Plus a really cool 10th anniversary trailer.

Capcom’s Dead Rising series remasters – remasters for the first Dead Rising game, as well as Dead Rising 2 and Off The Record, will be launching on September 13 on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. And the game will be running at 1080p and 60fps, to boot.

The remasters will also come with all the DLC costumes that were released for the games originally- so when you buy them, you get the complete and hopefully definitive experience for all of them.

You can check out a new, celebratory trailer commemorating the tenth anniversary for the franchise, as well as advertising the upcoming remasters of each of the three games. The trailer should also get you into the mood for more Dead Rising, which is just as well, with Dead Rising 4 launching this December for the Xbox One and for Windows 10 PCs. Ports of the game for non Windows 10 PCs as well as for the PlayStation 4 will be coming later.

Instead, they have been contracted to external studios.

The just announced remasters of Dead Rising and Dead Rising 2 for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 won’t be developed internally at Capcom- instead, it sounds like the company has outsourced development of these games to external studios.

The original Dead Rising will be launching for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 courtesy of Polish studio QLOC, who also developed the PS4 and Xbox One versions of DmC: Devil May Cry, Capcom’s infamous Devil May Cry reboot. Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 2: Off The Record, meanwhile, will be handled by Mercenary Technology.

This does make sense, if you think about it- series custodian Capcom Vancouver are currently hard at work, presumably, on Dead Rising 4, which has been announced for release later this year on Xbox One and Windows 10. Meanwhile, you can check out new screenshots for both the remasters below.

Meanwhile, the first game will arrive on PC.

After a list of Trophies emerged for Dead Rising yesterday, prompting speculation of the game re-releasing for PS4, Capcom revealed to Eurogamer that it was indeed bringing the first game to Sony’s console. But that’s not all.

Dead Rising will also be heading to PC and Xbox One while Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 2: Off The Record (which featured the return of Frank West) release on Xbox One and PS4. Capcom noted that, “We will have more news to share soon.”

“More news” may be details on whether these games are simple ports with improved resolutions and frame rates or remasters with extensive reworking on textures and character models. Maybe something in between?

Dead Rising 4 will be out this year as well for Xbox One and Windows 10, releasing during the Holiday season and seeing West as a protagonist after many years. Thoughts on all this Dead Rising? Let us know in the comments below.

When Dead Rising 2 was released last year there were two glaring omissions that were bemoaned by fans: the original protagonist Frank West was nowhere to be seen and a sandbox mode was also missing. Thankfully, good old Capcom has rectified this and the result is Dead Rising 2: Off The Record (OTR).

Frank’s back. He’s got his camera and he isn’t afraid to use it!

Just to clear this up, OTR is effectively Dead Rising 2 with a few tweaks here and there. Little has changed: the storyline is almost identical and the graphics are largely untouched – except for some shiny new cut scenes and notably, a new amusement park area… but that’s not to say there isn’t some fresh content in this release. With new psychopaths, challenges, and inventive weapons that can be spliced together, there’s plenty to keep you occupied should you decide to buy.

Dead Rising 2 saw former Motocross champ Chuck Greene replace photojournalist and fan favourite, Frank West, and while Chuck brought with him a new plot, some nous with modifying weapons and his annoyingly sickly daughter Katey, Frank was sorely missed. His rugged, no-fear, smart-ass attitude really added to the Willamette mall invasion of the first game and it just didn’t feel right without him. The fact that Frank would do pretty much anything to get his scoop was somewhat endearing; here was a guy with guile and balls, snapping away with his trusty camera in the face of adversity. The original game achieved exactly what was captured all those years earlier by Romero in his classic Dawn of the Dead movie – a load of normal folk who had the run of a huge shopping mall and were fighting for their lives.

Thankfully, Frank’s back and OTR’s Fortune City is all the better for it. He’s let himself go a bit though and is a little wider around the waist. After living the high life following his exploits at that infamous mall, he’s decided to mosey on down to Nevada to relaunch himself by appearing in a leotard on TV show Terror Is Reality. Rather than Chuck’s bike riding, chainsaw-wielding opening, Frank’s TV segment sees him making use of a giant meat grinder and churning up any zombies that shuffle into his path. After taking the spoils and slipping into something more comfortable, he stumbles upon a conspiracy and all hell breaks lose…

The all-new Uranus Zone is a nice addition

With zombies everywhere, Frank must wait for three days until the military arrive to help out. It’s no mean feat, particularly as Zombrex supplies are limited and Frank is infected! With trusty camera in hand, he’s ready to rack up those all important Prestige Points with snaps of horror, drama, erotica and brutality – all of which level up his abilities and make this survival more likely. Snapping a PP symbol that appears above the head of a survivor or zombie results in a hefty bonus so keep your eyes peeled.

Fortune City is much the same as it was, with a few enhancements including the theme park area, Uranus Zone, which offers a few nice attractions and cool opportunities to wipe out the undead horde.

