Some great deals for the game at certain outlets.

Forge is an MMO from Dark Vale games and based on our preview here it does some cool things for something that only costs $20. We also reviewed it but our author didn’t like it and pointed out some issues. You can read it over here.

The game doesn’t have a single player and has been released worldwide on all major digital distribution platforms like Steam and Green Man Gaming. So if you are interested to check it out, you can visit these stores to buy it.

There’s also a sweet deal at all major digital distribution services and also at the game’s official website, where you can get that game for the price of one.

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

It offers nothing innovative nor does it redefine anything.

Forge has been developed by a bevy of teams including Dark Valve Games, Digital Confectioners, Super Genius and Origin. With so many companies working on this game, you kind of wonder why it’s not fun.

Forge can easily be described as a Guild Wars player verusus player game rip off. The PvP is broken down into five types; Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Arena, and Relic Assault. There’s no real originality to any of these versions but you could spent more time if you keep randomly changing it up.

There are also five classes to choose from in this game. You can choose from Pathfinder, Pyromancer, Shaman, Warden and Assassin. The Pathfinder is your typical ranger. Your Pyro is your typical fire magician. Shaman is a typical dark mage. Assassin is your typical dark elf. Your Warden is your typical warrior. All these classes are just that, typical.

The tutorial shows off some interesting aspects like wall jumping like you’re the Prince of Persia, however it didn’t seem to make sense for a heavy warrior to be wall jumping. But it really doesn’t matter. The tutorial doesn’t really go over how to use your special abilities that are displayed on the bottom tool bar.

The art is pretty decent and there’s a lot of special effects that go on during your attacks. I was surprised that since everyone’s attacks use over done special effects, there wasn’t any slow down or performance hit. Unfortunately with everyone’s special attacks going off at the same time, it becomes hard to see what’s happening and if you are watching your special effects or someone else’s. It becomes a jumbled mess and sometimes death is welcomed so you can wait to respawn and not have to stare through the spamming special effects.

With the special attacks and different classes, you would think that when the matches start there would be some sort of strategy. Instead it was just a cluster fudge. The Pathfinder would certainly be more useful since they’re typically a ranged shooter, but when you get bum rushed you’re left with no choice but to run in and fight too. But it made no difference really. If you switch over to a Warden, a warrior clearly built for brawling, you just end up dead anyways.

The idea for having special abilities was a good one, but the default buttons seemed hap-hazardly mapped. Ideally the default buttons should have been mapped to F1-F10 keys, not random R, T, G,F and whatever else makes no sense.

With all the class separation and special abilities it’s disappointing that Forge really can’t get past being a hack and slash, player versus player, brawl. It’s hard to place the blame. Gamers are just going to exploit what they can, but when a game has no real structure it’s bound to fall into chaos.

And so the question I keep wondering is why it’s worth getting this game? Guild Wars is such a good game that I seriously doubt anyone playing it cares to leave that game in order to play a chaotic PvP version. And since Forge doesn’t have a campaign mode there’s no value in playing either offline or by yourself. And a campaign mode of Forge would most likely be a Guild Wars rip off anyway.

For what it’s worth there are an over abundance of games recently released that offer so much more for your money than Forge. Two games that I recently reviewed come to mind, Doom and PainKillers. With Painkillers you get a huge, good looking campaign mode. They then up the ante with a strong PvP with old and new HD maps. With Doom, you get three full blown games and some fun PvP. Sure it’s first person, unlike Forge’s third person, but it’s very similar. Both version require no skill and come down to all out brawling which don’t require and real class distinction. Forge offers leveling up per class but it gets lost in the brawling.

Forge brings PvP to the Guild Wars genre without asking anyone. It offers nothing innovative nor does it redefine anything. The class system becomes boring when the game stumbles into a brawl. The graphics are adequate and the special effects are cool, but in the middle of the brawl there’s no telling if it’s your effects or someone else’s. If you have money and time to kill I would highly suggest you spend your pennies on other games with a lot more value.

This game was reviewed on the PC.

The game is exclusive to the PC and will be releasing on December 4 for $19.99 via digital distribution.

Forge is an MMO, and a good one in that, as you can check out from our preview over here. While it was a bit unpolished during the alpha stage, still good mind you, the final version should be good if the developers have been listening to feedback.

The game is exclusive to the PC and will be releasing on December 4 for $19.99 via digital distribution. You will also receive a second copy of the game free of charge so that you can refer a friend. You can buy the game through various ways like Valve’s Steam service, Amazon.com and GamersGate, as well as directly from Dark Vale Games’ web site at www.PlayForgeWar.com.

“Several months ago, we promised the PC gaming world a unique proposition: an incredible AAA-quality multiplayer fantasy game at an amazing indie price, and that’s just what we’ve delivered,” said Tim Alvis, COO/CTO of Dark Vale Games.

“As players of some of the best multiplayer PC games ourselves, we understand that these titles are all about the community. That’s why we’re offering the best of both worlds – a great price point and a free copy that purchasers can give to their guild- or clan-mate or anyone else they would like to have fighting by their side. The more people we have playing FORGE, the more fun it will be. We truly believe that and we’re putting our money where our mouth is to prove it.”

Dark Vale Games' PVP game gets some new footage.

Dark Vale Games’ Forge, which is currently in closed beta, just got a new gameplay video courtesy community member “Pilluminati” as part of a movie-making contest for those taking part in the beta. As a prize, this winning video will be used in all the game’s media and advertising in the months to come.

So Player vs Player and random slaughtering galore. Business as usual but now more finely cut. Check out the gameplay trailer before and see if you agree.

