However, online features for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition on PC won't be supported due to the game's "aging system."

After being disabled due to an exploit that could result in information theft and system bricking, the online features for Dark Souls Remastered are available again on PC. It follows the same features being reactivated for Dark Souls 3 and Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin. Owners of the base version of Dark Souls 2 on PC still need to wait until later for online features to be restored.

It’s worth noting that Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition won’t have its online services restored on PC. This is due to an “aging system,” which makes sense given that this version launched in 2012. It may be a good time to move over to Dark Souls Remastered for one’s PvP needs. Alternatively, you can check out Elden Ring, FromSoftware’s open-world take on Dark Souls, which recently received separate damage scaling for PvP.

For more details on Dark Souls Remastered, check out our review here. It’s available for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Whether it's real-time hack and slash action, looter shooters or big budget open world titles, these action RPGs are the creme of the crop.

Ever since the release of Dragon Slayer in 1984, the action RPG genre has grown by leaps and bounds throughout the decades. Various sub-genres and franchises have been born, each presenting their own compelling combat loops and gameplay systems. Let’s take a look at 30 of the best action RPGs of all time.

Dark Souls Remastered

More than a decade after its original release, it’s still impressive how much Dark Souls has influenced gaming. Dark Souls Remastered is a fairly straightforward enhanced edition, providing a 60 FPS frame rate, higher resolutions, and improved lighting and alpha effects among other minor improvements. But the core of the title, from the excellent pacing and pitch-perfect design, the madness of levels like Sen’s Fortress and Blighttown, and the wonder upon finding Anor Londo remain to this day, as does the solid combat and boss design.

Two dark games coming for May.

Another month is almost over. It’s been a wild few, that much is for sure, and with everything going on it’s nice to have free games out there to try and soothe the dying and broken human spirit as it limps forward into that great oblivion that it almost assuredly is headed towards. That’s a pretty grim thought, but it fits with the rumored May PS Plus titles we could be getting.

An alleged ad is floating around (via ResetEra) that shows Dying Light, the zombie parkour mashup from Techland, and Dark Souls: Remastered, the remastered first title of the beloved Dark Souls saga, as May’s free titles for the service.

As always, this a rumor until the official announcement comes. This ad’s origin also isn’t clear as it’s circulated around the web, but it’s worth noting that the exact same thing happened for last month’s PS Plus games, so it wouldn’t be all that surprising if this turns out to be true.

Much as we may pine, these games won't be getting easier any time soon.

We take for granted how some games are made these days. Easing the player and keeping the experience balanced seems a given but some games subvert this rule. They’re fairly difficult to play from the outset due to their gameplay but also because of one’s lack of knowledge on how to make them easy. These are the games that you kind of wish had an easy mode when they first released rather than making you scratch and claw to make them easy. Not that they’ll ever get optional easy modes but it’s still interesting to look back and examine why they were so difficult. So without further ado, let’s take a look.

Dark Souls Remastered

Combat in FromSoftware games always has a straightforward explanation – hit this button to attack, this button to dodge etc. However, the greater nuances like stamina management, invincibility frames while rolling, the significance of certain stats and what to build towards take more time to understand. That’s not even considering the design of bosses in games like Dark Souls Remastered or the order to go to certain areas given the game’s world design. Suffice it to say but if this or the original was your first Dark Souls, it was a struggle.

The Dark Souls series doesn’t exactly have soundtracks with rousing melodies that you want to listen to as a pick-me-up when you feel down and depressed, but it does have some incredible music regardless—chilling to the bone, and facilitating the games’ amazing atmosphere along the way.

Now, Bandai Namco are going to be making it easier for you to enjoy (is that the right word here for soundtrack that goes to a game that “prepares [you] to die”?) the wonderful music of the bleak world of Dark Souls. The soundtracks for all three Dark Souls games—Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls 3—are available to listen to now on Spotify. Sadly, the Dark Souls series does not include Bloodborne, which is actually my favorite soundtrack among games of this sort, and which I would have loved to listen to.

If you want to, feel free to list to Dark Souls 1’s soundtrack here, Dark Souls 2 by clicking here, and Dark Souls 3’s music here.

Surmounting these challenges made for the most satisfying experiences of 2018.

Games that challenge us, that demand us to truly come to grips with their mechanics in order to get the most out of them, may not be for every single person out there, but they hold a huge place in the hearts of many nonetheless. There’s something extremely gratifying about understanding the ins and outs of a game, and then using that knowledge and skill to throw even the most difficult challenges it throws at you, especially when that game manages to find the right balance between being difficult and being fair. We played plenty of challenging games in 2018, and here in this feature, we’re going to talk about the fifteen that were the most difficult of them all. Without further ado, let’s get right into it.

