Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition is now available on Xbox One, PS4 and PC along with Xbox Game Pass. Unfortunately, the base version has been delisted on Steam at the publisher’s request. Current owners can still download the game and play it.

However, there’s no option – either paid or free – to upgrade. A straightforward upgrade would have been tough since the Definitive Edition is based on the Switch version, making it entirely different to the original PC release. But it may have been possible for Square Enix to offer a discount for the new version to owners of the base game.

The Steam page has seen a number of negative user reviews since the delisting (though the overall rating is still 88 percent positive). Before Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition launched on Nintendo Switch, it received a super-meaty demo with up to 10 hours of content. With the RPG coming to Xbox One, PS4 and PC in December, said demo is now available to download on those platforms. Check out the trailer below.

Along with showcasing the game’s beginning, where the player controls the Luminary in their quest to save Erdrea, the demo should provide an idea of the game’s exploration, combat and story-telling. It also offers a look at the visuals, especially since the Definitive Edition for all three platforms is based on the Switch version. We’ll see how it measures up to the original in good time.

Square Enix has released a new trailer for Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition. Along with showcasing expected content, its description confirms that the title will be an Xbox Play Anywhere title for Xbox One and Windows 10. This means you can pick it up on one platform and receive a free digital copy for the other.

Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition follows The Luminary as they embark on a quest to stop the forces of darkness from destroying Edrea. It originally launched for the Nintendo Switch, adding new scenarios for each character, a revamped orchestral soundtrack and a 2D mode. There’s even the option to switch to Japanese voice-acting.

Available on December 4th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Game Pass, it will also be coming to PS4 and Steam. However, it’s worth noting that these versions aren’t upgrades for the original Dragon Quest 11 but a port of the Switch version of Dragon Quest 11 S. Character models, lighting and other graphics will be downgraded as a result so keep that in mind before picking it up.

It was an interesting day for Dragon Quest fans, as the series expanded its horizons quite a lot. The latest entry in the series, Dragon Quest 11 S, was announced to be coming to the Xbox family and Windows 10 Store by the end of the year. It was then clarified that the game would also come to the PS4 and Steam, where the title originally released. But it does seem as if there is a pretty big disclaimer here.

While the original version of Dragon Quest 11 released on PS4 and PC (as well as a 3DS version that did not leave Japan), Dragon Quest 11 S was an expanded version with a lot of bonus content as well as material from the 3DS added in that released on the Switch. The game coming to PS4/Xbox One/Xbox Series X/PC at the end of the year will be based on that Switch port, not the vanilla release mentioned above.

That means that the game will be a separate release from vanilla, and that it will be based around the downgraded models and lighting the Switch version saw. Apparently, the game was essentially remade in a newer version of Unreal Engine 4 to accommodate the Switch. That seemingly means making this a patch or update to the PS4/Steam original release is implausible, and as of now there is no upgrade or discount option for those who bought the original release. Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition is going to bring the classic JRPG to the Nintendo Switch this Fall. We already know that this game earns the “Definitive Edition” moniker, thanks to having a 2D mode from the 3DS version, extra story content, orchestrated soundtrack, and a Japanese voice track—among other things—and now, we have a bunch of screenshots showing the new content in action.

These new screenshots show off the 2D mode, which will stir the soul of anyone who is nostalgic for the classic, 16-bit era of RPGs. It also includes screenshots showing the party members’ new storylines that are being added to then game. Those who have played the game will recognize where in the story these screens are situated—they seem to recount the events that transpire between acts 1 and 2 (if you haven’t yet played the game, don’t worry—neither my explanation nor the screenshots themselves can actually spoil you out of context).

Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition finally got a Western release window for the Switch. Besides that it’s coming in the Fall, we also received new details on the additional content that can be expected. However, the question for current owners of the game on other platforms is whether they get to experience it as well.

Takashi Mochizuki, a tech reporter for The Wall Street Journal, posed this question to Square Enix and reported the result on Twitter. The publisher said it was “undecided” on whether the additional content would come to PS4 (and PC by extension, we assume). It isn’t a definite “no”, but it’s far from a definite “yes” as well.

It’s a shame, because there’s quite a lot of additional content to be had in the Switch version. There’s a setting for 2D visuals akin to the older games and you can switch between 2D and 3D on the fly. This 2D mode will be familiar to owners of the Nintendo 3DS version of Dragon Quest 11. Furthermore, Dragon Quest 11 S will have English and Japanese voice over support, a full orchestral arrangement for the field and battles, and the ability to fast forward battles.

Oh, and there are new quests for each party member to delve deeper into their individual stories as well. Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition is out on Switch this Fall in the West. Nintendo showed off the long in the making (seriously, I say this every time, but it was the first game announced for the Nintendo Switch, back when it was still called the NX) Switch version of Dragon Quest 11 today. The Switch version of the game, which will rightly get the “Definitive Edition” billing in the west, will include the 2D overview map from the 3DS version (the full game will be playable in this view) as well as the full 3D view from the PS4 and PC versions.

It will also be the first version of the game to launch with the orchestral soundtrack included, including new content and features, such as personal stories for each of the characters, and allowing players to play with either the English or the Japanese voice tracks, and more. Nintendo promised more of a look at everything that Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age: Definitive Edition has to offer to newcomers and veterans alike at a later date.

Most importantly, we now also have a release window for the game—it’s launching this Fall in the west.
