The Epic Games Store was a bounty of free games throughout the holidays, offering free games like Celeste, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun and even Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. The store is currently back to giving away free games every week. However, it’s starting 2020 off with a bang by offering three free games till January 9th.

These titles include Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition and Steep. The first two games are remasters of Vigil Games’ classics offering exploration, hack and slash combat and puzzle-solving. If either game interests you, then it might be worth checking out Darksiders 3 or Darksiders Genesis.

Ubisoft’s Steep is fairly different from the company’s usual offerings. It’s an extreme sports title with activities like wingsuit flying and snowboarding. Various challenges and disciplines along with different playable characters and multiplayer offer some decent competitive action. Check out our initial review of the game here.

After accidentally, maybe-on-purpose leaking the trailer for the same, THQ Nordic has announced that Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is coming to the Nintendo Switch. It will be out on April 2nd. Check out the official launch trailer below and bask in the glory that is the Horseman War yet again.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is a remastered version of the original game that first released in 2010. It sees War battling the forces of Heaven and Hell in an effort to clear his name. The original game had actually released for Wii U in 2017, making it one of the last major titles for the console.

The remaster has been available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC since November 2016. If Darksiders: Warmastered Edition does well enough on the Switch, we may see Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition make its way to the console as well. Perhaps even Darksiders 3 somewhere down the line as well, if the stars align? Stay tuned for more information regardless.

Game publishers and developers are often on the receiving end of leaks for their projects, which can be debilitating for morale, but it doesn’t happen too often that a leak comes from a developer or publisher themselves. And yet, that is what has happened with Darksiders: Warmastered Edition for Nintendo Switch, which saw a trailer for it uploaded (and then hastily taken down) by THQ Nordic.

Thankfully, the trailer itself was reposted by Vooks (you can see it below), and it confirms what THQ Nordic was teasing some time ago—Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is coming to the Nintendo Switch, bringing a traditional Zelda experience to the console at long last. There is no release date specified in the trailer, so we don’t know when “at long last” really is, but we do know there is an “at long last”. So that’s something, I imagine.

Given that THQ Nordic released Darksiders: Warmastered Edition even for the Wii U as a retail release in 2017, I have to imagine this Switch port was a no brainer for them. Hopefully it comes out soon.

Gunfire Games’ Darksiders 3 is out later this month. However, those who pre-order the game’s Blades and Whip Edition from the Microsoft Store will have the chance to play enhanced versions of the first two games. THQ Nordic has announced that Darksiders: Warmastered Edition and Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition will receive Xbox One X enhancements.

Both games are playable immediately after pre-ordering Darksiders 3: Blades and Whip Edition. However, only Darksiders: Warmastered Edition has been enhanced to support 4K resolution. Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition will receive its enhancements later this month (and hopefully before the third game releases).

Darksiders 3 releases on November 27th and will be heading to Xbox One, PS4 and PC. It focuses on Fury, the Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse, as she journeys to kill The Seven Deadly Sins. Whips and magic will be Fury’s calling cards, though she can also use her mobility to fight enemies. Different forms can also be unlocked with their own unique abilities.

THQ Nordic has announced that Darksiders Warmastered Edition is still coming to the Nintendo Wii U. It will be out on May 23rd.

Initially thought to be cancelled – which is reasonable given the launch of the Switch and Nintendo itself dropping support for the Wii U – Darksiders Warmastered Edition is a remaster of the first game. Running at native 1080p, it released for PS4, Xbox One and PC last year.

Other improvements include post-processing effect, improved shadow quality and so on. While the other versions run at 60 frames per second, the Wii U version only runs at 30 frames per second.

Darksiders Warmastered Edition will at $19.99/£14.99 on release. The second game also received a remaster called Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition in 2015 but that’s not available on the Wii U. The first Darksiders has finally received its remastered version, namely the Warmastered Edition, on Steam, Xbox One and PS4. However, if you happen to own the original game on Steam, then you won’t have to spend any extra for the remaster.

As per THQ Nordic, owners of the first Darksiders will receive the remaster for free in their game library. If you don’t see it in your library, simply restart your Steam client and it should be updated. From there, it should be available to download.

Darksiders Warmastered Edition usually retails for $20 but it’s currently on sale right now for $4. If you decide to pick up the entire franchise, it’s available in a $10 pack that contains Darksiders Warmastered Edition, Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition and the OST for Darksiders 2. These offers will only be valid until December 2nd however.

