The Fall season is just getting started but there are already some big releases to play.

September is nearly here and that means the vaunted Fall deluge is nearly upon us. Next month will see some big triple-A releases, some long-awaited indie gems and of course, sports games. Whatever your tastes may be, there’s plenty to look forward to so let’s check out 10 standout titles in September 2018.

Spider-Man

The biggest release of the month, bar none, Insomniac’s highly anticipated Spider-Man game will finally be available. Releasing exclusively for PS4 on September 7th, Spider-Man will feature the enormous open city of Manhattan to explore and several villains like Electro, Vulture, Shocker, Mister Negative and much more. Though Spidey will be mostly on his lonesome, he’ll have a number of different suits to help him out – like the Velocity Suit and Iron Spider. With the wit and adventure that dictates a Spider-Man tale, we can’t wait to see how this exclusive shakes out.

NBA 2K19

So last year’s NBA 2K wasn’t exactly well received by the community – and people in general. NBA 2K19 appears to stay close to its roots, celebrating its 20th anniversary and bringing the Neighborhood out once again for players to roam in. With a soundtrack curated by Travis Scott and some good looking visuals, maybe this will be the redemption that the series deserves. NBA 2K19 is out on September 11th for Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Set two months after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider continues the journey of Lara Croft as she tries to stop Trinity. Of course, she accidentally triggers the apocalypse in the process and must make things right. Along with expanded combat and weapon customization options, Shadow of the Tomb Raider will feature tougher tombs and full underwater exploration. Perhaps even more interesting are the different settings for each gameplay aspect, letting players make certain parts easier or harder. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is out on September 14th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Valkyria Chronicles 4

The Valkyria Chronicles series has had a number of follow-ups including the ill-fated Valkyria Revolution. However, it’s been a long time since we’ve had a title that follows the overall atmosphere of the first game. Valkyria Chronicles 4 seems intent on going that route, even taking place around the same time as the first game. It introduces a new Grenadier class and also has the Brave System, which adds further customization when a unit dies or is fatally wounded, allowing for stat increases and AP restoration. Valkyria Chronicles 4 will be out on Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch on September 25th.

Life is Strange 2 – Episode 1

Dontnod’s Life is Strange 2 will see its first episode releasing on September 27th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Moving on from the saga of Max and Chloe, the sequel follows the Diaz brothers, Sean and Daniel. Following an incident of sorts, the duo is on the run and heading to their home in Mexico. Like the first game, different decisions will lead to different outcomes, though it will also have the effect of influencing young Daniel’s thinking as the story progresses. Whether the game can still tug at our heartstrings and deliver a compelling story remains to be seen but for now, it’s looking pretty good.

FIFA 19

Another year, another FIFA and another chapter in the Journey of Alex Hunter. Along with including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup for the first time, FIFA 19 also revamps a number of its gameplay features. Though the Active Touch and 50/50 systems sound “meh”, the Dynamic Tactics system lets players create different strategies and then change between them during a match. It’s all well and good but will this year’s FIFA shake things up? We’ll find out when it releases for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC on September 28th.

The Bard’s Tale 4: Barrows Deep

A follow-up to the classic RPG series, The Bard’s Tale 4: Barrows Deep features much of the same party-based dungeon crawling that made the old games so endearing. With several unique classes, dozens of different skills, seven cultures and tons of puzzles to solve, The Bard’s Tale 4 looks to be an absolutely compelling experience set in a beautifully detailed world. Look for it to release for PC on September 18th.

