The HD port will cost $19.99 and supports an array of language options.

When Capcom announced that Devil May Cry was coming to the Nintendo Switch, we thought this meant the entire Devil May Cry HD Collection. But no, it’s actually just the first game, which itself is from the collection. It will be releasing on June 25th in the West and June 27th in Japan.

Costing $19.99 on the Nintendo eShop, Devil May Cry will support a number of language options like English, Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Chinese. The game introduces everyone’s favourite demon-slaying hero Dante, who must investigate the return of the demon emperor Mundus.

Despite the fixed camera angles a la Resident Evil, Devil May Cry garnered acclaim for its combat and combo system. There are currently no plans to bring the second and third game to Switch, sadly. You can check out our review of Devil May Cry HD Collection here – it’s available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Or you can read our review for Devil May Cry 5, the latest chapter in the saga that’s currently also available on those same platforms.

It's one odd decision by Capcom.

Devil May Cry is finally coming to a Nintendo system, as we reported on earlier, when the original game will release some time this summer. While on one hand it’s great to see the storied franchise finally get there, how it’s done so is just rather bizarre. It was an announcement that the first game, and only the first game, would be coming. This is despite there being an HD Collection that includes remasters of the first three titles. It led some to speculate on what the deal was, and if maybe that meant that this release would be a new remaster, since the version in HD Collection has several issues. As it turns out, no- it really is just the first game taken from that collection.

Via USGamer, Capcom confirmed that this release is taken from the HD Collection. Not only that, they also said that as of now they have no plans to release either of the other two games in that collection, Devil May Cry 2 and 3, on the Switch. It’s a bit of a baffling decision, especially considering the collection has been ported to current systems and PC since its initial 2012 release for PS3/Xbox 360.

Either way, the series will come to Nintendo for the first time with the Switch release of Devil May Cry some time this summer. You can check out how high the franchise is flying in the meantime.

Capcom has silently released a new update, update 1.01, for the recently released Devil May Cry HD Collection on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. So far, so good, right? But stay with me here.

The new update comes in at a whopping 2.6GB, which means it’s fairly massive—you’d expect that this might mean that this update helps address the plethora of issues the remaster has, which has netted it so much criticism and bad reviews all around, am I right?

Well… according to the official patch notes, here’s what it does: Bug fixes and simplified Chinese implementation. Yep, that’s all the patch notes say it does, at least on the PS4. Why this needed 2.6GB, I do not know—on the other hand, there is the possibility that it is more substantial than the patch notes imply, and we just don’t know it yet.

Or it’s just Capcom being Capcom.

No, your eyes don’t deceive you… it’s yet another collection of classic titles repackaged with an HD stamp on the box. Fret not though, this one is devilishly good…

The Devil May Cry series has been lauded by critics since its debut in 2001 and now the first three games are bundled together in this budget-priced compilation. Yeah, you heard that right; Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, and Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening Special Edition on a solitary disc for both the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Dante is back… but with a slight graphical overhaul

For little more than half the cost of a regular game, this is the perfect opportunity to experience one of the best ever series from the Capcom stable – a story of good versus evil, or floppy-haired heroes versus huge ravenous beasties.

For those of you who have lived in a cave for the past decade or so, the plot goes like this… Devil May Cry tells the tale of half-demon Dante, born to a human mother and a devil father, as he tries to fulfil his destiny and save humanity from evil. Oh, and he looks kind of cool and bears some pretty nice guns and a big blade to fend off bad guys. As you’d expect, it’s all completely over the top and has a very Japanese feel to it – but that’s what made it so great and garnered a legion of die hard fans.

A couple of years after the original emerged and Dante returned with Devil May Cry 2 (2003), only this time he’s joined by Lucia who you also can choose to control, should you so desire. You can still pull off some ludicrously high jumps, shoot your guns in mid air and go hunting for those colourful orbs to power up and progress.

The three games will keep you glued to the screen for hours

Many argue that the third game, Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening Special Edition, was the best title to date. It brought with it some improved graphics and introduced Dante’s twin brother, Vergil. This edition also includes the Bloody Palace and Turbo modes.

They have all stood the test of time surprisingly well. Visually, the first and second games now look a little dated despite being retouched and upgraded with HD goodness. But that doesn’t detract from the core gameplay, which is still thoroughly absorbing and set the foundations for the long-running series.

The combat still feels sublime, the gothic feel of the games remains and the weapons and moves are suitably stylish. Oh, and the tunes that kick in throughout Dante’s adventures are still superb.

Besides the addition of the HD graphics and improved textures, there’s bonus content thrown in too (artwork and some soundtracks) and support for those all important Trophies and achievements. Otherwise, the games remain the same as before. For some reason, however, the menu screens stick out like a sore thumb from the rest of the package – they’re low-res affairs that seem to have been forgotten about when the rest of the game was being stretched for widescreen.

This should keep you going until the next game in the series appears

But just like our recent Jak and Daxter review, this HD collection is a worthy addition to your collection. Of the three games, it’s generally accepted that Devil May Cry 2 is the weakest – but as a whole, each game has plenty to keep you playing. And for such a small outlay, you really shouldn’t delay running down to your local store to grab a copy. It’s just a shame they couldn’t cram the fourth game in the box too. If nothing else, the HD collection will whet your appetite for the upcoming release of the next Devil May Cry game!

This game was reviewed on the Xbox 360

Devil May Cry HD Collection is now available at retail for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Devil May Cry HD Collection includes the first three original Devil May Cry titles: Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, and Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening Special Edition .

Debuting in 2001, Devil May Cry immediately redefined the action genre, achieving a metacritic of 94 . The title captured gamers’ hearts through its stylish, over-the-top action and bad boy anti-hero Dante. Son to a human mother and a devil father named Sparda, the half-demon Dante uses his innate abilities and the powers of ancient demons to fight a one-man war against the forces of darkness and save humanity from damnation.

The follow up to Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2 centers on Dante and his new devilishly agile partner Lucia in their fight to defeat a horde of evil led by a man hell-bent on achieving supreme power. Devil May Cry 2 released in 2003 and was praised for its variety of environments, Lucia as an additional playable character and updated control scheme.

Released in 2006, Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening Special Edition is the definitive edition of Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, featuring a number of enhancements, including the opportunity to play as Dante’s twin brother, Vergil, as well as the addition of Bloody Palace Mode and Turbo Mode.

We are currently reviewing the game, so stay tuned with us.

Looks like an HD Collection including Devil May Cry 1, 2 and 3 is on its way, because ESRB has rated it on both, the PS3 and the 360. And with the series’ 10 year anniversary coming up, this might very likely turn out to be solid, not just a rumour. Also, Capcom might be looking to create some hype around the brand right now, with the reboot coming in next year.

Rumours have been circulating about an Anniversary Collection to be released in November for sometime. The release date, as of now, however, is given as TBA.

We expect this collection will be confirmed at TGS, in time for the franchise’s ten year anniversary.
