Though it's not official yet, series creator Yuji Horii says Square Enix could also remake the first two games in the series in the HD-2D style.

The recent Dragon Quest 35th anniversary stream was packed full of exciting announcements, from Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate to the treasure hunting RPG spinoff Dragon Quest Treasures. Another announcement was Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, a ground-up remake of one of the most beloved games in the series built on the Octopath Traveler engine. It looked great in what little we saw of it- and there’s a chance that it might not be the only classic Dragon Quest game to receive this treatment.

As spotted by Nintendo Life, during the aforementioned stream, series creator Yuji Horii also said that Dragon Quest 1 and 2 might also receive similar HD-2D remakes down the line, before adding that though that’s something the developers want to do, it hasn’t yet been officially decided.

“Maybe afterwards we may remake [Dragon Quest] 1 and 2… so maybe one and two would be some kind of unexpected surprise,” he said, then added later, “We want to, but it’s not official yet.”

The HD-2D style that Square Enix introduced with Octopath Traveler is ripe bringing back classics, and we’ve seen more than a few fans who’ve been calling for remakes of older Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games. It’s great to see that people at Square Enix are beginning to take that into account now.

No release date has been provided for Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, nor do we know what platforms it’s going to release for (same as Dragon Quest 12 and Dragon Quest Treasures).

Dragon Quest has been getting a lot of representation on the Nintendo Switch this year. First, Dragon Quest Builders 2 came out, which was promptly followed by Dragon Quest’s Hero joining the massive roster of fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Soon, Dragon Quest 11 S will be out on the system as well. But for those of you who’re looking for something decidedly more old school- well, there’s something coming to whet your appetites as well.

Recently, it was announced that the original Dragon Quest trilogy – namely Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest 2: Luminaries of the Legendary Nine, and Dragon Quest 3: The Seeds of Salvation – would be coming to the Switch in Japan. Now, the series’ official Twitter page has made the announcement that the games are also coming to the Switch in North America and Europe (the latter will also be seeing console releases for the original trilogy for the first time, ever).

All three will be available via the eShop on September 27th, so there isn’t long left for their releases either.

Find out where it all began – the first three #DragonQuest games are coming to North America, and for the first time on console in Europe, on #NintendoSwitch!

You can start with any of the three games, so get ready for classic adventures from September 27th. pic.twitter.com/iPklL1k0uv

Erdrick, the legendary hero from the Dragon Quest series, may be set to join Super Smash Bros.

After Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s first DLC being confirmed as Joker from Persona 5, and comments from director Masahiro Sakurai and Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime telling fans to expect more along those lines, the sky seems to be the limit with what the next character introduced to the game via DLC might be. And according to a rumor, that character will be: Erdrick, from Dragon Quest.

Before we proceed, let’s talk about why the rumor is worth paying attention to. It’s the same rumor dump reported by Persona Central that also gave us the leak for “Persona 5 R”, and that rumor correctly called the existence of Granblue Fantasy Versus by Arc Systems Works about a week before it was announced officially.

So, what does this rumor have to say about Smash’s second DLC? Erdrick will be the character, and his costumes will include some that correspond to the Dragon Quest 11 main character. The stage will be Alefgard, and a Slime (the series mascot for Dragon Quest) will show up on the screen. Unlike with Final Fantasy 7, where Square Enix were actively being sticklers with the inclusion of Cloud in Smash, apparently they were very forthcoming with collaborating with Nintendo on this character and his associated assets. The intent seems to be to “benefit the overseas marketing of Dragon Quest 11”, and I have to assume they mean Dragon Quest 11 S, which is announced for the Switch, but doesn’t have any more information yet.

Once more, this is but a rumor—it may be true, but it may not be, and it’s irresponsible to treat it as fact until it’s confirmed either way. For now, Joker in Smash is all the DLC information we have.

Could this be a sign of things to come?

We know that Square Enix had made a part of Dragon Quest III using the Unreal Engine in order to prepare for their work on Dragon Quest XI. Fans of the series hoped that this was a sign that the beloved classic was being remade for next-gen consoles.

Now, Square Enix is looking to hire a technical artist for the Dragon Quest series who will be working on the Unreal Engine 4. The requirements state that a prospective employee for the role must be skilled at creating shaders, overseeing and proposing expression techniques, to organize and improve artist workflow, and finally, to be able to collaborate with team leads.

It was Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age that was the first game in the series to make use of the Unreal Engine 4. As a technical test, Square Enix rebuilt the continent of Aliahan from Dragon Quest III. This enabled them to better get a sense of what they were working with.

While some have interpreted the news to suggest a remake of Dragon Quest III, it is also possible that this is only to do with the release of Dragon Quest XI for the Nintendo
