The first Dungeon Defenders game, with its mix of Diablo-like loot spawning, MOBA like combat, tower defense strategy, and role-playing elements such as leveling up and gear, was truly something special, unlike any other game on the market. Now, so long since its original release, it still remains mostly uncontested.

However, a challenger may soon be coming, in the guise of the game’s own sequel- Dungeon Defenders 2 is set to launch in Early Access for PCs on Steam on December 5, in just under a month from now. More information for the game is also set to come on that date, at The Game Awards that will be livesreamed across the world to a multitude of devices, and will be hosted by Geoff Keighley.

The game will also be coming to Mac based computers, iOS, Android, and web browsers, so there should be no shortage of ways to actually enjoy it.

One of the more promising Vita titles, Dungeon Defenders, has been canceled, reports CVG.

For those of you with extraordinarily good memories, Dungeon Defenders was announced for the Vita when the system was originally unveiled as the Next Generation Portable, back in January 2011.

No reason was given for the game’s cancellation, even as the developers tried to defend the Vita and express confidence in its viability.

“While we believe the Vita is a very capable platform, we’ve decided to shelve the Vita port of the game,” Trendy said in an official statement on its forums.

“Many fans, including myself, would like to play Dungeon Defenders on the portable device, but ultimately, we’ve decided to divert those resources to other pursuits.”

The cancellation comes in the wake of a troubling lack of games for the system, which have led to it struggling in the worldwide market.

Trendy did not talk about what new project it was working on now, though it did promise that the game would be “worth the wait.”

A mysterious visitor from the Crystalline dimension, the Summoner has decided to wage is own war across Etheria! With two pets by his sides, the Summoner can form minions out of sentient crystal and build an army to follow his every command!

Dungeon Defenders is an original hybrid of two hot genres: Tower Defense and cooperative online Action-RPG! The game puts players in the role of one of four distinctive hero classes, tasked with fending off hordes of invading beasties by strategically summoning a variety of Defenses & Traps throughout their castle.

Dungeon Defenders now has a new DLC pack. Titled Quest for the Lost Eternia Shards is coming to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

A mysterious blue bubble surrounds the city of Aquanos to give the warriors air to breathe, but in the Riddle of the Deep challenge mission, water starts to flood the protective casing, and our heroes must solve an aquamarine puzzle to keep from drowning. Trendy Entertainment has announced that the first of four parts of downloadable content for Dungeon Defenders, The Quest for the Lost Eternia Shards Part 1: Mistymire Forest, are finally available on the European PlayStation Network for free. Due to the long delay (of both the game and DLC), Trendy Entertainment and SCEE have agreed to release the first part of the expansion for free to all PSN players.

Each of the four DLC packs will take players through an entirely new campaign map, a new PvP map and a new challenge mission with new story cinematics, enemies, new weapons, a new boss, and more.

Dungeon Defenders is basically a tower defense game, but it’s best played online. I know, you’ve heard that several times before, but it’s true here- when you play alone, the game gets boring fast, the gameplay seems dull and the amped difficulty seems more of a con than a pro. When you play online though, locally or otherwise, Dungeon Defenders is a blast. Strategizing with your friends and using your own different abilities to choke your enemies and hold out against the several waves that come at you gives you a sense of satisfaction and joy that is not easily replicated.

You choose from four classic when you begin the game- Apprentice (mage), Squire (warrior), Huntress (elven ranger) or Monk (… monk). As is pretty obvious, each class has unique abilities, perks and ways of growing. While each class can perform some abilities from the other classes, they do it with their own skills and combinations, making the experience with each class radically different.

Your goal is to survive the waves of enemies and protect the  Eternia Crystal. If it falls before the level is over, you die, and you have to start all over again. While you do die a lot, and it certainly frustrates you beyond imagination, Dungeon Defenders kind of makes up for the retarded difficulty by letting you keep the stats and loot you gathered in the level that you died during. Dying still is very frustrating, but the fact that you do not lose your progress makes it a little less so.

What’s best about Dungeon Defenders, though, is the awesome level design- other than the charming visuals, of course. While the level design is basic in the earlier stages of the campaign, as you progress, the game starts throwing more choke points at you, more crystals to defend, more ways to defeat your enemies. Strategizing in these levels, using the mixed powers of all the classes and characters that are playing is a ton of fun, and it lends a great amount of replay value to the game. Add to that the fact that collecting loot is a blast, and you have a winner on your hands.

However, the game does start feeling a little repetitive as you play it more and more. You never actually get bored with the game, it just starts getting predictable, and the element of strategy gets diminished. The game still has a ton of replay value, but it just doesn’t seem as much fun in the later stages as it does when you first start playing it.

So there you have it- Dungeon Defenders is a wonderful game. It has its faults, and it definitely needs more polish, but i’ll be damned if it isn’t one of the most enjoyable and addictive games I’ve played in the last few months. Once you start playing Dungeon Defenders, trust me, it’ll be a long time before you let go.

Dungeon Defenders developers, Trendy Entertainment has open the game to the community by releasing a Development Kit. Players can create their own modes and content within the game. They have also added a new 16-player Capture the Flag Pre-Alpha version of the mode. Modding the game will give you access to the entire source code, on top of the fact that as a community, everyone can help develop the new 16 Player Capture the Flag, PvP Mode.
