Whether it's poor optimization, excessive crashes, bugs or unstable frame rates, these ports suffered it all and then some.

As has been established many times, game development is hard. Developing complex systems with graphics, AI, physics, environments, cutscenes and dialogue while expecting it all not to crash is nigh impossible. Nevertheless, what’s proven even more difficult, especially in recent times, is ensuring a smooth experience on PC due to the sheer amount of hardware and configurations to optimize for.

It could be a big-budget title or the port for a classic, some legendary titles have been downright horrible on PC. Let’s look at 15 of them here.

Dead Space Remake

Despite its greatness, Motive Studio’s Dead Space Remake had serious issues when launching on PC. There are the usual stutters and major performance issues at 4K resolution. Unfortunately, DLSS makes things worse due to iffy Variable Rate Shading, which is baked in, causing environments with shadows (read: a huge chunk of the game) to look muddy. Performance has improved with patches, but some players are still reporting frame drops and even freezes.

Bandai Namco spokesperson says there's no official discount announced "at this time."

When Dark Souls Remastered was first announced, it seemed like publisher Bandai Namco would offer discounts to PC owners of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition on PC. This was ascertained via a blurb on the game’s Bandai Namco US Store listing (that was later removed but still screencapped).

A spokesperson from Bandai Namco noted to PC Gamer that Dark Souls Remastered would be “the same price for all platforms” with no discount. However, another spokesperson then followed up by noting that the store listing was an error and that was “no official discount announced for the title at this time.” The full statement is as follows:

“A message regarding a discount for Dark Souls: Remastered was posted on our e-commerce site in error and has since been removed. To clarify, there is no official discount announced for the title at this time. We want to thank our fans for their understanding and hope everyone looks forward to more information regarding Dark Souls: Remastered in the coming months.”

It could be that the discount was announced in advance. Then again, it could also have just been an error and there really is no discount for current owners of the PC version. Dark Souls Remastered will be coming to the Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch on May 25th.

Matchmaking, messaging, etc. are all on the fritz.

Fans who are still busy with Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will have noticed a rather strange thing following the release of Dark Souls 3 – the former’s multiplayer has pretty much ceased working.

PC Gamer noted that all multiplayer functions are down, which ranges from invasions to messaging. On SteamDB, modifications appear to have been made to the game’s config files and it’s somewhat odd that this all occurred on the same day that Dark Souls 3 released.

Bandai Namco US community manager J. Kartje noted these issues on Twitter thankfully. “RE: Dark Souls PTDE Matchmaking. Not sure why it’s being funky. Have made dev team aware – Will share any updates.”

Could this be the publisher’s attempt at freeing resources for the multiplayer in Dark Souls 3? Regardless stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks. Or, you know, play Dark Souls 3 instead. It’s pretty much high time after all these years.

Spoilers for the game inside!

Be warned, spoilers for Dark Souls follow.

Apparently, you cannot access the recently released Artorias of the Abyss DLC for Dark Souls- the pack which costs £10- without having to replay the entire game.

That is, if you’ve finished the game already, or are past a specific point. If you haven’t, you’re good.

Once you finish Dark Souls, the game automatically sends you into a New Game + and autosaves. To gain access to the DLC, you have to do the following:

Defeat Hydra at Darkroot Basin

Defeat Crystal Golem at Darkroot Basin and save Dusk of Oolacile

Defeat Crystal Golem at Duke’s Archive and get Broken Pendant

Touch Black Fog at lake in Darkroot Basin where player defeat Hydra

Namco Bandai confirms there is no way to work around this issue.

According to Eurogamer, that’s at least twenty hours worth of gameplay that you have to go through again if you want access to the DLC, which contains new areas, weapons, enemies, co-op options and more.

Retail version of the PC-based version for consoles.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition just came out for the PC, scoring well and, turning a lot of heads courtesy of an unofficial fan-mod which fixes the resolution and what not.

Console players will get the additional content as DLC but there is a retail edition announced as well.

It will come out on October 26th for the PS3 and Xbox 360, the same day as Windows 8. Of course, it is not relevant to each other but it’s cool comparing things that way.

The PC version received a lot of extra content which will be included in this version too. The pricing is not announced yet. Stay tuned for our review of the PC version soon.

Namco Bandai Europe today announced that the PC version of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition has made its way to retailers, as well as Steam and Games For Windows Marketplace in both Europe and Australasia.

This ‘enhanced’ edition has been specifically designed to catered for the hungry PC gamer, whilst keeping what made Dark Souls great, great. Including an additional PVP mode allowing players to fine tune and tweak battles against each other in online bouts to the death, a much pined-for feature. Dark Souls’ day one edition also contains an art book, original soundtrack, behind-the-scenes DVD, poster and postcards.

Prepare to Die contains new maps, environments, bosses, NPCs and enemies, as well as new armour and weapons, making a return to Lordran all the more enjoyable.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition comes to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on 26th October.
