he is indeed directing this new game because he was moved upstairs for the second Dark Souls game. Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura co-directed the sequel.

VG247 is reporting that sources in the know have confirmed the third game in the series is indeed coming and will be available to show off at the massive annual gaming conference. While it isn’t yet known just how Dark Souls 3 will be unveiled, the same sources claiming the game exists at all think it will likely be part of Sony’s E3 press conference on June 15. It should be pointed out that there are some who wonder whether this announcement could also be one that announces this will be the last in the series.

If this new game is indeed unveiled later this month, it could be met with mixed feelings. While the second installation in the series was rated a bit higher than the first on Metacritic, there were plenty of fans who simply didn’t enjoy playing the game as much as the first. It should also be pointed out that From Software has not actually confirmed Dark Souls 3 is coming, so keep your fingers crossed and take this information with a grain of salt.
