Both Hotline Miami and Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number can be bought on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S separately, or as a bundle.

Soon after indications that Hotline Miami and its sequel, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, would be making their way on to the PS5, both titles are out now on the console, as well as the Xbox Series X/S.

Both Hotline Miami and Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number can be bought individually, priced at $9.99 and $14.99 respectively, or together as a bundle priced at $19.99 in total.

The Hotline Miami games—especially the first one—have been subjected to widespread critical acclaim. Back when the title came out in 2013, it was praised for its psychedelic visuals, fast-paced gameplay, and bass-thumping soundtrack.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number was released in 2015, and featured quite a bit more content over its predecessor, including additional weapons and abilities used through animal masks.

The last time we got to talk about Hotline Miami was back in 2019, when the game, along with its sequel, were released on the Nintendo Switch.

Trophies for PS5 versions of the two Hotline Miami titles have emerged online, potentially hinting at an upcoming port.

Indie darling duology Hotline Miami seems to be gearing up for a PS5 port. The widely acclaimed top-down shooters are, of course, already playable on current-gen machines via backward compatibility, though it seems developer Dennaton Games and publisher Devolver Digital are preparing native releases as well.

As spotted by Gematsu on Twitter, Trophies of PS5 version of Hotline Miami and Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number have emerged on Exophase, indicating that an announcement and release could be close for current-gen ports for the two titles. Presumably, Xbox Series X/S will also be getting the ports, and presumably, they will arrive in the form of Hotline Miami Collection, which originally launched for the Nintendo Switch in 2019, and for Xbox One the following year.

Given the widespread love and adoration the Hotline Miami games continue to enjoy, over a decade on from the series’ inception, this would surely be exciting news for a great many people. How long it’ll be before an official announcement is made – assuming the two titles are indeed getting current-gen ports – remains to be seen.

Dennaton Games' hit action series is now available on the eShop.

Dennaton Games’ Hotline Miami 1 and 2 are now available for the Nintendo Switch as Hotline Miami Collection. You can purchase and download the collection from the eShop now. Check out the reveal trailer below which contains an adequate amount of synthwave and electronic music. Oh, and violence. Lots of violence.

Hotline Miami introduced the series’ brand of ultraviolent, overhead gameplay in 2012. While fairly difficult, the title was also praised for its presentation, soundtrack and mind-bending story. It also birthed many “Do you like hurting people?” questions at developer panels. Hotline Miami is also available for PC, PS3, PS Vita, PS4 and Android.

Its follow-up, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, released in 2015 and included much more content. This meant more songs, more characters, more masks and more ways to murder enemies. Though not nearly as acclaimed as the original, it’s still a great follow-up for fans. You can pick up the sequel on PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita and Android along with the recent Switch release.

Do you still like hurting other people?

Dennaton Games took the world by storm when it released the first Hotline Miami. As if the ultraviolence wasn’t enough, the 80’s style soundtrack and atmosphere – with shades of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive and a heady dose of existentialist moral pondering – cemented it in our troubled minds and souls. Hotline Miami seemingly couldn’t be topped. Then, a sequel was announced.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number takes place after the murders committed by Jacket under the direction of 50 Blessings in the first game. The original saw Jacket destroying various outlets of the Russian mob at the insistence of mysterious phone calls; the game itself tore through its confines and mocked players on their unquestioning of wanton murder. Wrong Number doesn’t focus on a single protagonist. Suffice to say, Wrong Number doesn’t focus on a single timeline or plane of existence either and while it doesn’t break the fourth wall as often, it still messes with your perceptions of reality throughout.

"And honestly, if you thought Hotline Miami was violent, then Wrong Number tops it. It's amazing how despite being de-sensitized to the violence of the first game that the sequel could still overwhelm one with its brutality."

You’ll take control of Manny Pado, The Detective who is investigating the various murders taking place throughout; Evan The Writer who is friends with Manny and is a journalist trying to figure out the organization behind Jacket; The Pig Butcher Martin Brown, who plays Jacket in a fictional film based on his exploits; and The Fans, a gang that emulates Jacket and goes about committing murders in the name of justice. There are many others and Hotline Miami 2 constantly switches back and forth between characters.

