In a press release announcing the initial sales figures for Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, Square Enix also revealed that Dragon Quest 11 has now sold over 7 million units worldwide across all platforms. Its last sales update was back in 2021, when Square Enix announced that the game had shipped 6.5 million units worldwide.

Dragon Quest 11 originally launched back in 2017 in Japan for 3DS or PS4, before releasing worldwide for PS4 and PC in 2018, and then coming to the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in the years afterwards.

In our review of the game back in 2018, we awarded it a score of 9/10, saying, “Dragon Quest 11 is a stellar game that displays a great command of the ins and outs of its genre the way few other games do. What it lacks in originality, it more than makes up for with its confident execution of ideas, showing that a game doesn’t need to be revolutionary or the freshest thing on the block to be an incredible experience. With a memorable cast of characters, a well-told, briskly paced story, stunning and vibrant visuals, and a beautiful and extremely varied world as its setting, Dragon Quest 11 serves as yet another excellent instalment in this amazingly consistent franchise.” Read the full review through here.

Square Enix is currently also working on Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate. The game was announced back in 2021 and is being built on Unreal Engine 5. Details on it are scant, with director Yuji Horii apologizing for the lack of updates on the game earlier this year. Read more on that through here.

According to Ichimura, long production cycles on games and his own age were factors in his departure. “I’ve started to count how many more games I’ll be able to make in my lifetime,” he said.

Ichimura hasn’t announced any new projects he’ll be working on with a new team, and has said that he would instead like to “reset and reflect”.

“I’d like to leave this blessed environment, and explore what can be made if I dare to push myself into a higher-risk environment,” said Ichimura.

The most recent release in the Dragon Quest franchise is Dragon Quest Treasures, which also got a demo on the Nintendo Switch back in January. The game was released on the Nintendo Switch in December 2022, and features a main story that takes around 15-20 hours to complete.

The last major numbered game in the Dragon Quest franchise was Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age, which saw a number of different releases across various platforms. Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate is also currently in development.

Dragon Quest fans have been treated to a whole host of exciting new announcements to celebrate the franchise’s 35th anniversary. From Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate to an HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 3 built on the Octopath Traveler engine to a treasure hunting RPG spinoff Dragon Quest Treasures, we recently got plenty of new reveals to feast our eyes on. At the same time, Square Enix have also provided the updated sales figures for Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age.

In a press release, Square Enix confirmed that Dragon Quest 11 has shipped 6.5 million units worldwide to date. Those numbers include both, the game’s original launch as well as its Definitive Edition re-release. Considering the fact that the game has been out for a few years now and is available across a large number of platforms, not to mention the game’s strong reception from fans and critics, those sales aren’t all that surprising.

Dragon Quest 11 is available on PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. In Japan, the game is also available for the 3DS.

Meanwhile, though Dragon Quest 12 doesn’t yet have a release date (nor have release platforms been announced), it has been confirmed that it’s going to run on Unreal Engine 5.

It’s that time of the year in Japan when Golden Week is in full swing. To celebrate the week-long series of holidays, Steam is holding a sale for a number of PC titles from Japanese studios. The Golden Week sale is currently live and will end on May 6th at 10 AM PT.

Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition is going to bring the classic JRPG to the Nintendo Switch this Fall. We already know that this game earns the “Definitive Edition” moniker, thanks to having a 2D mode from the 3DS version, extra story content, orchestrated soundtrack, and a Japanese voice track—among other things—and now, we have a bunch of screenshots showing the new content in action.

These new screenshots show off the 2D mode, which will stir the soul of anyone who is nostalgic for the classic, 16-bit era of RPGs. It also includes screenshots showing the party members’ new storylines that are being added to then game. Those who have played the game will recognize where in the story these screens are situated—they seem to recount the events that transpire between acts 1 and 2 (if you haven’t yet played the game, don’t worry—neither my explanation nor the screenshots themselves can actually spoil you out of context).

Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition finally got a Western release window for the Switch. Besides that it’s coming in the Fall, we also received new details on the additional content that can be expected. However, the question for current owners of the game on other platforms is whether they get to experience it as well.

Takashi Mochizuki, a tech reporter for The Wall Street Journal, posed this question to Square Enix and reported the result on Twitter. The publisher said it was “undecided” on whether the additional content would come to PS4 (and PC by extension, we assume). It isn’t a definite “no”, but it’s far from a definite “yes” as well.

