It seems the rumours were true after all. Bandai Namco’s Dragon Ball Project Z, an action RPG that retells the story of Goku and friends against foes like Vegeta and Frieza, is officially called Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Check out the latest trailer below, which features many iconic moments from the franchise.

Out in early 2020, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is developed by CyberConnect 2 (who were actually working on Final Fantasy 7 Remake before Square Enix took over). The focus is squarely on Goku this time around, as he’ll go from tussling with Vegeta and his infamous Oozaru form to battling Frieza on the planet Namek. The latter marks the first appearance of the iconic Super Saiyan form.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is in development for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Expect more gameplay footage to emerge in the coming months, especially with Gamescom taking place in August. What kind of challenging battles, quests, and mechanics can be expected? Stay tuned for more details and coverage from E3.

Along with news about Dragon Ball FighterZ’s second fighter pass, which includes Jiren and Videl, Bandai Namco also released a trailer for its upcoming Dragon Ball action RPG. It doesn’t currently have a final name – the trailer refers to it as Dragon Ball Game – Project Z. However, we do get a pretty good look at the visuals and different environments.

Developed by CyberConnect2 (of Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm fame), Project Z invites players on a journey to learn about the “mysterious Dragon Balls”. The game will apparently start with Goku battling Piccolo near the end of Dragon Ball, and run up to the battle with Frieza in Dragon Ball Z. Various conflicts and important events, like Vegeta’s arrival, Goku turning Super Saiyan for the first time, and so on were also showcased.

Right now we don’t know much about the combat or how the RPG mechanics will fit in. However, Project Z does look pretty good, and given CyberConnect2’s experience, it should have solid combat. Dragon Ball – Project Z is out later this year for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

When they announced a new season for Dragon Ball FighterZ, Bandai Namco also announced a brand new action RPG in the Dragon Ball franchise that is set to launch this year. So far, they have yet to share details, but a new tweet made by the game’s official account gives us some idea of what to expect from it regardless.

The game will be set in a “never before expressed, nostalgic, and new Dragon Ball world”, apparently, which to me seem to be three totally irreconcilable adjectives. But we’ll see, maybe it somehow manages to be all three. We also got a new picture that may be concept art for the game attached to the tweet, which seems to be reminiscent of the classic Dragon Ball anime.

Whatever the game is, we should learn more about it at the World Tournament for Dragon Ball FighterZ that will be held later this month. Hopefully we get the kind of ambitious console RPG set in the franchise’s world that fans have been dreaming of for years.
