All it took was one bad bit of code to wipe your progress.

Everyone faces their own personal tragedies when it comes to games. Dying to gravity in a Dark Souls deathless run, a single Infected ruining your colony in They Are Billions…however, no tragedy is greater than ultimately losing your save data. Let’s take a look at 15 games this happened with and relive those dark days.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

For all the credit that Grand Theft Auto games get, it’s easy to forget some of the major bugs in early titles like Vice City. In launch copies, there was a nasty bug during the Ice Cream Factory mission. If you tried to save during the mission, the save data would become corrupted, requiring you to start from the game’s beginning. This was fixed for subsequent copies of the game but that feeling of losing progress, any kind of progress, was still a bummer.

Some truly messed up death screens within, if you dare proceed

In general, one of the last things you want to do in a video game is die. It stops forward momentum, forces you to retread ground and in the terms of a difficulty spike, can become somewhat annoying. While games as a universal whole need some challenge pushing back against the player and death isn’t going away, some games take the chance to make that failure state, that game over screen a part of their identity. Then there’s these 15 games that just get a little bit messed up in that pursuit. Make sure to share your favourite examples in the comments!

Batman Arkham Knight

When the Dark Knight falls finally, due to a lucky shot from that one goon with the AK you didn’t see, one of the big bads will emerge from the surrounding darkness to deliver the final indignity, mocking the big bat bat for failing in his crusade. Now most of the time and through most of the series, that’s all the game over screen is. A final taunt from a literal comic book villain. But certain scenes within Batman: Arkham Knight will trigger the appearance of Joker, with a very different allusion to Bruce not being the one in control anymore, and the Joker Virus having taken over his body. The psychopathic clown prince of crime with the physical assets of Batman making him unstoppable? That’s a nightmare situation, body horror of losing yourself aside.

Join us for 15 video game endings that just so insultingly didn't try.

First impressions are important, but how a video game wraps up the experience can also colour our impressions of a title overall. Unfortunately not all titles get to have the strong finish they needed, whether they were the awkward middle child of a trilogy, hacked to pieces due to budget at the last minute or a developer just got a bit cocky and left us with a sequel bait tease that never would go anywhere, sometimes we see games that we complete and are just insulted that it could be left with that. Spoilers ahead, you’ve been warned.

Deus Ex Human Revolution

Deus Ex: Human Revolution shared with players a dystopic future with questions of transhumanism that we may very well be answering in the real world soon enough as technology seems to rapidly develop. With such fantastic base concept, and the Illuminati stoking the fires of the war to come between the Augmented and the normal humans, what did the title have to say about the whole debate it presented? It just asks you to pick a button to decide your ending. We never asked for this.