It’s a shame, because there’s quite a lot of additional content to be had in the Switch version. There’s a setting for 2D visuals akin to the older games and you can switch between 2D and 3D on the fly. This 2D mode will be familiar to owners of the Nintendo 3DS version of Dragon Quest 11. Furthermore, Dragon Quest 11 S will have English and Japanese voice over support, a full orchestral arrangement for the field and battles, and the ability to fast forward battles.

Oh, and there are new quests for each party member to delve deeper into their individual stories as well. Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition is out on Switch this Fall in the West. While Dragon Quest 11 was actually the very first game announced for the Nintendo Switch (back when it was still known as the Nintendo NX), we didn’t get any more information about it until very recently, when Square Enix finally unveiled some footage on the title. Now, we have some brand new information on what to expect from the Switch port of the beloved JRPG.

The developers confirmed in a scheduled update they shared today that the Switch version of the game will include new scenarios and story content exclusive to it. This should mean content that was not present in either the PS4, or PC (or, presumably, the Japan-only Nintendo 3DS) versions of the game. Previously, they have also confirmed that the Switch version will allow you to marry any character in the game (much to the exultation of Jade fans like myself), unlike the PS4 or PC versions, which only have Gemma as a romancable option.

We also got some brand new footage of the game, which mostly features a whole lot of dialog in Japanese. In other words, it’s all but useless (unless you know Japanese, of course). But if you want to see it, you can below, as part of the livestream Square officially aired.

We finally got to see Dragon Quest 11 S, the Nintendo Switch version of the excellent JRPG that has been a long time coming. What we saw looked good—it was basically the same game as the PS4 version, but on the Switch. The PS4 version has a striking art style realized in Unreal Engine 4, and seeing it brought to life on Switch as is was impressive.

A new video, courtesy of Twinfinite, compares footage from the Switch version with the PS4 version. Side by side, it becomes apparent that the Switch version is (obviously) not exactly as good looking as the PS4 version is. Barring one example where the Switch version seems to have better mid-range draw distance when the hero is out on the overworld, the Switch version very clearly has poorer textures, poorer lighting, and poorer shadows. How much this bothers you will come down to your own tolerance for these kinds of things. However, I personally feel the Switch version holds up remarkably well given it is running on what is essentially a tablet.

We had been promised that the game would be at Jump Festa this year, and true to their words, Square Enix brought the game there. And, at long last, they took the wraps off of the Switch version of Dragon Quest 11.

You can see the first trailer for the game for yourself below. It’s essentially the same as the PS4 version, though during the unveiling, Square Enix claimed that the whole game had been made from the ground up for the Switch. The big thing here for Japanese audiences is voice acting—thus far, no Dragon Quest game in Japan has had that (though of course, Dragon Quest 11’s English localization did have VA).

Beyond that, we don’t know a whole lot about the Switch version. We do get a release window, at least for Japan, and that’s 2019. Hopefully, a western release won’t be too far behind, especially since the actual localization work is mostly done. Square Enix has also promised more information on the game come January 1, 2019–which is next week.

After Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s first DLC being confirmed as Joker from Persona 5, and comments from director Masahiro Sakurai and Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime telling fans to expect more along those lines, the sky seems to be the limit with what the next character introduced to the game via DLC might be. And according to a rumor, that character will be: Erdrick, from Dragon Quest.

Before we proceed, let’s talk about why the rumor is worth paying attention to. It’s the same rumor dump reported by Persona Central that also gave us the leak for “Persona 5 R”, and that rumor correctly called the existence of Granblue Fantasy Versus by Arc Systems Works about a week before it was announced officially.

So, what does this rumor have to say about Smash’s second DLC? Erdrick will be the character, and his costumes will include some that correspond to the Dragon Quest 11 main character. The stage will be Alefgard, and a Slime (the series mascot for Dragon Quest) will show up on the screen. Unlike with Final Fantasy 7, where Square Enix were actively being sticklers with the inclusion of Cloud in Smash, apparently they were very forthcoming with collaborating with Nintendo on this character and his associated assets. The intent seems to be to “benefit the overseas marketing of Dragon Quest 11”, and I have to assume they mean Dragon Quest 11 S, which is announced for the Switch, but doesn’t have any more information yet.

Once more, this is but a rumor—it may be true, but it may not be, and it’s irresponsible to treat it as fact until it’s confirmed either way. For now, Joker in Smash is all the DLC information we have.