On the other end, Dark Vale is readying for the final release of Forge, besides deciding on an official price. Touting it as one of “the best looking, best playing indie games of 2012”, they certainly have a lot to live up to, but from what we’ve seen so far, Forge should be more than up to the task. Check out the game’s official site here for more information and future updates.

It's actually fun.

It took me 20 hours to download the approx. 1.6GB preview of Forge at a friend’s house, but it was worth it since after playing the game has piqued my interest immensely. Dark Vale Games’ Forge is something that cannot be termed as a big budget title, however, it puts many such games to shame.

It’s an MMO, which is PvP based, where the action is intense and you have a lot of characters to choose from, and a lot of abilities to use.

First things first, this game looks absolutely phenomenal. Kind of like Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma but with increased visual fidelity and detail density. That is expected since it is a PC game of course, but it makes the entire thing so pleasing to look at. Presentation can make or break a game, especially for gamers who lack patience, to sit through the fluff stuff and get to the good part.

Here the visuals will actually encourage you to play more, and considering a stable netcode – which was my one fear while playing this game – Forge has a huge potential.

The action is fast paced and you need to traverse the map fast and have a good ability to sense your surroundings. The graphics are solid and it does look like a 2012 PC game, which is something that the developers should be commended for.

You can see their passion with this game. When it comes to classes and abilities, it does get a bit basic, but the main thing here is that, it’s completely balanced. Of course trying them all out would take a while but from what I’ve seen there’s no overpowered class which will completely destroy you if the person knows how to exploit it.

The classes such as Pyromancer, Warden. Assassin, Pathfinder, and Shaman each have their own unique abilities. It’s quite straightforward if you have played such games before how these classes will work. Five may seem low at this stage but the game is still in development with more to come. However, I don’t really see the big deal as these classes are more than enough and provide some exciting battles.

Not only does the environment look good but almost everything does, with the fire effects to spell effects, and even the general character design. There is a slight learning curve here but which MMO does not? I think Forge is quite accessible when you compare it to similar MMORPGs around, and that in a way, might guarantee its chances for a good userbase which is so vital for games like these.

It’s quite satisfying play something as good and simple as Forge and hopefully bugs if any should be fixed before the game is complete.

Dark Vale Games have crafted a wonderful fantasy-ish setting along with a good netcode and a game that provides good fast-paced action if you know what you’re doing. You should keep an eye on this title as this is shaping up to be something great.

Stay tuned to GB for more news and information on Forge.

The action MMO beat out several competitors to enter into the vaunted vaults of the Steam Store.

Dark Vale Games’ upcoming action MMO Forge just got even better. Not only will it be releasing worldwide on Steam, but it’s been selected via Steam Greenlight. This means that the Steam commnuity members themselves saw it worthwhile to have Forge on the Steam store. And considering the thousands of submissions, even ending up on the Top Ten list of most recently approved titles is a big deal.

said Tim Alvis, COO/CTO of Dark Vale Games, “Being selected for Steam Greenlight – and especially knowing we were in the Top Ten amongst thousands of competing titles – is further validation of the vision our dedicated team at Dark Vale Games had for creating a truly unique and competitive PC multiplayer game.

“As a small, independent developer it’s a great advantage to have the worldwide influence of a publishing system like Steam and our game is a perfect fit for the experienced and fervent PC gaming community that resides there. We can’t wait to get to launch!”

Stay tuned, because Forge is expected to be available for pre-order on Steam soon.

So wanna pre-order Forge from Dark Vale Games? You can do that now. People who pre-order Forge before USA Pacific Time will save money and also gain access to the game’s Alpha and Beta sessions.

“We received amazing feedback from PC gamers both from our private Alpha and in our PAX booth last week, however, despite these great results our crowd-sourced funding goal wasn’t achieved,” said Tim Alvis, COO/CTO of Dark Vale Games.

“As we have said all along, Forge will still release this year and will still be an amazing game but we want to make sure those fans who pre-ordered via Kickstarter can still lock in their copy at a discounted, early-adopter price.

“Each pre-order supports our independent development and helps us move towards release faster. But we’re not the only ones who benefit — by preordering Forge now, fans will pay less than they would at release and earn some great additional benefits.”

Check out the full details below:

FORGE is available now for pre-order here in the following packages (these prices and bonuses will expire at midnight, this Sunday September 16). Following midnight Sunday, pre-orders will continue, but at the full release price of $20:

Small time developer Dark Vale Games is bringing it to PAX Prime this year – and by it, we mean Forge, which it shall reveal for the first time.

The public reveal includes the 5 launch classes, including the Assassin, Shaman and Warden, along with a massive arena dubbed “Capital Siege”. Character companion abilities such as the Revenant, Fire Elemental and Dire Bear will also be showcased. And for those who couldn’t get into the closed beta due to high demand – attend PAX Prime and visit Dark Vale’s booth, and you’ll receive a free VIP pass to the beta.

As a multiplayer-only shooter, Forge allows abilities, strategy and pacing, much like PvP titles such as Planetside 2. In light of the latter, the overall scale and variety of the game should be interesting to see. Forge is also being developed using Unreal Engine 3 technology.

PAX Prime will run between August 31st to September 2nd.

FORGE plays like a third person shooter, but with the abilities, strategy and pace of MMO PvP combat. It is built with a focus on fun and accessibility, but with the attention to detail and balance of a deep, competitive game. Whether you’re new to first person shooters and MMOs, or a veteran, FORGE will be easy to pick up yet offer much to learn as you play.

In addition – DVG is kicking-off their “Kick-Finish” campaign TODAY, a Kickstarter program that will allow fans to pre-order the game and help get the game completed on-time and free from the influence of outside investors. It’s a Kick-Finish because FORGE is already well into development and nearing a closed BETA. You can win some cool Astro gear if you pledge $500.

You can check out the Kickstarter page here. Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
