However, Embracer Group will retain ownership of Aspyr Media, Tripwire Interactive, Tuxedo Labs, 34 Big Things, and more.

It’s been confirmed that Saber Interactive is splitting from parent company Embracer Group in a deal worth $247 million, and the former will be taking a number of projects and studios that were previously under Embracer’s ownership with it.

For starters, a number of studios that were operating under the Saber Interactive label will be part of Embracer Group’s divestment. That will include 3D Realms, Slipgate Ironworks, New World Interactive, Nimble Giant, Sandbox Strategies, Mad Head Games, Fractured Byte, and Digic. In total, Embracer says its divested assets include 38 ongoing game projects, as well as “certain proprietary engine technology and game tools relating to the divested companies.”

However, a number of studios that were previously operating under Saber are not being divested, and will continue to be owned by Embracer Group. This includes Tuxedo Labs (as well as the ongoing development of Teardown), Demiurge Studios, Beamdog, 34 Big Things, Tripwire Interactive, Snapshot Games, Shiver Entertainment, and Aspyr Media.

Embracer is also retaining control of ownership of 14 projects that were previously under Saber Interactive’s oversight, including two that are being worked on as joint projects with Saber itself.

These 14 projects include 4A Games’ next AAA project (which is presumably the next Metro game), a “previously announced AAA game based on a major license”, an unannounced AAA title that’s currently in the concept stage of production, a new AAA multiplayer shooter based on an IP owned by Embracer, a new AA game based on an Asmodee-owned IP, a new AA game by 34 Big Things based on an IP owned by Embracer, and the entire back catalog and all future upcoming projects by Aspyr Media, Tripwire Interactive (including Killing Floor 3), and Zen Studios.

It’s also been confirmed that Embracer and Saber’s deal includes an option for the latter to acquire Zen Studios and Metro developer 4A Games, though licensing and publishing rights for all existing and future Metro titles will be retained by Embracer Group’s PLAION.

Reports had previously indicated that development of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake would continue at Saber Interactive following the deal’s completion, though that has yet to be officially confirmed.

Microsoft’s Games With Gold program for Xbox Live Gold subscribers is still going strong and continues to dole out old Xbox 360 games for free. Major Nelson has announced that December’s Games With Gold will include Epic’s Gears of War (yes, the first one) from December 1st to December 15th and Demiurge Studios’ multiplayer Shoot Many Robots from December 16th to 31st.

Gears of War helped kickstart the entire franchise, which has since gone to be extremely successful for both Epic and Microsoft. Since Gears of War 2, the series has been exclusive to the Xbox 360 (the first game also released on PC) with the latest title in the series being Gears of War: Judgment developed by People Can Fly.

Meanwhile, Shoot Many Robots released in 2012 for Xbox Live Arcade and is also available for Android and PSN. As a shooter, it involved gunning down many robots. That’s about the gist of it.

Looking forward to one or both of these games in December?

Looking Glass Studios is arguably one of the most overlooked and influential developers of the century, having developed excellent titles such as System Shock, Thief, Ultima Underworld and Jane’s Attack Squadron. After closing down tragically, its members were spread out across the industry.

Now we know the current situation of founder Paul Neurath, who recently joined indie dev Demiurge Studios in Boston as part of its advisory board.

“I’m pleased to join Demiurge’s advisory board. They’re a creative studio with great range – just like Looking Glass and Floodgate. I look forward to helping steer their future games.” Neurath’s last venture was Floodgate Entertainment, which was sold to Zynga in 2011.

Also joining Demiurge is Three Rings Design founder Daniel James, also on the advisory board, who created Puzzle Pirates. Demiurge Studios’ board member Mike Dornbrook stated that, “Paul and Daniel are trailblazers in free to play, mobile, and online game design. They understand at the deepest levels how games work – and more than that, their projects have shaped the way we think about games.”

On track for it's February 2013 release.

Fans of Aliens Colonial Marines should be excited over this. The game has just gone gold. Gearbox Software and Sega have announced that the game is on track for it’s February release date.

“Today, we’re proud to announce that we hit every one of those targets, with the game’s gold status indicating that all parties have examined the release candidate and signed off on the code as final and suitable for manufacturing, after which the game will be shipped to retail and propped to digital networks in time for launch on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 come February 12, 2013,” they stated on GearBox Software’s website.

Personally, I am not sure how this game will turn out to be. But regardless, stay tuned for our full review.

In related news, EuroGamer reports that Aliens Colonial Marines will be coming to the Wii U. It could get released at any time till the end of March. Given how strong 3rd party support has been for the Wii U, it’s no surprise that Aliens Colonial Marines is making a new home there. But how it will utilize Wii U’s features remains to be seen. The Wii U version will not be developed by Gearbox but by Demiurge Studios.

For more details on the game check out our hub page over here. Stay tuned for more news and updates.
