From Software’s Dark Souls 2 has seen a strong start in Japan, according to the latest batch of Media Create charts. Despite being on sale for three days, the PS3 version soared to the top and managed to sell 255,197 units.

Level-5’s Yokai Watch managed to move up to second place with 37,247 units sold for a lifetime total of 569,720 units sold while Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca’s Wonderful Mysterious Keys sold 18,728 units for a lifetime sales total of 737,593 units.

PS4 titles have pretty much exited the top ten, though the PS3 version of Yakuza: Ishin managed to sell 10,034 units (with lifetime sales at 222,147 units). Pokemon X/Y is inching ever closer to selling 4 million units within its lifetime in Japan with 10,106 units sold this week and a lifetime total of 3,994,938 units. inFamous: Second Son is due to arrive on March 21st so it could have a bearing on the console’s success in Japan but we’ll have to wait and see.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze debuts at second place.

Media Create sales for games in Japan from the period of February 10th to 16th are out and to very little surprise, Square Enix’s Dragon Quest Monsters 2 maintained its hold of the top spot to amass over a half million lifetime sales. It sold 118,427 units this week, which is a huge drop from its debut, but still enough to counter many of the new games that had released.

These include Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the Wii U, which managed to sell 35,717 units on release. Third place went to A-Train 3D which sold 27,009 units in its debut on the 3DS while Kirby Triple Deluxe had a respectable showing in fourth place with 23,017 units sold (with lifetime sales of 440,131 units).

Magi: A New World debuted at sixth place for the 3DS with 15,793 units sold. Meanwhile, Pokemon X/Y still has a presence in the top 10, selling 12,750 units this week and hitting 3,950,322 lifetime sales. Will it reach 4 million units sold in Japan? We’ll find out in the coming weeks so stay tuned.

Super Heroine Chronicle and Terraria also debut in Japan.

Square Enix may not be all smiles with the Western release of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII being met with universally middling reviews, but the release of Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca’s Wonderful Mysterious Keys in Japan might be a source of good news. According to Media Create, the 3DS game debuted in the week of February 3rd to 9th and managed to sell a whopping 443,656 units.

By comparison the next entry Puyopuyo Tetris, also from Square Enix, sold 44,627 units with its debut. Super Heroine Chronicle on the Vita only managed to sell 14,467 units with its debut.

The usual suspects including Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme VS. Full Boost for the PS3 sold 29,647 units for lifetime sales of 299,587 units. Yokai Watch sold 28,407 units (401,606 lifetime sales) while Kirby: Triple Deluxe sold 24,658 units (for 417,115 lifetime sales).

Interestingly Terraria for the PS Vita also had a decent start, selling 15,070 units in its debut. How long it stays with Japanese consumers remains to be seen, especially given the popularity of the Vita in Japan.