BELOW

Below was in development for five years, which is a long time to wait for any game. Late in 2018, we finally got to play the game, and what a ride it was. While there’s an argument to be made that it’s difficulty can actually be a bit unfair at times, especially combined with the undeniable repetitiveness, most of the times, the game manages to find the right balance. Struggling through gruelling encounters and navigating around the many deathtraps it throws at you is as satisfying as you would expect.

Time to start making bets, what could these games and projects be?

While Panic Button and Iron Galaxy have made a name for themselves as being the go to porthouses for third parties looking to put their games on the Nintendo Switch, China-based Virtuous is a dark horse contender in this race, too. The studio has been responsible for the Switch ports of Rockstar’s L.A. Noire Remastered, as well as the just released Dark Souls Remastered.

Both ports have been well received, and it seems like the company’s work has gotten noticed. Speaking to Nintendo Life, Dark Souls: Remastered executive producer Lukas Codr said that the company has several more high profile Switch projects in the works, that it hopes will be coming out soon.

“For obvious reasons, we cannot say what exactly we’re working on, but we will definitely have some exciting high-profile Switch games coming out very soon,” Codr said. “By porting Dark Souls we have proven that we can take on any Switch project, so we are confident we will get more projects in the future. As you might have seen in the last few weeks, we’ve also worked on Ubisoft’s Starlink: Battle for Atlas, which has received critical acclaim.”

It remains to be seen what these upcoming games are, but for Switch owners, the news that they have received more work is great overall—it implies more third party projects and games will be coming to the console, which honestly, we can never have enough of.

Dark Souls Remastered and L.A. Noire Remastered are both out on Switch now, as well as PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Nailing the precision of movement, especially in handheld mode, was one of the challenges.

FromSoftware’s Dark Souls Remastered brought the classic forward to a new generation on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. And while some hardcore fans are divided on how much the remaster improves, it still offered a strong experience on the Nintendo Switch. In an interesting interview with VGR, executive producer Lukas Codr and game producer Tang Mengjia at Virtuos (who developed the Switch version) offered some insight into how long it took to complete the project, which suffered a delayed launch as compared to the PS4, Xbox One, and PC version.

Codr revealed that, surprisingly, it took roughly a year to get the port ready. “A bit more than a year. At the beginning, it took us several months until we got a playable version running because we had to make sure that both code and data are fully compatible with 64-bit format. We’ve also spent quite a lot of time on polishing and performance optimization. And since there were both physical and digital versions of the game, there was about a 6-8 week gap between submission and the game hitting the market.”

One of the biggest challenges was getting the game running in handheld mode. This was because of the nature of Dark Souls and the precision required with the movement. According to Mengjia, “Knowing how important precise controls were in the original game (where a less-than-perfect move could easily kill you), we were really eager to try the first playable version in the handheld mode. At that time we did not really know if the game would be playable this way, but pretty much right away our QA and designers started killing monsters with some pretty sophisticated moves, so we knew we would be safe.”

Mengjia did note that Dark Souls coming to Switch would always be a challenge. Hilariously, he noted that getting the team to work on the game more than playing it was one of those challenges. “There are always challenges when porting a game to a new platform, but as we are now familiar with the Switch hardware, we were pretty confident we could tackle them. Apart from the 64-bit support in the beginning, there were almost none. Perhaps making sure our guys spent enough time working on the game and less time playing the game, because when we had our first portable build, a lot of people in the studio got very excited and wanted to try it right away. Nintendo Switch definitely has a ‘cool factor’ for hardcore gamers.”

A new launch trailer celebrates the action RPG's release for the platform.

FromSoftware’s Dark Souls Remastered has finally hit the Switch following some delays. Handled by Virtuos, the Switch port marks the first time that a mainline Dark Souls title has come to a portable-ish platform. Check out the launch trailer below and marvel at the quality of visuals.

Originally released back in 2011, Dark Souls Remastered is an updated version of the game with improved visuals. Sadly, the Switch version doesn’t benefit from 4K resolution support or 60 FPS like the Xbox One, PS4 and PC versions. At least dedicated servers, password-protected matchmaking and the increased player count have made the leap.

Dark Souls Remastered includes the base game and the Artorias of the Abyss expansion. If you’ve never played a Souls-like game in your life, then it might be worth checking it out. Read our official review here to see if this is the remaster’s PS4 version was worthy of the original’s legacy.