One minute you’ll be controlling Tony and trying to rescue a seemingly troubled teen from an apartment full of low lives. The next you’re controlling Jake, a man who receives calls from 50 Blessings and unwittingly follows their instructions. At times, especially when playing as Martin, you’ll find real life and cinema blurring. Is Martin’s role in Midnight Animal his actual existence? Is he actually just a murderous psychopath living vicariously through the Pig Butcher? For that matter, what drives the likes of Alex or Tony or Ash or Corey who look for any excuse to commit murderous atrocities? The story jumps back and forth between the two games but keeps the same blood-drenched insanity. It all becomes a bit exhausting after a while, especially with all the violence, but you’ll find yourself unable to pull away.

And honestly, if you thought Hotline Miami was violent, then Wrong Number tops it. It’s amazing how despite being de-sensitized to the violence of the first game Wrong Number that the sequel could still overwhelm one with its brutality. Skulls, complete with spinal cords, can be ripped out. Chainsaws can be used to disembowel victims. Entire floors are painted with the blood of one’s enemies. These new, murderous avenues open up fresh gameplay mechanics as well. Ash and Alex can be controlled simultaneously, with the former gunning down enemies from a distance while the latter employs the chainsaw. Mark can dual wield SMGs in combat, making it much harder for enemies to flank him. Evan The Writer takes a non-violent approach, unloading any weapons he picks up in combat and only injuring enemies with attacks (though lethal finishers can be performed as well, which can be built up to increase his murderous drive).

"Despite the new ways players can kill their targets, Hotline Miami 2 is pretty much the original in terms of its gameplay. You have to clear floors in order to progress and a single mistake will cost you."

Dennaton has maintained the series’ unforgiving difficulty as well. You’ll be constantly outnumbered and have to employ a combination of knock-downs, weapon throws, melee attacks and stealth to best your foes. You’ll still reload the game several times in order to clear a single floor and frustration can mount as you down every single enemy only to die from a knife to the throat or a single dog. There are a few new enemy types, with dogs that will rush you upon sight and various police officers with their own special abilities (such as the dual wielding, special forces type who must be brutally executed). For the most part, you’ll be killing many of the same archetypes as before.

Despite the new ways players can kill their targets, Hotline Miami 2 is pretty much like the original in terms of its gameplay. You have to clear floors in order to progress and a single mistake will cost you. You can play somewhat sneaky but you’ll have to get your hands dirty eventually. This approach of killing everything plays into both the classic console games of yore and the game’s story and atmosphere but a bit more variety in mission structure would have been nice. That being said, there are multiple ways one can go about slaughtering the opposition and some degree of randomness in enemy weapons and placement goes a long way. Even as you attempt another run, you’ll rarely feel like the same plan is running twice.

With the amazing soundtrack seen in Hotline Miami, courtesy indie artist Moon, there’s more than a little expectation as to how the sequel will fare. The sensation of newness which gave the first game so much raw energy and violence is somewhat diminished but the music still capably sets the tone throughout. Jasper Byrne’s Voyager in particular will stay with you long after you’ve switched off, and some of the other tracks – Perturbator’s Sexualizer, for instance – will pulsate through your bloody senses.

"Any one who enjoyed the original should venture back to Miami - there's still plenty of stylish, sick killing to be had."

Some technical glitches rear their ugly head from time to time. Enemies may become stuck on doors and enter an odd state where they’re clearly in between the frame but on the opposite side. It can be a little annoying during twitch moments, especially in cases where enemies rotate seemingly endlessly against the open doors. It’s even funnier when it happens to dogs.

The enemy AI may also rustle a few jammies as they’ll be aware of you even if you’re all the way down the hall. Sneaking up on one is impossible – you’ll have to rush one shortly after rounding the corner. This difficulty, along with the ensuing violence and mayhem, may turn off most players. Conversely, enemies can be incredibly dumb, failing to notice the piling bodies of their comrades or gunshots that miss them by inches.

However, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number knows what fans want and gives them more. More ways to dismember enemies, more unique challenges, new masks with different abilities, new characters who are mostly psychotic even as they come across as relatively calm, new levels and a brand new storyline that calls back to the original in several ways. Those hankering to try out the series for the first time will spew much angry verbiage at the difficulty. Some veterans who played the original to death may not find enough fresh gameplay for their liking. However, any one who enjoyed the original should venture back to Miami – there’s still plenty of stylish, sick killing to be had.