Dakar 18

Lest you think this is another underwhelming racer from Milestone, Dakar 18 is actually an open world racing game. It’s centred on the real world Dakar Rally endurance race, taking place in South America across 9000 kilometres. Along with an immense world, players can expect five different types of vehicles from cars and motorcycles to quad bikes. You can even walk around on foot if necessary. Dakar 18 releases on September 11th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Dragon Quest XI

The epic follow-up in Square-Enix’s famous RPG series (no, not that one. The other one). Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age takes place in Lotozetasia and follows a hero who is also called “The Luminary”. The hero’s role is to battle the forces of darkness and prevent the “Dark One” from being resurrected. Though the premise seems cliched, Dragon Quest XI offers a compelling adventure with memorable companions and solid turn-based combat. It’ll release on September 4th for PS4 and PC.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season – Episode 2: Suffer the Children

Telltale Games kicked off the final season of The Walking Dead pretty well with Episode 1: Done Running. With Clementine and AJ finding a safe haven of sorts with other kids, Episode 2: Suffer the Children will continue to amp up the drama and potential dangers to come. And yes, we’re doing our best not to spoil things for you. Episode 2 releases on September 25th for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC.

A fresh look at the combat for the new game.

The latest in the long line of Dragon Quest entries Dragon Quest XI, is coming to PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch very soon, and fans who aren’t satisfied with the upcoming Builders sequel will be thrilled to check out some brand new screenshots, showing off the combat of the game.

We’ve included the screenshots just below for you to peruse. Fan favourite enemies like the ubiquitous series mascot Slime appear, as well as some truly dazzling vistas and particle effects for magic cast by the protagonist. Everything looks very impressively animated, and the worlds really pops thanks to some amazing colour work.

The game is expected this September on PS4 and PC, and later on for Nintendo Switch. Square Enix has taken notes from their Neir Automata Steam release and hopes to avoid having the same issues for the series debut on PC, promising native 4K resolution and more out of the gate.

Square Enix has announced their financial results for the nine months up to December 31, 2017. Overall, there has been a considerable increase in both operating and ordinary income. Additionally, the specific results of Digital Entertainment business was also detailed.

Although there were some big releases for consoles such as Dragon Quest XI and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, the overall sales had declined as compared to the previous year. This decline of sales was caused due to a lack of blockbuster games released within this period. However, operating income has increased thanks to the many downloads of older titles such as Nier: Automata, and the success of the company’s mobile games. As for their MMORPGS, Square Enix reported strong performance of both Dragon Quest X and Final Fantasy XIV.

Overall, the company has had great results during this period with a 66.9% increase in operating profit as compared to the previous year.

Zelda wins, with Dragon Quest XI and Nier: Automata ranking at second and third positions.

As the year draws to a close, the Japanese magazine Weekly Famitsu asked a hundred Japanese developers and other industry personalities to vote on their favorite games of the year. Not surprisingly, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has topped the list with Dragon Quest XI and Nier: Automata following in second and third positions respectively.

It is interesting that of the top 5 games on the list, three of them are Switch exclusives with Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey coming in at fourth and fifth respectively. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is quite high up on the list as well at no. 8.

Some of these games weren’t released this year, since the developers may have simply voted for games they only got around to playing this year. This is why titles such as Undertale feature on the list. Also, the vote wasn’t exclusive to game developers but also included voice actors and other industry personalities. You can check out the full list below (via Dualshockers).

Basically if you're a Dragon Quest fan, get this system.

The first ever game announced for the Nintendo Switch, back when it was the NX, was Dragon Quest 11– today at the Nintendo Switch presentation, Nintendo confirmed that the game will indeed be coming to the Switch. We still don’t know which version it will be- will it be the 3DS version, the PS4 one, or one all for it? But we do know that the game is coming to it.

We also got confirmation that Dragon Quest 10, the Dragon Quest MMO that originally launched on Wii and Wii U, before launching on PC, 3DS, and PS4 as well, will also be making its way over to the Nintendo Switch. And Dragon Quest Heroes and Dragon Quest Heroes 2 will be launching for the Nintendo Switch as well- in fact, both of them will be available in a double pack at the system’s launch.

So for Dragon Quest fans, especially ones on Nintendo’s previous systems, which have all hosted multiple Dragon Quest games, this is great news.

Dragon Quest XI is coming on three platforms now.

Square Enix’s eleventh instalment in the Dragon Quest franchise, Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time, is now coming to Nintendo’s upcoming console, the NX, in addition to the already announced PS4 and 3DS versions of course.

Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii was recently featured in a round-table interview with October issue of Nintendo Dream, with translation provided via Gematsu, Horii was asked whether there is a NX version in the works, to which he replied positively. Later on during the interview, he hinted at a simultaneous release across all three platforms, to avoid any major spoilers or leaks.

“Spoilers will emerge if we release one version earlier. (Laughs.) However, we’re a little concerned about the sense of distance in movement. It’s different for each of the supported hardware,” he stated. Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time is planned to release in Japan next year for PS4, 3DS and now, Nintendo NX.

Absolutely beautiful.

Dragon Quest 11 was finally announced after years of intense speculation, and in a surprise move, it was announced that the game would be getting two versions– a custom tailor made version for the Nintendo 3DS, as well as another version of the game made for the PS4 (a version for Nintendo’s NX console was also announced). Essentially, these would be two different games made on the same story and concept.

We got to see a fair bit of both games during their announcement event, actually, but one can never have too much Dragon Quest- especially when Dragon Quest looks as absolutely gorgeous as it does. And so, here are eight brand new screenshots for you, four each for PS4 and 3DS, showing us just how absolutely pretty and old school this new Dragon Quest game looks.

I can’t have it soon enough, and I really hope Square Enix does not dawdle on the localization.

We are fourteen hours away from the reveal of a brand new Dragon Quest, the eleventh numbered entry in Enix’s long running, storied RPG franchise, and finally, we have started to get the leaks. What you can see above is the purported logo for the game, in all of its glory- it reads Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time, indicating that the new game may have the passage of time as a central theme, much like Dragon Quest V, often considered to be the best game in the franchise, did.

As of right now, nothing is known about Dragon Quest XI- at various times in the past, we have been assured, however, that the game will be a single player traditional console RPG, indicating that the MMORPG/handheld game experimentation of the DS/Wii era is at an end.

Dragon Quest XI is due to be announced in 14 hours- stay tuned to GamingBolt for further coverage.

Now the question is- which console?

Square Enix’s Dragon Quest series is now awaiting its eleventh entry, and everyone is waiting to see just what kind of a game this will be, and for what system. After the series hit its zenith with Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King on the PlayStation 2, the last two entries have been more experimental. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Sky for the Nintendo DS was a game made for handhelds, with a focus on loot and asynchronous multiplayer; meanwhile, Dragon Quest X, which was released on the Wii, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, PC, iOS, and Android, was a full fledged MMORPG that the west never even got to see.

However, while speaking in France at an Anime Expo to French outlet FFFring, series creator and director Yuji Horii confirmed that Dragon Quest XI will be a traditional, single player RPG, and that it will be coming to home consoles. This is an interesting announcement, because Dragon Quest has traditionally been on the largest selling platform in Japan – which this time around would have been the Nintendo 3DS. With Dragon Quest XI having been confirmed for home consoles (none of which is doing particularly well in Japan at the moment), this entry marks a break from tradition.

As for which system the game will be on, well, that’s anybody’s guess. PlayStation 3? PlayStation 4? Wii U? Two or all three of those? Who knows? We will keep you posted.

Because he is busy with Dragon Quest XI.

Dragon Quest X just got its third expansion pack announced at Jump Fiesta earlier today, but surprisingly enough, that announcement came with another one- that longtime series director Yuji Horii won’t be directing it.

Now, before you start freaking out and start worrying about the future of the franchise, calm down. Horii confirmed that he won’t be working on the new expansion pack precisely because of the future of the series- he is currently working on Dragon Quest XI, and that is taking up all his time.

That sounds good to me, especially since it’s further proof that Dragon Quest XI is in fact actually a thing and in production. Of course, we still don’t know what platform it’s for- a while ago, the 3DS seemed like a lock, but right now, it’s not so sure. It could be for anything from 3DS to PS3 and PS4 to even Wii U. Or maybe it will be for all of them.

Dragon Quest X, meanwhile, is available for the Wii, Wii U, PC, and Nintendo 3DS.
