While most games don't bother caring all too much about violence, these games actually punish those who go this route in rather creative ways.

There’s a lot of killing and stabbing involved in video games. From shooters to RPGs to hack-and-slashers, violence seems to be a recurring theme of the medium, and very few games actually put in the thought to punish or reward players for killing excessively. Then there are games that do put in the effort to punish you for committing virtual crimes, and here are the ones that do so most creatively.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Kojima’s swansong Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is a game that actually uses its open-world setting to great effect. Its setting of Afghanistan houses a complex web of interconnecting systems that create a highly dynamic gameplay loop – requiring players to alter strategies on the fly. It’s also filled with a ton of neat little details to signify the outcome of your killings. If you get sloppy and do a lot of killing in your mission, your Demon Points increase which causes the Horn on Venom Snake to grow along with blood smears on his face. After a certain point, the horn will grow out completely and you turn into Demon Snake.

A new World Seed based on The Constant, Deerclops and more come to Terraria, while Eye of Cthulhu and skins come to Don't Starve.

The eagerly awaited collaboration between Re-Logic’s Terraria and Klei Entertainment’s Don’t Starve is now live. Dubbed “An Eye For An Eye”, the update adds a World Seed to Terraria inspired by The Constant along with shaders and lighting based on Don’t Starve. There are also mechanics like having to eat to maintain one’s health, increased drop rate for new Don’t Starve-inspired items and the arrival of Deerclops as a new boss.

Deerclops arrives in mid/late pre-Hardmode and has some music based on its original theme from Don’t Starve (mixed by Klei Entertainment itself). It awaits in the Ice Biome and there are apparently some nice surprises to look forward to. As for the Don’t Starve-inspired items, there are 25 of them, from Lucy the Axe to Chester, a pet that holds your items.

As for Don’t Starve, it gets the Eye of Terror boss (based on Terraria’s Eye of Cthulu) along with the Twins of Error (which offer their own equipment items and statues). A new critter has also been added along with a new foot items, new recipes and Terraria item skins. There’s also a three piece character set inspired by the traveling merchant from Terraria. Logging in will also net the Terrarized chest which gives six skins for free until the next update in December.

These games prove that misery truly loves company.

Ah, the act of surviving together. There’s nothing better than foraging, creating a base together and building a thriving community…before it all comes apart from death, disease or zombies. Even with all the terrible things that can happen, survival games are still immensely popular and have some of the most dedicated fan bases out there. Let’s take a look at 15 of the best survival games worth playing in co-op.

Don’t Starve Together

Expanding upon Klei Entertainment’s excellent survival experience, Don’t Starve Together is more than just the base game with co-op mechanics. It offers three modes – Survival, which turns dead players into ghosts that drain the sanity of the living; Wilderness, which puts each player in a random location; and Endless, where players can respawn endlessly. With its plethora of content – from DLC like Reign of Giants, Shipwrecked and Hamlet to new characters and free updates – Don’t Starve Together remains one of the premiere multiplayer survival experiences.

Tons of Don't Starve content, both paid and free, is on the way.

Klei Entertainment may have been a little quiet since E3 2017 after announcing Griftlands but it’s been incredibly busy working on new content for Don’t Starve, it’s critically acclaimed survival game.

And there is a lot of content coming – first up is the announcement of Don’t Starve: Hamlet, a new single-player DLC that will see Wilson travel to the Pigmen’s originating place. It promises some bushwhacking, tomb raiding and more than enough exploration. Check it out below.

It was also revealed that the Shipwrecked DLC would be receiving a free update to add even more content. This includes a new resource with Tar, three new varieties of tropical fish, the ability to create a Sea Yard, Galley and Sea Lab, a craftable Sea Wall and much more.

Co-op DLC Don’t Starve Together will also be receiving some time-limited events like The Forge which sees players heading into a flaming world to fight the Battlemaster and Grand Forge Boarrior, the latter who must be challenged with six players. New traits, combat bonuses, weapons, armour and much more will also be available for the event.

As for Don’t Starve: Hamlet, you can expect it to arrive sometime in Q1 or Q2 2018. What are your thoughts on all the upcoming content? Let us know in the comments below.

Update includes the "vast majority" of the expansion's content.

Klei Entertainment’s Don’t Starve Together, fashioned as the multiplayer component to the hit indie survival game Don’t Starve, has recently been updated. The game is currently in Early Access and included many components of the base game with the promise of more features in future patches. The newest patch has added the majority of content from the Reign of Giants expansion.

There are several ways to play Don’t Starve Together. You could either pick it up in Early Access or purchase the original Don’t Starve, which will net you the multiplayer component for free. You can purchase the Frontier Pack at 75 percent off and receive two copies of Don’t Starve Together or invest in the Mega Pack which includes the original game, Reign of Giants and Don’t Starve Together along with a free gift copy of the multiplayer component.

What are your thoughts on the most recent update though? Let us know in the comments.
