Like many developers, Square Enix has unveiled its lineup for Tokyo Game Show 2025, which includes The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales and Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake. Both titles will be playable via hands-on demos for attendees.

They can also try out Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, a current-gen remaster of the beloved turn-based tactical strategy, which also has a Special Stage Event on September 28th. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, which is coming to Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 in Q4 2025, is also playable.

Octopath Traveler 0 is present, albeit on the stage alone, and will receive a Special Broadcast with new gameplay on September 27th. Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake has a Special Stage Event on the same day, ahead of its October 30th launch for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Stay tuned for more details and other announcements from the show.

Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake players also can't transfer over their save data between the Switch and Switch 2 versions.

While Square Enix has confirmed a Nintendo Switch 2 release for Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake, in a new FAQ, the company has also now confirmed that there is no upgrade path for players who pick up the Switch version of the game and then want to carry it over to a Switch 2. Among other things, the company has noted in the FAQ that both the Switch and Switch 2 will be getting distinct versions of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake.

According to the FAQ, Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake who buy the game on the Nintendo Switch will be able to play it on the Switch 2, but it will run at the same performance and graphical levels as it would on the original Switch. Switch 2 players will also have to buy the game separately, as there will be no upgrades that can be bought at a lower price. Players who decide to move on from the Switch version of the game to the Switch 2 version will also have to start from scratch, as there will be no way to carry over save data.

Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake is a follow-up release to Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. Along with making use of the same art style, Dragon Quest 1 and 2 also have stories that take place after the events of Dragon Quest 3. Together the three titles make up what is referred to as the Edrick trilogy. The first gameplay trailer for Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake was shown off back in March during a Nintendo Direct. While the trailer didn’t reveal too many new features of the game, we did get to see what the titles will look like with the HD-2D art style that Square Enix has been using for some of its titles since Octopath Traveler.

The 2024 release of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has also been quite successful for Square Enix, with the company crediting it earlier this year for a rise in operating income. According to Square Enix’s financial results briefing back in February, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake did better than expected, with net sales totalling up to ¥60 billion, and an operating profit of ¥4.6 billion

Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake is coming to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and the Switch 2 on October 30. The game is currently available for pre-order on all platforms for $59.99.

As for the rest of the Dragon Quest franchise, a brand new mainline game, Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, has been under development for quite some time now. While Square Enix has been generally quiet about the title since its original announcement, we do know that it is being developed on Unreal Engine 5. Rumours have indicated that a remake of Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is also currently under development. However, Square Enix hasn’t yet made an official announcement yet.

The compilation of HD-2D remakes retails for $59.99, with pre-orders receiving various stat-raising Seeds and elevating shoes as bonuses.

Square Enix has announced that Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake will launch on October 30th. While launching for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch, it’s also coming to the Switch 2. You can pre-order the title now for $59.99.

Developed by Artdink, the titles make up The Erdrick Trilogy, of which Dragon Quest 3 is chronologically the first. As a descendant of Erdrick, the player must take on the Dragonlord and save Alefgard. The second game follows a similar premise but on a larger scale with multiple kingdoms and descendants.

Pre-orders receive three Seeds of Strength, Defence, Agility, Life, and Magic alongside a pair of elevating shoes. Those who have save data from Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake can also obtain a dog suit in the first game and a catsuit in the second. All of the above items can be obtained by playing both titles, though they’ll take longer to unlock.

Encompassing the first two games in the series, the HD-2D remakes launch later this year for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Square Enix kicked off the recent Nintendo Direct by revealing the first gameplay trailer for Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake. As remakes of the first two games in the series, they chronologically occur after Dragon Quest 3 as part of the Erdrick trilogy. Check it out below.

Though further information on new features wasn’t revealed, both titles look exceptionally stunning in the HD-2D art style. While characters retain their 2D sprite-like appearance and animations, environments are in full 3D with sleek lighting and shadows.
Nintendo’s Shinya Takahashi teased a character appearing at the end, though further details are unknown. Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch later this year.
Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake launches in 2025, with the original titles serving as the chronological sequels to Dragon Quest 3.

While all eyes are on Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, the company looks to modernize the rest of the Erdrick trilogy when Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake launches next year. It may be tempting to skip the third game and start with the others, even though the former is chronologically the trilogy’s first.

However, as part of the newly released gameplay and previews (via Gematsu), Square Enix confirmed “brand-new surprises” for those who play Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and then Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake. What those could be remains unknown – perhaps some decisions will carry over into the latter and unlock specific rewards.

In the meantime, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake launches on November 14th. It will be available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch, featuring three difficulty settings and multiple graphical modes. Head here for more details, or check out the latest gameplay here.

Square Enix has confirmed that Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake will launch next year for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Following multiple rumors and an announcement of its platforms, Square Enix finally provided a new trailer and release date for Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. It’s out on November 14th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. Check out the latest trailer below.

As the first title in the Erdrick Trilogy, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is developed by Team Asano of Bravely Default fame and Artdink. It utilizes the same engine and art style as Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, with detailed character sprites set against gorgeous 3D environments.

While rumors claimed that the remake would consist of the entire Erdrick Trilogy, Square Enix has also announced Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake. Launching in 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch, this is a separate game that covers the next two games in the trilogy’s chronology. With Dragon Quest 3 acting as the first title chronologically, its remake should prepare fans for the future.