Dennaton’s Hotline Miami is known for its for its extreme violence and explicit subject matter but the sequel Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number takes it to a whole new level. This has resulted in the game being banned in Australia, failing to meet even an R18+ rating.

The Classification Board noted that, “The computer game is classified RC in accordance with the National Classification Code, Computer Games Table, 1. (a) as computer games that ‘depict, express or otherwise deal with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults to the extent that they should not be classified.’”

The exact reason for the refusal? Sexual violence, according to a report obtained by Kotaku Australia. You can read the details there but discretion is advised.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is out in Q1 2015 for PS4, PS3, PS Vita, Linux, Mac and PC. Looking forward to it? Let us know in the comments.

Dennaton Games’ Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, the sequel to the indie dev’s ultra-violent over the top action title, is yet to receive a fixed release date for its various platforms.
Dennaton is working on a franchise "totally different" from Hotline Miami.

Dennaton Games’ Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is one of our most sought after games, indie or otherwise, and we’re looking forward to further expanding on the universe’s definition of ultraviolence. Gamereactor spoke to graphics artist Dennis Wedin about the game and found out that aside from the sequel, the indie developer is working on a brand new franchise.

Regarding Wrong Number, Wedin said, “A lot of the characters and the story elements and stuff like that, was already planned out when we did the first game. Just me and Jonatan expanding on the story for us. So we always felt that if the first game works, people buy it, we could do a sequel that we wanted to make.

“It’s more like us just fleshing out the story, because the story’s very vague, but we have a lot of details and a lot of thoughts to how we make it.”

There are plans for other stuff when Hotline Miami was finished. “We have a whole new franchise. It’s going to be totally different, but when you see it, you’ll know it’s us.”

Looking forward to it or Hotline Miami 2? Let us know below.

Everything you need to know about Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is an upcoming 2D action video game played from an over the top-down perspective that is currently in development by Dennaton Games (the developers behind the original Hotline Miami) and set to be published by Devolver Digital (the publishers behind Serious Sam Double D and Shadow Warrior), that will serve as a direct sequel to the critically acclaimed Hotline Miami.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number (which is running on the proprietary engine, GameMaker) will be released on Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, it is expected to launch some time during the third quarter of 2014.

There are no plans of an Xbox One version yet,

Development

Not much is known about the ongoing development cycle of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number other than that it has been in development since the release of critically acclaimed reception of Hotline Miami and that it will be running on multiple platforms and make use of the GameMaker proprietary engine.

Story

The story of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is set both before and after the affairs of the first game, but with a particular focus on the events that take place after. Due to the original game having multiple endings, the “Jacket’s Interpretation Ending” is canonical, and sets up the scene for Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. The game sees a slasher style film which has been built upon by the events that unfolded in the final portions of the canonical ending.

The film sees jacket being replaced by the horrible serial killer, “Butcher”. The idea being that the games stages are in fact actually fictitious scenes because at the end of each stage the “victims” turn out to be nought but actors when they stand back up when recording is done.

The fans of the story view Jacket as a vigilante and not as a murderer, which is the popular opinion. These fans are five ordinary people who keep track over the calls that Jacket would receive from a mysterious and unknown caller. The fans resort to killing random thugs so that the mysterious caller can emerge from hiding.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number remains largely unchanged from the first entry into the series. However the developers have implemented a few new features like the addition of new enemy types hence moving away from the special foes would be stage specific. The new enemies include this includes bat wielding bikers and fat men with shotguns.

These new enemy types increase the difficulty significantly given their individual abilities (for example the bikers can throw their bats) and because of this the game has been given a difficulty menu which adds three difficulties. Upon completing a stage with a C+ ranking or higher, the player will be awarded with Hard Mode which makes the gameplay even more challenging.

Characters

Butcher is the actor who will be portraying Jacket in the upcoming movie, Midnight Animal. In the film Butcher depicts Jacket as being a cold blooded serial killer..

The Fans – The Fans are a group of five ordinary people who have become obsessed with the idea of masked vigilantes. They plan the return of the mysterious caller that directed Jacket to kill the thugs. They are doing this because Jacket killed the Russian Mafia leaving them with nothing but low level thugs to kill, which is against their ego.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.