GamingBolt spoke to Reinhard Pollice, business and product development director at THQ Nordic, about what we can expect from Darksiders: Warmastered Edition when it releases this October.

To begin with, who comes up with these over the top names for your remasters? First “DeathinitiveEdition” and now “Warmastered Edition”?

I have to confess, that’s me. Actually at first I was just messing around for fun, but then some folks really liked it and in the end I think it’s nicer than something like a standard “Definitive” etc. edition name tag. I know it’s a bit cheesy, but it’s also unique and adds a little individual touch.

Why remaster such a old title? Do you think there is enough demand for it compared to say, the Darksiders 2 remaster?

We always wanted to remaster Darksiders, but Darksiders 2 was more straightforward to do and had more potential for wide ranges of fixes and improvements including gameplay reworks, so we did it first.. We firmly believe that great games like Darksiders will always have an audience and therefore we want to make it available to as many people as possible which means the more platforms the game is on the more people it can reach.

What kind of updates have you done to the game’s engine? What kind of improvements can we expect in terms of image and shadow quality?

So actually the whole backend renderer was replaced. We have done a lot of reworks to the shadow quality by increasing the resolution by 4 times and using different methods to make it look better. We have also added some nice post processing effects like chromatic aberration, sharpen and FXAA but we know that they are a matter of taste so users can switch them off – even on the console versions. Overall we increased all texture resolutions by 4 or at least 2 times.

Is the game going to run at 1080p and 60fps on both the PS4 and Xbox One?

That’s our goal. We are still working hard to optimize it to the max.

How different is the PC version going to be compared to PS4 and Xbox One? Are you adding more graphical settings to the PC version?

It will have some more options but pretty basic stuff – other than that it’s the same.

Are you fixing any bugs or modifying things in the remaster?

We are including the Harvester (which was a GameStop pre-order exclusive scythe) and fixing bugs we encounter but other than that we aren’t modifying things.

I am sure you must have heard about the new upgradeable consoles, As developers, do you prefer the more conservative approach for an upgrade that Sony have targeted with the Neo, or do you think Microsoft’s more radical jump ahead with the Scorpio is more promising?

This is a pretty new situation for all developers so I think we all have to wait for the consumer’s feedback first. We are okay with both approaches as long as there aren’t any rules or artificial barriers that block real steps forward when creating games.

It’s exciting times ahead- with the launch of three new VR platforms, the Neo, the Scorpio, and the NX in the future, is this effectively, at least from a development pipeline perspective, a new generation?

VR platforms are definitely a new generation but right now they aren’t replacing anything just broadening it and bringing some exciting new possibilities. Neo, Scorpio or the NX seem to be more traditional gaming consoles with a lot of power which is great as working on consoles always meant strict limitations.

As developers, what are your thoughts on being given two more SKUs to develop for, suddenly? Especially given that the promise of development on a console is a standard spec to always target through a generation?

You mean for Scorpio and Neo? I think Sony and Microsoft will need to ensure that they won’t have completely new SKUs but rather subsets where a few variables are different. Until they announce exact details I can’t really say much about this.

What is happening with Darksiders 3? You do realize that there is a lot of demand for it, right?

It’s awesome to have such an amazing franchise that so many people(including myself) are looking forward to. We really appreciate our fans’ enthusiasm about this IP, but at the moment there is nothing to talk about here.

Nordic Games has officially revealed Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, a remastered version of the first Darksiders for Xbox One, PS4, PC and Wii U.

Like Darksiders 2: Deathnitive Edition, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition will sport a number of graphical improvements including native 1080p resolution, improvements in rendering, post processing effects, improved shadow rendering, 60 FPS gameplay (with the Wii U version running at 30 FPS) and texture resolutions doubled across the board.

The remaster hasn’t been dated but it is “coming soon” according to Nordic so it can’t be that far off. Darksiders focuses on War as he struggles with the Apocalypse (and the forces manipulating him from behind the scenes). Described as fairly derivative, Darksiders was still very well received for its time.

Will the Warmastered Edition revitalize interest in the franchise, especially with Darksiders 3 rumoured to be in development? We’ll have to wait and find out but in the meantime, let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
