In what must be the most baffling move (and revision) by Nintendo yet, the gaming giant has announced today the Nintendo 2DS, the latest revision for the Nintendo 3DS line of systems which currently includes the original model as well as the XL.

The Nintendo 2DS is a version of the hardware that is shaped like the tablet and includes full feature parity with the other 3DS systems, except for the absence of stereoscopic 3D output, getting rid of the handheld’s signature feature; it also does not have a power saver mode.

The Nintendo 2DS retails for $129, which makes it $40 cheaper than the cheapest 3DS model, and $70 cheaper than the 3DS XL as well as the PS Vita, which just recently got a price cut. It hits stores on October 12, alongside Pokemon X and Y. Currently, only a release in North America and Europe has been announced- no Japanese release has been announced yet.

The Nintendo 2DS is aimed at the lower end of the market (effectively eliminating competition from Nintendo’s own DSi), as well as young kids, whose parents would not otherwise buy the handheld because of the health risks associated with 3D.

No news on a tablet-less Wii U Minus U yet.

The 3DS is possibly the most anticipated gaming machine ever. The handheld, which is a successor to the 130 million selling Nintendo DS, is capable of displaying stereoscopic 3D without the need for 3D glasses, boasts an improved ad seamless online infrastructure, is probably more powerful than the Wii, and has impressive third party support, from Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid 3 to Capcom’s Resident Evil Revelations. Most notably, the handheld marks Nintendo shifting focus to the core gamer yet again, after nearly half a decade of wooing the casual market.

Naturally, the price of a system as loaded as the 3DS is going to be the topic of much speculation. Analysts like Pachter, who’re never right by the way, believe that the handheld could cost upwards of $250- and still sell millions.

However, today Nintendo provided us with an ‘official hint’ (whatever that is), as to just how the 3DS may be priced.

“On price, we haven’t made any kind of announcement at the moment, but the Nintendo DSi is available for around £129.99,” said UK marketing manager James Honeywell.

“The Nintendo DSi XL, with the larger screens, is around £159.99. So obviously, it’s going to fit, kind of, somewhere within that kind of architecture.”

As you can see, he gave us no indication of whether it’s going to be costlier than the XL. However, he did tell us it would be somewhere around that price range. I’d hedge my bets at $199.

The official announcement of the 3DS’ launch date and price is due 29th September.

With 28,916 shifted this week, Nintendo’s oversized version of the Ds, DSi LL became the largest selling hardware in Japan this week.

According to Media Create, combined, DS sales were 51,264 (DSi LL 28,916, DSi 17,356, DS Lite 4992) and was much ahead of every other piece of hardware on Earth (or beyond).

PS3 was fourth with 18,345 units sold while the Xbox 360 sales were fairly abysmal at 5688. The PS2 was at the bottom, with 1558 sales.

Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem – Hero of Light and Shadow, the newly released DS games, topped all charts. Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road Victory for the Wii, a newly released card-based adventure, was second in the charts.

Both the games sold equally- they sold 136,000 units, but Fire Emblem was still featured at the top of the list.

Jikkyo Powerful Pro Baseball 2010 for the PS3 was third, Wii party was fourth and Last Ranker for the PSP was fifth (yes, PSP games can sell sometimes, ok? Don’t act so surprised).

Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2010 for the PSP, Inazuma Eleven 3: World Challenge!! Spark / Bomber for the DS, White Knight Chronicles: Awakening of Light and Darkness for the PS3, Harvest Moon: Twin Villages for the DS and Momotaro Railway Tag Match: Friendship – Cooperation – Winning Volume! for the PSP were the next five entries of the list.

According to a post-NPD report from Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, Nintendo’s new upsized handheld, the Dsi XL, had very good sales debut in the U.S in March.

The DSi XL didn’t arrive Stateside until March 28th, but still managed to sell 141,000 units, Pachter says.
NPD reported that the entire DS line, which now consists of the DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL, sold 700,800 units total during the month. The portable sells for $189.99 in the U.S.

The DSi XL’s main selling attraction is its larger screen, which measures 4.2 inches diagonally. The DS Lite’ screen is three inches, and the DSi’s is 3.25 inches.

The DSi XL launched in Japan as the DSi LL in November 2009, and in Europe on March 5th. The Nintendo DS line has sold over 125 million units as of December 2009. The DSi LL sold 700,000 units in Japan as of the end of last year.

Nintendo said that the larger screen of the DSi XL and the larger pen-like stylus is friendlier for older users and better for surfing the web.
