It was something of a long wait, but we finally got the reveal of the DLC for DOOM Eternal, The Ancient Gods. The first part of the expansion will come in October as both DLC for the original base release, as well as a standalone download for those who don’t own the base game. And while the sound of the experuence may be similar, the people behind it are different.

If you don’t recall, shortly after DOOM Eternal‘s release, the game’s composer, the somewhat legendary Mick Gordon, had something of a falling out with id Software and said it was doubtful he would ever work with the developer again. It was later confirmed that he would not be composing the DLC music. Instead, it’ll be Andrew Hulshult and David Levy. Hulshult is known for his composing work on first person shooters such as Quake Champions and Dusk, and Levy is mostly known for his work on the Red vs Blue series.

DOOM Eternal is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia, and The Ancient Gods Part 1 will release across all platforms October 20th.

The scope of the expansion is "every bit as grand as the main game," as per game director Hugo Martin.

DOOM Eternal’s upcoming campaign expansion, The Ancient Gods – Part One has looked promising in what we have seen of it so far (which isn’t surprising, when you consider the quality of the base game), and id Software want to ensure that the journey it presents is accessible to as many players as possible.

Speaking in a recent interview with PCGamesN, game director Hugo Martin confirmed that The Ancient Gods will be a standalone expansion, and will be playable for everyone, even if you don’t have access to the base game- think Dishonored: Death of the Outsider or Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

“When we look at how many people have played through the game we have a large percentage – higher than 2016 – that have completed it, so you’re always looking at that and seeing how far players make it through your game,” Martin said. “It’s important as we want the DLC to reach as many people as possible. In fact, you don’t even need to own DOOM Eternal to buy the DLC and play it.”

Speaking about the scope of the expansion, Martin said that team is “very proud” of how it’s turned out- which is bigger than what they were initially expecting. In fact, Martin says The Ancient Gods is going to be as large in scope as DOOM Eternal’s base game itself.

“Most people would associate DLC with being of smaller scope – it’s kind of like the made for TV version of the movie, and the movie was the main game,” he said. “For us, this is very much like a two-part film – this is every bit as grand as the main game was.”

DOOM Eternal is currently available for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia, with Nintendo Switch and next-gen versions also in the works. The Ancient Gods – Part One will release for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on October 20.

One can never get enough of DOOM, and thankfully id Software and Bethesda are well aware of that fact. Later this year, we’ll be getting the first campaign expansion of DOOM Eternal, called The Ancient Gods: Part One, and at Gamescom Opening Night Live, we got out first proper look at the previously teased DLC.

Following the events of DOOM Eternal, an imbalance of power threatens the very fabric of reality. With the help of an old ally, the Doom Slayer travels back to Urdak to set things right. The trailer promises more grand vistas, formidable foes, and some classic DOOM ripping and tearing. Fans of the base game will like what’s being shown- check it out below.

DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Part One will launch for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on October 20, so there isn’t much of a wait between now and its release.

Bethesda recently confirmed that DOOM Eternal will also release for PS5 and Xbox Series X. Read more on that through here.