As before, you can get Frank dressing up in women’s clothing, escape the undead on a child’s bicycle and explode, slash, decapitate and skewer to your heart’s content. The return of the camera works well and allows levelling up a little more quickly between missions. What’s more, Stacey’s phone calls won’t disturb your play as much as Otis’ in the first game as Frank has acquired a nice new Bluetooth headset, which is far more sensible when you’re trying to swing a nail-modifed baseball bat.

Checkpoints and save points (rest rooms) are plentiful and prevent un-necessary and slightly irritating repetition should you die. And it’s more than likely that you’ll be doing that quite often. Weapons still degrade quickly but there are plenty of items about that can be grabbed, bought or modified.

Sandbox mode means no-holds-barred zombie slaying

Should you tire of the story mode, this time us lucky gamers can dispense with that that pesky timer and instead jump headfirst into the all-new Sandbox mode either alone or with a friend. With no clock counting down but complete freedom, Capcom has remedied the biggest gripe of all. And it’s brilliant fun. Rather than missions, challenges are hidden about the map and can be activated, completed and retried time and time again with leaderboards encouraging you to improve your scores.

So the question remains, is it worth buying? There’s no denying it’s a great game and there are some great ideas. It’s not a full priced release, which is a bonus – so for those of you yet to experience Dead Rising 2, then the unequivocal answer is yes. For fans of the series and owners of the previous games, including the DLC where Frank makes an appearance anyhow, there is perhaps less incentive to part with your cash.

Sandbox mode is great but without a rigid mission structure, there’s little to keep you playing. By the time you’ve killed your 1000th zombie and completed the early challenges, you feel like you’ve seen pretty much everything and know what to expect.

Frank is a welcome addition to the main campaign and it works all the better for his presence but there’s no escaping the fact that the storyline is largely unchanged. If you’ve played and completed last year’s sequel, there’s little that’s fresh here. For owners of Dead Rising 2, you’ve seen most of it before but if you’re new to the series, then this is a worthwhile purchase.

This game was reviewed on the Xbox 360.

Capcom today announced that Dead Rising 2: Off The Record is now available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in North America. A reinterpretation of the Fortune City Outbreak depicted in Dead Rising2, Dead Rising 2: Off The Recordre tells the events from the perspective of the original Dead Rising hero, Frank West. Introducing the Uranus Zone Amusement Park, Sandbox Mode, and the return of Frank’s camera, Dead Rising 2: Off The Record has a suggested retail price of $39.99.

Here’s some info on the game as given by the devs:

Despite a quick rise to fame after the Willamette outbreak in the original Dead Rising, Frank West is down on his luck and looking to reclaim his celebrity by competing in the zombie slaying game show “Terror is Reality.” After discovering a nefarious plan that releases zombies into Fortune City, Frank is on the scene to get the scoop and make a name for himself once again. Frank must make his way through the casinos, shops and eateries of Fortune City including the Uranus Zone, a new sci-fi themed Amusement Park with its own unique mini-games and ‘death trap’ rides.

New items littered throughout the environment help Frank fight his way through the crowds of zombies. Players can use one of the numerous maintenance rooms to combine the everyday items into weapons of mass zombie destruction. In addition to those taken from Dead Rising 2, combo weapons from Dead Rising 2: Case West and all-new ones are introduced to help kill zombies in even more humorous ways. Tennis ball launchers and motor oil create flaming turrets, rubber alien masks and gems create a mask that shoots lasers, and Uranus Zone Escape Pods combined with fire extinguishers create Cryopods which when placed on a zombie hover in the air freezing zombies underneath. More than 10 new combo weapons have been added to the already robust list of unique and deadly weapons.

For the first time in the Dead Rising franchise, a new sandbox mode is available in Dead Rising 2: Off The Record, allowing players to explore Fortune City without the pressure of clock. Filled with unique and grisly challenges, Sandbox Mode helps players earn additional Prestige Points and cash for use in pawn shops and vending machines. Sandbox mode is available from the beginning of the game and can be played in both single-player and co-op modes.

Frank West never travels without his camera and Dead Rising 2: Off The Record is no exception. The camera returns allowing players to photograph the bizarre events happening in Fortune City and break the story of what’s happening from the inside. In addition to camera-based missions and challenges, players increase their Prestige Points by snapping pictures that fall into the categories of Brutality, Erotica, Horror, Drama and Outtake. Stickers placed throughout Fortune City also hint at objects and scenes that will offer additional Prestige Points and unlock new combo weapons when photographed.

Developed by Capcom Vancouver, Dead Rising 2: Off The Record has been enhanced to provide a more gratifying Dead Rising experience than ever before. Improvements include decreased loading times when travelling between environments and more frequent checkpoints placed at casino entrances. Frank West’s unique and original animations from Dead Risinghave been incorporated to give him the personality and swagger that fans have come to expect from the character.
